Semester1Inthefirstsemester,allstudentswillstudythesamecontent.Therearethreemodules,thekeycontentofwhichisshownbelow.AcademicSkillsforMEF(Module1)Thismodulefocusesondevelopingthecorereadingandwritingskillsrequiredforsuccessinanacademiccontext.Topics,textsandtaskswillbecloselyrelatedtoaspectsofyourAcademicCoresubjects,especiallyrelatingtoBusiness.Acquiringstrengthandconfidenceintheseskillswillprepareyouforusingtheminmoreeffectiveandintegratedways,whichwillsupportyouintheincreasedchallengeofIntegratedSkillsforMEFinSemesterTwoandbeyond.CriticalThinkingandResearchSkillsforMEF(Module2)ThismoduleisdesignedtodevelopgreaterfamiliaritywithawiderangeofprimarilybusinessrelatedtopicsaswellasothersrelatingtothesubjectsstudiedintheAcademicCoremodule.ThisformsthecorecontentoftheEnglishforMEF,ListeningandSpeakingcomponentsofthemodule.Youwillberequiredtoundertakeresearchandtodevelopacriticalapproachtodealingwithconcepts,sourcesandtheworkthatyouproduce.Inaddition,youwillalsostudyAcademicVocabularyandMicro-WritinginordertohelpyoudevelopagreaterunderstandingofandabilitytousearicherandmoreaccuratelexicalandgrammaticalrangethroughoutyourspokenandwrittenworkAcademicCore(Module3)Inthismodule,youwillattendaone-hourlectureineachsubjecteveryweekthroughoutthefirstsemesterwhereyouwilllistenandtakenotesonthecontent.Lecturesareheldatthebeginningoftheweeksothatthereistimetoreflectonthecontentandundertakeadditionalresearchontheweeklytopic.Towardstheendoftheweektherewillbeaone-hourtutorialforeachsubject,forwhichyouwillbeexpectedtoprepareaspecificresearchtaskand/orquestionsonthelecturecontent.

Module3AcademicCore

Semester2Inthesecondsemester,allstudentswillstudythesamesubjectsinModules4and5,butwillbegiventheopportunitytochoosethemesortopicsrelatedtotheirownspecificacademicsubjects.TheseacademicsubjectsarecontainedwithinModule6aseithercompulsoryoroptionalsubjects.StudentswillagreetheirownoptionsinconsultationwiththeProgrammeDirector.IntegratedAcademicSkillsforMEF(Module4)ThismoduleaimstofurtherdeveloptheskillsstudiedintheSemesterOneAcademicSkillsforMEFmodulethoughwithanincreasingemphasisonusingtheseskillsinamorefullyintegratedway.ResearchingandPresentingforMEF(Module5)Thismodulebuildsonthekeyacademicsubjectknowledge,skillsandstrategiescoveredinAcademicSkillsI,butwithincreasedfocusonlearnerindependence.SpeakingwillbereplacedbythemoredemandingchallengesofOralPresentationsandSeminarSkills,andProjectSkillsbecomesthemorein-depthstudyofResearchSkillsculminatingintheproductionofanassessedresearchreport.Therewillbeastrongeremphasisonengagementwithsourcesandworkingwithmaterialsfromdifferentgenres.Ahigherlevelofcriticalanalysisinstudents’workwillbeexpected,aswillattentiontodetailregardingthereferencingofsources.Classeswillbebothteacher-ledandstudent-ledandworkshopswillbeheldwhencourseworksubmissiondeadlinesareapproaching.AcademicElectives(Module6)Inthesecondsemester,studentswillstudyacombinationofthreecompulsoryandoptionalsubjects.Therewillbeatutor-ledlectureandrelatedtutorials/seminarsforeachsubjecteachweek.StudentswillbeexpectedtoprepareforclassesinsimilarwaystotheAcademicCoreModuleI.

Assessment

Therearetwosemestersintheprogramme.Youwillhaveregularcourseworkassignmentsthroughouteachterm,andsomeofthesewillcontributetowardsyourfinalgrade.Inaddition,youwillhavetwosetsofexaminations,onesetattheendofeachsemester.

Weuseavarietyoftypesofassessment,togiveyouexperienceofdifferentwaysofbeingexamined-essays,multiplechoicetests,shortparagraphs,interviews,presentationsandsoon.
