Integrated Watershed Management
2015/16
Modelling
• A model is a conceptualized and simplified version
of reality / Um modelo é uma versão conceptualizada e
simplificada da realidade;
• Establishes the relationship between the pressures
and the state of a water body, and gives insights
on how the system work / Permite relacionar pressões
sistema;
• Enables the testing of possible solutions / Permite
“experimentar” soluções.
• Modeling / Modelação:
– Physical models / Modelos físicos;
– Mathematical models / Modelos matemáticos.

Models and the decision making proccess
Models are needed to support our decisions / Os modelos são úteis para
apoiar o processo de decisão:
How do we decide? / Como decidimos?
• We define the problem / Definimos o problema;
• We identify possible alternative solutions / Identificação de soluções
viáveis (admissíveis), i.e. que satisfazem as condicionantes do problema;
• We evaluate different alternatives / Avaliamos as alternativas:
– Alternative 1 –> benefits, Costs, State;
– Alternative 2 –> benefits, Costs, State;
– …..
– Alternative n –> benefits, Costs, State;
• We identify the most adequate alternative /Identificação da a
alternativa mais adequada.

Simulation
• The model evaluates the performance of the system if a
given alternative is adopted / Modelo matemático que estima o
desempenho do sistema se adoptada determinada solução;
• The user tests different alternatives and evaluates the
results / O utilizador testa várias alternativas e avalia os resultados.
• The best alternative is identified by trial and error / Por
tentativa e erro, é identificada a melhor alternativa.

Comparative

• Disadvantage: This may be time consuming. Desvantagem: Pode existir
Optimization
• The model identifies a possible solution / O modelo identifica uma
possível solução:
• Evaluates the system performance / Estima o desempenho do
sistema;
• The model improves the solution / Aperfeiçoa a solução;
• The model automatically identifies the best solution / Identifica a melhor alternativa de forma automática;

Simulation Alternative x Consequences

• Disadvantage: There is usually a need to simplify the problem
to be able to solve it / Desvantagem: É frequentemente preciso simplificar
o problema para poder resolvê-lo por optimização.

Simulation versus optimization
• Simulation
– Simulates the real world in a more
realistic way / Permite simular o sistema de
forma mais realista;
– Possible alternatives must be identified
manually / Exige a identificação manual das
alternativas viáveis;
– The best alternative must be identified by
trial and error / Exige identificação da melhor
alternativa por tentativa e erro;
– When the number of alternatives is large,
it is hard to find the best one / Quando
identificar a melhor.
• Optimization
– The simulation of each alternative
must be simplified / Simulação
simplificada do sistema;
– The identification of the best
alternative is done automatically / Identificação da melhor solução de forma
automática.
– The alternative identified as the
best one, may not be the best one
in the real world / A solução identificada
real.
Solution
• Use optimization to find a set of promising solutions;
• Use simulation to evaluate the promising solutions and perform some fine tuning; 8

Exercise: Contamination control
To meet the established requirements, the project promoters are studying the possibility to request additional downloads reservoir located upstream to complement the treatment scheme that is to be installed. Treatment costs are 30 euros for each mg/s removed, but treatment rates above 60% are not possible. The reservoir has energy production contracts that require it to unload permanently 1 m3/s. The cost of additional downloads are 30 thousand euro/(m3/s). The reservoir managers are not interested in downloading more than 3 m3/s above the power generation discharges.
What is the most economical solution to meet the established requirements ?

Consider the watercourse where you want to install a plant that produces 4 g/s of a pollutant effluent. Environmental authorities only authorize this installation if the concentration of values resulting from the discharge do not exceed the 0.8 mg/l in section 1 and 0.5 mg/l in Section 2. Assume a coefficient of degradation 0.25 1/day and a flow of 0.15 m/s.
