estate that had been unoccupied for nearly sixty years, he stumbled into one of the most surprising American stories of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Empty Mansions is a rich tale of wealth and loss, complete with copper barons, Gilded Age opulence, and
2
backdoor politics. At its heart is a reclusive 104-year-old heiress named Huguette Clark. Dedman has collaborated with Huguette's cousin, Paul Clark Newell, Jr., one of the few relatives to have had frequent conversations with her, to tell a fairy tale in reverse: the bright, talented daughter who is born into an almost royal family of amazing wealth and privilege, yet who secrets herself away from the outside world. Empty Mansions reveals a complete picture of the enigmatic Huguette Clark, heiress to one of the greatest fortunes in American history, a woman who had not been photographed in public since the 1920s.

Notes – Challenges encountered
a) The number of pages listed in the book’s record on Amazon, 512 pages, did not match the number of
pages, 470 pages, listed in the book’s record on OCLC Connexion and LC Online Catalog:
http://lccn.loc.gov/2013387678, even though all other attributes, such as ISBN and OCLC number,
matched. I opted to keep the number of pages according to OCLC Connexion and LC Online Catalog.
b) I added the ‡v Fiction to the first 5 subject headings (650 tags), according to the Unit 3 “Steps in
Cataloging Monographs” PowerPoint, and marked my additions in green. I noticed that these headings
already had a different form assigned by the OCLC, ‡v Biography. Upon confirming that the ‡v subfield
3
is a repeatable field (OCLC, 650 Topical Term; Library of Congress, 2009), I added the ‡v Fiction form
to the subject headings.
c) I decided not to include the ‡2 gsafd1 to the genre subject heading (655 tag), for the following reasons:
The 655 field already had another ‡2 source of term included in the record: “‡2 fast” (Faceted
Application of Subject Terminology (OCLC, Enriching WorldCat with FAST)
The ‡2 subfield in the 655 field is nonrepeatable, according to OCLC (OCLC, 655 Index Term—
Genre/Form) and Library of Congress (2009).
d) I kept the field 264 – Production, Publication, Distribution, Manufacture, and Copyright Notice in
place of field 260 (as the the Unit 3 “Steps in Cataloging Monographs” PowerPoint suggested), based on
the guidelines issued by the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC): “Use the 264 for all new original
or newly authenticated RDA records” (The Program for Cooperative Cataloging, 2012).

1 As I was exploring guidelines on how to use the genre subfields in 655, I was unable to find information on ‡2 gsfad, and found the ‡2gsafd information instead, e.g. here: http://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/6xx/655.html.

MARC Record Analysis
These ten OCLC MARC records represent bibliographic records of the scholarly serial Saturday Review,
formerly known as Saturday Review of Literature. Of these, three contain the [MICROOPAQUE] format
21
identifier, in addition to the SERIAL designation; three contain the [MICROFILM] format identifier; and
one is marked [MICROFICHE].
Upon careful examination of all ten OCLC records, I have concluded that the most comprehensive record
that describes the history of the Saturday Review title and provides comprehensive coverage in the formats
that are available, is the DLC OCLC record # 158849010.
First, it has the identifying characteristic of serials, the ISSN number in the 022 International Standard
Serial Number field:
022 0_ 0036-4983 ‡l 0036-4983 ‡2 1
The most obvious conclusion that can be made while reviewing all ten records in general and the 1588490
record in particular, is that the name of the serial changed over time. “When a serial experiences “major title
changes” (Rule 21.2A), a new record is warranted. Rule 21.2C instructs catalogers to create a new record
for issues under the new title and link the earlier record with the new one through a linking field such as 780
(for a preceding title) and 785 (for a succeeding title),” Hsieh-Yee points out (2006, p. 271).
According to Jones, the Saturday Review of Literature title was shortened to Saturday Review in 1952
(2013, p. 5). The OCLC 1588490 record’s 780 preceding entry field provides information about the
preceding title, Saturday Review of Literature, as well as the preceding title’s International Standard Serial
Number and the Library of Congress and OCLC record control numbers:
780 00 ‡t Saturday review of literature ‡x 0147-5932 ‡w (DLC)sf 84007172 ‡w (OCoLC)1777743
Further, based on the OCLC record # 1588490 field 580 (Linking entry complexity note), the serial split
into four parts with January 1973: Saturday review of the arts, ISSN 0091-8563; Saturday review of
education, ISSN 0091-8555; Saturday review of the sciences, ISSN 0091-8547; Saturday review of the
society, ISSN 0091-8571.
580 Split into four parts with Jan. 1973: Saturday review of the arts, ISSN 0091-8563; Saturday
review of education, ISSN 0091-8555; Saturday review of the sciences, ISSN 0091-8547;
Saturday review of the society, ISSN 0091-8571.
According to the above, the OCLC record # 1588490 includes all respective 785 succeeding entry fields
reflecting the change of the title:
785 16 ‡t Saturday review of the arts ‡x 0091-8563 ‡w (DLC) 73640129 ‡w (OCoLC)1775216
785 16 ‡t Saturday review of education ‡x 0091-8555 ‡w (DLC) 73640128 ‡w (OCoLC)1586137
785 16 ‡t Saturday review of the sciences ‡x 0091-8547 ‡w (DLC) 73640127 ‡w (OCoLC)1775217
785 16 ‡t Saturday review of the society ‡x 0091-8571 ‡w (DLC) 73640126 ‡w (OCoLC)1640612
Unlike the rest of the records, the OCLC record # 1588490 includes “Saturday Review” in the 222 Key
Title field. The other records either include ““Saturday Review of Literature” in that field (#6079704,
10 Complete MARC OCLC record # 1588490 is available in the Appendix section of this paper.
22
#13988923), or miss that field altogether. I SSN national centers use field 222 for a unique title assigned
to a continuing resource (serial or integrating resource) in conjunction with an International Standard
Serial Number in field 022. The title is formed from title information transcribed from a piece of the
continuing resource and is constructed with qualifiers to make it unique when necessary.11
The OCLC record # 1588490 is also helpful because it includes the most accurate information in the 362
field (Dates of Publication and/or Sequential Designation), covering all available time periods in the
journal’s life span:
362 0_ v. 35, no. 1-v. 55, no. 52; Jan. 5, 1952-Jan. 1973.
Finally, the online version of the serial is referenced in two 776 fields (Additional Physical Form Entry):
776 08 ‡i Online version: ‡t Saturday review ‡w (OCoLC)563914761
776 08 ‡i Online version: ‡t Saturday review ‡w (OCoLC)605549469
The only thing that I would change in the OCLC record # 1588490 is I would augment the subject
classification of the serial:
650 _0 Literature ‡x Periodicals.
In particular, I would tweak the LC subject headings in the first 650 field and adding two additional 650
fields, similar to how it was done in OCLC records #6824930 and #6079704:
650 _0 American literature ‡v Bibliography ‡v Periodicals.
650 _0 English literature ‡v Bibliography ‡v Periodicals.
650 _0 Books ‡v Reviews.
