Mentioning the JCC immediately elicits questions: What’s that? I hear the

JCC has a great pool? Don’t you have to be Jewish? Is it a country club?

There are plenty more questions — hopefully the following pages will answer most of yours — but here are some quick responses:

What’s that? JCC stands for Jewish Community Center. We are the I.J. & Jeanné Wagner Jewish Community Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

I hear the JCC has a great pool? Yes we do. Two of them.

Don’t you have to be Jewish? No. In fact, most of our members are not Jewish. We are committed to being a welcoming and diverse community center.

Is that a country club? No. We are a membership-based community, but by no means a country club.

What goes on there? Plenty. We are home to an NAEYC-accredited preschool and kindergarten. We offer afterschool programs and summer camps. We have a full fitness facility and host a number of concerts, lectures, classes and festivals. There truly is something for everyone.

surprised to find such an extensive and stunning health & fitness facility. Our regulars know it’s a hidden gem filled with top-notch professional instructors, challenging classes, gleaming facilities and options for just about every interest and ability.

We eschew the typical gym atmosphere where facilities are cavernous and instructors have little patience for the novice. Everyone is welcome at the JCC — from the elite athlete to someone simply looking for a way to shed a few pounds.

No matter your fitness level or background, you are sure to find what’s been missing from your workouts at the JCC.

Even if you’re not all that familiar with the JCC, you have probably heard something about our

pool. We have one of the best in town. It’s tough to beat sitting poolside while kids squeal with laughter on a warm summer evening.

If lounging on the pool deck isn’t your idea of fun, we have plenty of outdoor lap hours during the summer, along with year-round indoor swimming. We also offer Masters Swim workouts, swim lessons, a youth swim team and plenty of pool-based fitness workouts.

We are loaded with other recreation options — especially for kids. Our popular Swim, Dance & Sports program features everything from swim lessons to ballet, rock climbing to basketball.

There is no shortage of options when it comes to preschool and kindergarten. What separates us? We offer a place

where your child will expand horizons, develop skills and grow in a safe, fun and nurturing environment.

We offer a 9-month program with summer camp options. The JCC’s Early Childhood Center is one of a select group of preschools with accreditation through NAEYC, the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

youth & teenThink back to your youth. There is probably a place or time that immediately evokes great memories and likely still puts a smile on your face. A place where you made friends and — probably without realizing it — learned some of life’s most valuable lessons.

For children and young adults in our youth programs, the JCC is that place. Take the example of Jerrad Strand, a kid who was practically raised at the JCC. The positive memories were so strong for Jerrad, he returned as an adult to run our AfterSchool and Summer Camp programs.

For more than 30 years, the JCC has been home to “Bernie Camp” — a 9-week summer camp named in memory of Bernie Solomon, beloved former Executive Director of the JCC who died much too young. Our AfterSchool program provides an enriching and safe environment. Plus, we offer convenient bus pickup service at a number of Salt Lake area schools.

The JCC is a vibrant community center full of people of all ages, faiths and family configurations coming together in peace and understanding to strengthen their minds, bodies and spirits.

In 2011, we celebrated our 10th anniversary at this location. Our

generous benefactor, Izzi Wagner, loved to joke that the Fort Douglas Country Club “wouldn’t let me join, so I bought the place.” His gift helped create a community center where everyone is welcome.

We are nestled in the foothills of Salt Lake City just across the street from the University of Utah Hospital and Primary Children’s Medical Center.

Whether you are interested in one of the finest preschools in the area or an exceptional AfterSchool program, looking for a fitness center or just need a welcoming, inclusive community, you’ll find it at the JCC.
