Season’s greetings to all of you. IAP-ID makes constant efforts to keep all the
members abreast of the newer diagnostic modalities and ancillary aids in the
various subspecialties of pathology. In this endeavour, the Mid year Teaching
Programme is being organized at L.V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad on
Opthalmic Pathology in August 2011 with an increasing number of ophthalmic institutes
in the country, Ophthalmic Pathology has emerged as an upcoming subspeciality. The
annual CME is being organized at PGI, Chandigarh on Liver Pathology in October 2011.
National and International Faculty are participating in both the events and sharing their
expertise. I wish both the events a grand success.
We look forward to the Annual Conference of IAP-ID to be held in Patiala along with the
National IAPM Conference in December 2011. I request all the members to attend the
forthcoming meetings and participate in the scientific deliberations.

This year for the IAP-ID Annual Meeting 2011 at Patiala in December our invited
Guest Speaker will be Prof. Dr. Kumarasen Cooper, Director of Anatomic Pathology,
Vice-Chair and Professor of PathologyUniversity of Vermont/Fletcher Allen Health
Care, Vermont, USA. The IAP-ID is deeply honoured and happy to have Prof.
Kumarasen Cooper, who is a Past President of the South African Division of the
IAP, attend the Meeting. A brief biodata of Prof. Kumarasen Cooper is given here
under for the benefit of the members:
Prof. Dr. Kumarasen Cooper
Born in Durban, South Africa, Prof. Kumarasen Cooper is
currently the Director of Anatomic Pathology, Vice-Chair and
Professor of Pathology University of Vermont/Fletcher Allen
Health Care, Burlington, Vermont, USA, a position he is occupying
since May 1999.
Dr. Kum Cooper had his University Education in South Africa
and the United Kingdom having obtained BSc (University of
Durban-Westville) 1972-1974, BSc (Hons) (University of Durban-
Westville) 1975, MBChB (University of Natal) 1976-1980 and
DPhil (University of Oxford) 1990-1992. His Professional
Qualifications include FFPath (College of Medicine of South
Africa) 1985, MRCPath (Royal College of Pathologists, London,
UK)1987 and FRCPath (Royal College of Pathologists, London,
UK) 1997. Prof. Kum Cooper’s Fellowships and Awards include
the Oxford Nuffield Medical Fellowship (1989), Phyllis Knocker /
Bradlow Award (1990) and the Francois Daubenton Award in
1994 for teaching medical students in the University of
Witwatersrand.
Dr. Kum Cooper’s professional appointments from 1982
onwards include Resident in Pathology, Attending Pathologist/
Lecturer, Senior Pathologist/Senior Lecturer : Anatomical
Pathology, University of Natal and King Edward VIII Hospital;
Oxford Nuffield Medical Fellow: Nuffield Department of Pathology,
Oxford, UK (1990-1992); Professor of Anatomical Pathology (Dec
1992-March 1999) and then Chairman of Department of
Anatomical Pathology (July 1993-March 1999), School of
Pathology, University of Witwatersrand and South African Institute
for Medical Research. Subsequently, Prof. Kum Cooper moved
to the United States of America in May 1999 and since then has
been the Director of Anatomic Pathology, Vice-Chair and
Professor of Pathology, University of Vermont/Fletcher Allen
Health Care, Burlington, Vermont, USA.
Prof. Cooper has extensive professional experience in Post
Mortem and Surgical Pathology including use of Electron
Microscopy, Immunofluorescence, Frozen Sections and
Immunohistochemistry. He has been the Director of the
Immunohistochemistry Laboratory. As Director of Anatomic
Pathology, I supervised and managed five Directors under his
leadership in Surgical Pathology, Quality Assurance,
Cytopathology, Autopsy and Histology
Prof. Cooper has vast teaching experience with both Under
Graduate, Graduate and Post Graduate medical students and
has taken Lab demonstrations, tutorials, autopsy teaching, and
lectures in Anatomic Pathology. He is also involved in
Postgraduate Resident supervision towards specialization in all
areas of Anatomical Pathology and conducts a weekly Surgical
Pathology teaching conference (Cooper Conference) for
residents. Dr. Cooper also conducts the Histopathology Club for
both academic and private Pathologists. Dr. Cooper also produces
the popular Surgical Pathology Monthly Literature Updates
circulated world wide. These updates by Prof. Cooper also
regularly feature in the Journal of Clinical Pathology as “Snippets
in Surgical Pathology”. Prof. Kum Cooper has been an Examiner
for both Under Graduate and Post Graduate Exams and for board
pathology examinations at many Universities. These include
examiner for Under Graduate students at University of Natal,
University of Cape Town, Medical University of South Africa and
University of Nairobi, Kenya. He has been a Postgraduate
examiner and Convener for the College of Medicine of South Africa
in the Faculty of Pathology which are the board pathology
examinations for registration as Anatomical Pathologists in South
Africa; examiner for MMed (Path) examination at Medunsa and
University of Cape Town; Convener for College of Medicine of
South Africa in the Faculty of Pathology; and, examiner to
University of Nairobi, Kenya. He has supervised 8 Post Graduate
Research students and has large number of research grants to
his credit and has also been a grant application assessor.
Dr. Cooper has also been on various review panels and has
reviewed the Thesis of several PhD, MMed (Path) students for
many Universities. A prolific writer and researcher Dr. Kumarasen
Cooper has more than 236 publications and 87 abstracts in various
international journals. He has also written chapters in 13 books.
A popular and much sought after speaker Dr. Cooper has delivered
more than 107 lectures, presentations and papers at various
international fora. He is a referee for a large number of Journals
and is on the Editorial Board of several Journals including
American Journal of Surgical Pathology; Current Diagnostic
Pathology; Advances in Anat Path; Pathology; CAP Performance
Improvement Program (PIP); International Journal of
Gynecological Pathology; Journal of Clinical Pathology and
Molecular Pathology; and, Archives of Pathology & Laboratory
Medicine.
Prof. Kum Cooper is a member of a large number of
Professional bodies and has been the President of the South
African Division of the IAP from 1996 – 1998, having earlier served
as its Secretary (1987 – 1989). Besides being a member of
International Academy of Pathologists (SA Division), Dr. Kum
Cooper has also been a member of Federation of South African
Society of Pathologists; Fellow of SA College of Medicine; Member
and Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists; Member of the
Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland; Member of
International Society for Gynaecological Pathologists; Member
of the Arkadi M Rywlin Pathology Slide Seminar Club; Council
Member of FSASP; member of International Academy of
Pathologists (United States-Canadian Division; Member of New
England Society of Pathologists; Member of Vermont Society of
Pathologists; Member of ADASP; Member of Haematopathology
Club, UK; Member of Vermont Cancer Center; Affiliate Member
of American College of Pathologists (CAP); Member of Surgical
Pathology Committee (CAP); Liaison member between ADASP
and CAP Surgical Pathology Committee; Member of ADASP
Council; Vice-Chair, Immunohistochemistry Committee (CAP);
Member of Gynecological Tumors Cancer Protocol Panel (CAP);
and, Member of Cancer Committee and Chair of Soft Tissue and
Bone Tumors (CAP)
Prof. Kum Cooper also has had several important Faculty
Appointments to name a few: Member, curriculum committee,
University of Natal; Member of Senate and Faculty of Medicine,
University of Witwatersrand; Member Postgraduate and
Undergraduate Committees; Member of curriculum review
committee; Nominated member of University Council Committee
on Exclusions; Member of Advisory Committee to National Cancer

of Reappointments Committee; and, Member of QA Committee
Dr. Cooper’s is an avid sportsman and his other interests
include Swimming, jogging, cycling (Argus Cycle Tour (105 km),
Cape Town), Bird watching and Game drives (South Africa) and
Snowboarding.

The IAP-ID has the following programmes during the course of
the year:
� Mid Year Teaching Programme (usually a Workshop)
� IAP-ID Annual CME
� Annual Meeting (usually held in conjunction with IAPM
Meeting) having a Symposium and Slide Seminar.
Those members desirous of organizing and hosting the Mid Year
Teaching Programme 2012 or the 15th IAP-ID Annual CME 2012
should send their concrete proposals with the theme of the meeting to
the Secretary & Treasurer, Dr. Krishna Balachandran Nair.
For the Annual Conference 2012 (held along with the IAPM
Conference), those desirous of being Moderators for the Symposium
or Slide Seminar should send in their names along with the proposed
title of the Symposium and Slide Seminar to the Secretary & Treasurer,
IAP-ID. Also as per the decision of the General Body of the IAP-ID
certain topics have been suggested as possible subjects for the Slide
Seminar and Symposium. Members desirous of being Moderators for
any of these topics should send their names to the Secretary &
Treasurer, IAP-ID. However, as per the decision of the Council and
General Body of the IAP-ID, the person selected as the moderator
shall be the one who is felt to be best suited to be for the particular
topic of the Symposium or Slide Seminar.
All proposals should reach the Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID, by
15th October 2011, so as the same proposals could be discussed
and approved by the Council and General Body of the IAP-ID.

I am very happy to present this issue of IAP-ID News letter Vol
14, No 2, July 2011 incorporating all the events in the Indian Division
of IAP as well as providing information on the forthcoming activities.

about the activities of the organization I sincerely request all the

7th Asia Pacific IAP Congress Taipei, Taiwan
The 7th Asia Pacific Congress of the International Academy of Pathology was held at the Taipei International Convention Center, Taipei, Taiwanfrom 20th to 24th May 2011. From India there were four attendees namely Dr. Francisco Couto, Dr. Pradeep Vaideeshwar, Dr. Anita Bhaduri andDr. Shanaz Khodaiji. Dr. Pradeep Vaideeshwar was Faculty for the Pulmonary and Infectious Diseases scientific sessions. Dr. Francisco Coutoco-chaired a scientific session on Haematopathology along with Prof. Bharat Nathwani (USA). Dr. Francisco Couto, Immediate Past President IAP-ID and member of Education Committee of IAP, attended the Executive meeting of the IAP Asia Pacific Divisions assembly and represented the IAP– Indian Division at this meeting.
IAP-ID Associate MembersMembership of the IAP-ID as Associate Members has been
started over many years for Post Graduate students in Pathology andothers. These Associate Members would have no voting rights or otherstatutory rights of full members and would have to become full membersof the IAP-ID on attaining their post graduate qualification. My warm greetings and best wishes to you all. Iextend a warm welcome to all the new members ofIAP-ID. I look forward to their active participationand contribution to the activities of the division.
The IAP-ID focuses to have interesting andexcellent academic activities and this attracts increasing numberof new members. The members are the strength of the divisionand keeps the division growing.
The mid year teaching programme of 2011 is being held at LV PrasadEye Institute at Hyderabad on August first and is organized byDr. Geeta Vemuganti. The topic is ‘An Overview of OphthalmicPathology An Emerging Subspeciality’. I sincerely thank Dr Geethaand other members of the organizing committee for their sincereefforts. I am sure the programme will be an excellent one, coveringvarious aspects of Ophthamic Pathology and I wish all successfor the programmme.
Later this year we are having the Annual CME (IAP-ID 14thAnnual CME ) , will be held on 1st and 2nd of October at PGIChandigarh on “Non Neoplastic Liver Diseases”. The organizingsecretary is Prof Ashim Das. The faculty include international andnational experts in the field of liver pathology. The programmeconsists of lectures, slide seminars and case discussions. I am sure
that all the participants will be immensely benefitted by the CME .Iwish CME all success.
I earnestly request all the members to attend the academicprogrammes of IAP-ID and make them a great success.
Our annual conference will be held at Patiala along with APCON2011. I look forward to meet you all at Patiala. I sincerely thank Dr.John Marshall Johnson for all his efforts to maintain the web site ofIAP-ID.

Prof. D. Bhaskara Reddy, the Doyen of Pathology in India, passed away on 15th March 2011
at Hyderabad leaving a huge void in the world of Pathology and Medicine and a sad loss to all of
us. Dr. Bhaskara Reddy was one of the founder members of the International Academy of Pathology
– Indian Division (IAP-ID) and also served as its President.
Prof. Bhaskara Reddy, MD, DSC (Hons), FRCPath (London), FACP, FAMS, FICP, was born
in 1924 inVeeranathur village in Madras state and had his early education in Chittoor and Madras
and then graduated from Madras University with his MBBS degree. Subsequently he obtained
his MD in Pathology and Microbiology from the University of Madras in 1953. Dr. Bhaskara Reddy
joined Government service and served as Professor of Pathology at Visakahpatnam and Guntur
and later was the Principal (Dean) of Kurnool and Guntur Medical Colleges. He retired as Director
of Medical and Health Services of Andhra Pradesh in 1982. Following this he was appointed as
Vice Chancellor of Nagarjuna University, Guntur, and later as Director, Nizam’s Institute of Medical
Sciences, Hyderabad.
Dr. Bhaskara Reddy had his advanced training at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology
(AFIP), Washington DC, USA in 1959 – 1960 and also visited several Institutions in the USA and United Kingdom under the TCM
and British Council Fellowships in 1975. A dedicated and talented researcher and academician of world renown Dr. Bhaskara
Reddy had more than 300 scientific publications to his credit. Dr. Reddy received an honorary Doctorate from Nagarjuna University
in 1985. Dr. Reddy was Fellow of the Indian Academy of Medical Sciences, American College of Pathologists, and Royal College
of Pathologists. He was a member of several National and International Organizations. Dr. Bhaskara Reddy was the
President of the International Academy of Pathology – Indian Division (IAP-ID), Indian Association of Pathologists and
Microbiologists (1978) and Indian Academy of Cytologists (1979).
A revered and much loved teacher his students are spread all over the world and several have held high positions both in
India and abroad in countries like USA and UK. Dr. Bhaskara Reddy was highly respected and much loved by students, colleagues,
friends, society and public at large. His contributions to Pathology, academics and public health are tremendous and will never
be forgotten.
Dr. Bhaskara Reddy was a giant of a man, a father figure, whose advice, guidance and endearing personality will be sorely
missed. His jovial personality, ready smile and warm heart touched the lives of so many.
Dr. Bhaskara Reddy is survived by his four children, all of whom are eminent personalities in their own right, and his
grandchildren. On behalf of the International Academy of Pathology – Indian Division (IAP-ID) I convey our deepest sympathies
and condolences to the family of our much loved late Prof. Dr. D. Bhaskara Reddy.

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing away of Prof. Dr. S. G. Deodhare,
MD, FAMS, former Professor and Head of Pathology, and Dean, Grant Medical College
and Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals, Mumbai. Dr. Deodhare occupied several other prominent
positions during his long career and contributed a lot to Pathology. Dr. Deodhare authored
the popular NEWSPath published regularly on Pathoindia.com. He was one of the senior
most members of the IAP-ID and an active member with great interest in academics and
scientific matters. The International Academy of Pathology – Indian Division deeply
mourns his loss and conveys condolences to his bereaved family.
