HANSON Friday, August 8 • Enmore Theatre
THE WAR OF THE ROSES Friday, 9.30 • ONE
This hilarious farce directed by Danny DeVito could well be his finest moment both in front of and behind the camera. The Roses, Barbara and Oliver (Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner), live happily as a married couple. Then she starts to wonder what life would be like without Oliver. Both want to stay in the house, and so they begin a campaign to force each other to leave. Things quickly escalate to hilarious proportions.
Pop-rock behemoth Hanson, are back with their brand new album Anthem along with the album's lead single Get The Girl Back.
This tour will mark a welcome return for the band to Australia following their 2012 Shout It Out tour, on which all shows across every major capital city sold out.
The infectious new single Get The Girl Back, showcases the band's signature soulful pop-rock sound, and features guest appearances from members of fellow pop-soul connoisseurs Fitz and The Tantrums.
Anthem's guitar-driven sound pulls from some of the band's harder hitting rock and R&B influences - from James Brown, to early Michael Jackson, and AC/DC .
THELEGO MOVIE Out Now RATEDPG
The story follows everyman or every mini-figure Emmett who is living life strictly according to the "instructions". Everything is going swimmingly for Bricktown's most obedient construction worker until he is identified, via a prophecy form the ancient sage Vetruvius (Morgan Freeman), as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the whole Lego universe from the evil tyrant President Business (Will Ferrell). President Business, or Lord Business as he is also known, is hell bent on making the denizens of the Lego universe stick rigidly to the instructions, and in a ploy to stifle any creativity and imagination, plans to glue the world together with his secret weapon The Kraggle.
THEWHO QUADROPHENIA LIVE IN LONDON Out Now
While the manic, yet assured drumming of Keith Moon and the swooping menacing bass of John Entwhistle that made the original recording so darn powerful, is sorely missing from this live set, it's still a blistering listen and testament to the band who can still ''bring it" some 40 years after the album's release.
This double disc features, of course Quadrophenia performed back to back and tracks like Love Reign o'er Me, The Real Me and The Punk and the Godfather have rarely sounded better.
Townsend and co were never a band to do things by halves so, the second disc in this collection features a slew of clas-sics including Pinball Wizard, Won't Get Fooled Again and Baba O'Reily proving that this band is so much more than mere cop show theme tune fodder.

STEPHEN BISSET
hen it comes to redletter years, this one is definitely up there for Newcastle singer-&mgwriter MOIglIIl Evans_
Aside from releasing his debut album -an album that has been in the ARIA country charts for 14 weeks - Evans also took home three CMC Music awards, played a festival-stealing show at CMC Rocks the Hunter, toured with US country star Gretchen Wilson not to mention playing on some of the most sought-after country music stages on the planet - The Grand 01 Oprey ( a stage that has hosted everyone from Hank Williams to Elvis) and at the world's biggest country music festival, the CMA Music Fest in Nashville. Not bad considering it's only JUly.
"There have been so many highlights this year - it's quite surreal," Evans told TE.
"Obviously the album coming out was a huge highlight and that CMC show was definitely huge and getting to play The Grand Ole Opry and the Riverfront Stage at CMA was just phenomenal.
"The Grand Ole Opry was just one of those things that worked out - it was definitely the best gig I've ever played in my life and definitely one to tell the grandkids although there is a video of it on You Tube so I get to relive it every day. Standing in that circle on the stage, playing where everyone from Hank Williams and Elvis Presley to Keith Urhan has played, gives me chills just thinking about it."
Evans added that, aside from the 'wow" factor of touring with the likes of Gretchen Wilson, Alan Jackson and Taylor Swift, playing with these industry ''heavy hitters" helped make him a better performer.
"Every time I go out on the road with people like Gretchen it's great because you just take so much away from watching them every night - it definitely helps you to appreciate your own shows a lot more:' he said.
Recorded and partly written in the songwriting Mecca of Nashville - a place that he said was almost impossible not to feel inspired, Evans' debut album features the production talents of ex-pat Aussie Jedd Hughes (Keith Urban, Emmylou Harris) and a litany of A-list players including slide player Dan Dugrnore who has worked with the likes of James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt. If there's one thing that can be said of the album it is that it traverses quite a hit of musical and lyrical territory - from the barnstorming rocker Best I Never Had to the more soulful Lave You Home and Make You Feel Like a Woman. There's even a brilliant cover of the Guy Clark classic The Cape featuring the voice of none other than Kasey Chambers.
Evans said that lyrically, the album is essentially a chronicling of his life from burgeoning Newcastle muso to rising country star.
"I've been working toward this album
It was definitely the best gig I have ever played in my entire life
since I started my first band at the age of thirteen," he said.
"Lyrically, I guess it's just life in general and all of the complexities that go with it that form the main inspiration on the album. I mean they say you've got your whole life to write your first album."
He added that despite the album being out and about for a while now, he was constantly surprised with the reception it continues to get.
"It really does shock me seeing the album in the charts for 14 weeks - it definitely maked the hard work worthwhile."
Aside from making serious inroads both here and in the US with his unaffected brand of country rock, Evans also recently stitched himself into the fabric of Novocastrian culture after penning the Newcastle Knights theme song Long Live The Newcastle Knights.
"I've been a Knights fan since, forever
so getting the opportunity to write the song is just amazing," he said.
"The Knights have had a pretty tough year what with Alex McKinnon's injury and the whole business side of things, and there haven't really been too many opportunities to sing the song this season but hopefully that will all change. I honestly couldn't be prouder."
Evans will be making a triumphant return to Newcastle later this month. He will be bringining Tamworth-bred artist Ashleigh Dallas whose formidable live chops were showcased at the Kasey and Nash Chambers-led Foggy Mountain Jam show.
"I always look forward to playing Newcastle, obviOusly, but this show is going to be huge. I can't wait."

Load'elR Up If you're a music fan, chances are
the boys from Rubber Bullet have got your favourite sounds covered.
With an unrivalled quantity of songs in the arsenal, they have been gigging solidly in the Newcastle area for the past four years.
They say they have never played the same show twice, keeping every performance unique, fresh and driving with a spontaneous energy.
Like many popular powerhouse bands of the past, Rubber Bullet pride themselves on only being a three-piece and keeping it all totally live.
Bass player and vocalist Mark Wood was born in Liverpool, England and returned there in the early '90S, where he spent some time in a Beatles concept band in the role of John Lennon.
Zane Penn on vocals and lead guitar has a wealth of experience also. He has been resident musician at the P and 0 resort on Heron Island and a lead member of the house band at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast as well as opening for a string of top acts, most notably being Mick Jagger on his 1990 solo tour.

As happy as rock pigs in lIIud
H aving just caught our collective breath from the unabashed frivolity that was the Gumball
Festival's tenth anniversary in April, news that its "slightly rebellious" sister event Pigsty in July is welcome, to say the least, for gig pigs everywhere.
The one day affair is raising the energy levels with this year's event, with a great lineup thatindudes the King of the North (pictured), Mojo Juju, Steve Smyth Wolf and Cub, Sydney soul funksters Gang of brothers, psych rockers The walking Who, bodacious party duo The Stiffys, seven-piece soul outfit Beaten Bodies and, of course, Dashville favourites the Dashville Progress Society.
Pigsty in July is touted as a day of luxurious indulgence, focusing on warm winter foods and an array of specially selected boutique beers, local wine and naughty cocktails. Surrounded by the warmth of food, friends, open fires and a bunch of great bands, the idyllic exdusive atmosphere of PigSty is the perfect escape from the winter flats.
The boutique event which features a '2nd hand formal' dress code, was held last year at Dashville as part of the biennial Singleton Arts Festival and by popu-1ar demand is back bigger and better for its second year at the site.
Capacity of this event is limited to 500,

I f there's anyone who could say they have well and truly paid their toll on the rock and roll freeway, it would
be Steve Balbi. As bass player seminal Aussie rockers Noiseworks as well as outfits like The Electric Hippies and Move Trees and, more recently as frontman for the rejuvenated Mi-Sex, there isn't much of the business that Balbi hasn't seen.
Now, he is hitting the road for an intimate solo show that is a little different from the normal run-of-the-mill rock sow.
"I've found that I've had to shut myself up before because I do like a chat, so this show will also feature a little bit of story-telling between the songs and I'll also be playing some new arrangements of the songs that influenced me growing up:' he said.
Balbi is also riding high off the back of his brilliant debut solo album Black Rainbow and he said while the prospect of "going solo" was daunting at first, it is proving to be one of the most rewarding experiences of his career.
really rewarding:' Aside from the solo album, 2014 is
shaping up to be another big one for Balbi with another, long-awaited Noiseworks album slated for release this year.
