I’m Filipino, not Irish. Nevertheless, I’vebeen celebrating St. Patrick’s Day mywhole life. This year is no different. I’ll
don my green shirt and miniature lep-rechaun hat, eat corned beef and cabbage, and maybe even have a green beer (ortwo).
The luck of the Irish, as far as I’m con-cerned, isn’t reserved for those of Irishdescent. My family has been making good-luck habits part of everyday life sincebefore I was born. In the spirit of St. Paddy’sDay, here are five fortuitous practices foryour home, from my family to yours.
1. Bless it. Whenever our relatives or closefriends move into a new place, theyalways make sure to have it blessed first. When I moved into my apartment, I’lladmit, I didn’t do this right away. Buteventually, my neighbors and I cametogether and we got several unitsblessed by a kahu. Better late than never.
2.Go green. Plants symbolize growth, andmy mom has always kept them insidethe home for good luck. Bamboo, in par-ticular, is renown for being lucky and easyto care for.
3.Keep bags off the floor. This is especiallytrue for a purses, which contain money.(Another superstition: Keep money in allyour purses and wallets at all times.)Putting them on the floor means youdon’t value what’s inside, so add sometables or hooks to your home to makekeeping them elevated effortless.
4.De-clutter. This is easier said than done, especially because I come from a familyof pack rats. Although we have a tenden-cy to keep more than we should, noneof us will ever block the front door.Doing so would be blocking good for-tune, opportunities or even visitors fromcoming in.
5.Mind the bed. Make your bed everymorning to set the tone for the day. Also, make sure there are no mirrors facingthe bed and avoid placing it in the directpath of the doorway.
The Irish may have their natural luck, butsome of us might have to try a little. Thesepractices are just some of the many super-stitions my family follows, but if you want toincorporate some time-told traditions, consider studying up on feng shui. AliceInoue is a local feng shui expert and justmight be able to offer you the guidanceyou are seeking.

Metal’s share of the residential roof-ing market is rapidly increasing asmore homeowners think in terms
of sustainability and life-cycle costs. You wanta roof that will last for the long term — onethat you can forget about. Aluminum hasproved to be one of the best metals for usein tropical marine environments such asHawaii.
The Country Manor Aluminum Shake(CMS) roof system was developed by Alcoain 1974, and is now manufactured by ClassicProducts in Piqua, Ohio using 95 percentpost-consumer recycled high-tensile alu-minum. A cool, lightweight, fire-safe CMSroof for your home or townhouse complexmay be just the right answer to solve yourre-roofing problems by offering manyadvantages over other metals and conven-tional roofing, including:
• Aesthetics. Your home doesn’t have toresemble the nearby shopping center justbecause it has a tough and durable alu-minum roof. CMS offers the beauty of realhand-split cedar, without the drawbacks. Thedeep, realistic texture and rough wood grainsurface will add curb appeal to your home.
• Colors. CMS is available in many attractiveearth tones and even multi-hued, texturedfinishes. All the infrared reflecting, cool coat-
ings are formulated using superior Kynar500 resin, which is the toughest and mostweather resistant paint system available.
• Proven Protection. Once installed,Country Manor Aluminum Shakes takescare of its owners. Aluminum roofing is nota new concept. Its advantages have beenproven all around the world. Even in
Honolulu there are hundreds of aluminumroofs more than 60 years old scattered allover the city. Homeowners who have hadthe CMS roof installed often say that theywelcome extreme and stormy weatherbecause it reassures them over and over ofwhat a great decision they made many yearsago to buy a roof from Aluminum ShakeRoofing Inc. The unique four-way interlockand stainless steel fasteners use no clips andthe roof actually holds tighter and tighter aswind speeds increase.
• Quiet Strength. One common questionabout aluminum roofing concerns noise.Early metal roofs had no structural barriersto deaden sound. But CMS with its deep
texture and modern construction methodswork together to form an effective soundbarrier. Most homeowners actually say theylike the way it sounds when it rains.
• Installation. There doesn’t have to be anycompromise to getting a quality installation. Some contractors may take advantage of ahomeowner’s limited knowledge of roofingproducts and proper procedures and cut afew corners to keep the sales price downwhile maintaining their profits. ButAluminum Shake Roofing Inc. will always usethe best materials (even those you don’tsee, such as the patented FoamGuard EPSinserts which are more than 40 percentdenser than what is used in any other roofsystem) and employ proven installationmethods to deliver the highest quality, mostdurable roof and real value to you.
• Warranty. The CMS system is protect-ed with a non-prorated manufacturer’slimited warranty covering 100 percent ofthe cost of both materials and labor foryour lifetime.
To learn more about the roof system, the warranty and for a free detailed esti-mate, call Fred Rehm of Aluminum ShakeRoofing Inc. at 847-8885. ASR has suc-cessfully added value to the thousands ofhomes they have re-roofed all aroundHawaii during the last 24 years.

Get on deck for a ‘cool’ tax timeIt’s that time of the year when we all
scramble to locate the receipts for thepast year and dust off the calculator to
figure out if we will receive any compen-sation for all the hard work. Think aboutbuilding a nice covered deck so you canrelax outdoors to complete the taxreturn next year with the cool Hawaiianbreezes blowing to keep you calm andcollected as you sort through the figures.Summer is just around the corner as welland maybe your thoughts are leaningtoward a suntan deck for a healthy-look-ing you. With Hawaii voted No. 1 as thehappiest state to live in the nation, thisaddition to your home will make yourlifestyle even better. You can inviteyour friends over for that weekendbarbecue that you have been consid-ering for some time.
A deck addition is a great amenity. Itadds architectural curb appeal, andincreases the value of your home.Decks constructed with pressuretreated Douglas Fir species wood areresistant to termites and water dam-age. They are easy to stain, aredurable, require little maintenanceand are beautiful. Another option aredecks constructed with a composite v
such as Trex decking, which are generallyinstalled using stainless steel or coatedscrews. There are several colors available
and the materials range in sizes from1x6, 2x4, and 2x6 feet. Of course, thespacing of the floor joists is a majorfactor in determining which productyou choose. Trex decking has the coloradded to the material by the manufac-turer and never needs painting. It has
the beauty of wood with ultra low main-tenance.
Ipe Hardwood is another considerationand can be oiled for a beautiful, natural-looking finish, which showcases the lum-ber’s natural wood grains. Whether thedeck is constructed with these compo-nents or with ceramic tile, quartzite, orusing an elastomeric topping with a finesand finish, it will be enjoyed by the familyand guests for a lifetime.

Build the bathroom of your dreams
Making your outdoor life blissfulBeing in the most isolated place in the world has its
benefits. Sure there are some drawbacks to life inHawaii, but overall, the positives outweigh the neg-
atives. For example, rarely does the afternoon temperaturedrop below 80 degrees, and open-toed shoes are accept-able forms of footwear at almost nearly every venue.People on the Mainland fantasize about our lives. Are youtaking advantage as you should?
Embracing the Hawaiian lifestyle is relatively simple:spend as much time outside as possible, add water, repeat.Of course, we have to work to support this lifestyle, andthe ocean is not in everyone’s front yard, however, you canstill create your own version of outdoor living. Start in thebackyard — you know, that place where you lost your kids
a few years back, where the grass is taller thenyou?
Use the following formula: BrazilianQuartzite Flagstone + BBQ + Jacuzzi™ =Happy Outdoor Living.
It seems too good to be true, but reallyoutdoor-living bliss is that easy. BrazilianQuartzite is a natural material that looksgreat, is non-slip (so the long-lost kids youfound when you mowed the grass won’t slideinto the neighbors’ fence), and this naturalstone will not kill your wallet. The BBQ is ano-brainer ; nowadays you can get modelsthat do nearly everything with virtually no effort. TheJacuzzi brings the water to your back door, and allows youto relax with oodles of jets massaging each muscle. If yourNew Year’s body has not reached its goal yet, no worries; aJacuzzi lets you enjoy the water in the privacy of your ownhome. Consider something else: You won’t need to worryabout creatures biting your toes in a Jacuzzi, and you cansee the bottom in a Jacuzzi (not always the case with theocean).
Here at Hawaii Home Expo, we can help make your out-door living dream a reality. We have eight new Jacuzzi mod-els that just arrived, all 25 percent off with free standarddelivery, spa stairs included. We can help with financing. Wecarry some of the largest stock of Brazilian Quartzite onthe island. Friendly and knowledgeable, we are your sourcefor maximizing your outdoor living experience. We are con-veniently located at 2933 Koapaka St. in Honolulu.

In the years since, HK Construction and Development hasgrown to produce a vast portfolio of projects such as subdivi-sions and other structures to supplement a wide range of res-idential projects. The fully bonded and insured family businesshas built a stellar reputation through its penchant for providingquality design-and-build projects for customers on Oahu.

For example, lighting fixtures that turn on atyour expected arrival.
According to JackThomasson, HGTV DreamHome House Planner, to getthe biggest bang for your buck, the key is to start adding theseupdates where it matters themost.
“The kitchen is the perfectplace to apply technology thatconnects our home to ourlifestyle,” said Thomasson,“When applied properly, tech-nology in the kitchen can havea greater impact than whenapplied in any other room ofthe house.”
For example, the simpleaddition of a new faucet withtouch technology, like thosefound in the 2013 HGTVDream Home, can add easeand efficiency to everyday tasks.By allowing the water flow tobe activated with a simple tapanywhere on the faucet, handle
or spout, faucets like the DeltaCassidy single-handle pull downkitchen faucet with Touch2OTechnology, help homeownersconserve water and avoidunwanted messes while enter-taining.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I use yourguidance to set up my home, and, althoughour home is for the most part “feng shui-friendly,” we just can’t seem to get things donehere. I know you are also a professionalastrologer. Can you comment on this — is itour personalities that are not compatible? Ifeel it is best to make consistent progress onprojects in the home whereas my husbandgets distracted a lot. I am a Capricorn, myhusband is a Gemini.
Irealized early on that feng shui is notthe answer to everything, no matterhow much I wanted to believe that I
could create luck and harmony simply byclearing clutter, facing an auspicious direc-tion or managing the flow of energy. However, after consulting in hundreds ofhomes and businesses, I now see that wecreate our own luck and harmony with ourawareness.
While feng shui has energetic influenceon a person, it will never change one’sintrinsic nature, but astrology will help youunderstand one’s natural traits and charac-teristics so that you can accept people inyour life for who they are, instead of wish-ing they were someone they are not.
Conflict stems from judgments on behavior
Conflict between the people livingtogether can stem from the need to beright. Most of us express our opinion, believing that we are right, but that sets upthe scenario for an argument wheneveranyone disagrees, judging us as wrong. I betthose of you who are “neat” like to showmy articles to an untidy person in thehome because you want that individual tochange and be more like you! Am I right?
The key is to realize that the person withwhom you are in conflict is probably not try-ing to intentionally upset you, just being hisor natural herself. Can that person changewith intent? Yes! Can you change your per-
spective? Yes! No right or wrong exists, just adifference in perspective. See if you can finda way to inspire the person to change ratherthan judging him or her as “wrong.”
A general look at the signsAstrology can give you general insight
about a person’s nature by looking at whatsign the Sun was in at his or her birth.Although the time and location of birth willshow more precise prevailing influences, you may see a part of yourself, your spouseor children in one or more of the followingdescriptions. If you relate to more than onesign, other planetary influences are likelystrong in your chart. Have fun with this!
Aries: You do not finish what you start, even though you enthusiastically boughteverything for the project. Advice: Makethe starting of a new project conditionalupon finishing the existing project.
Taurus: You procrastinate on projectsthat you know you need to get started on.Advice: Ask a friend to hold you account-able and set up a deadline and reward foryourself for finishing.
Gemini: You likely have 10 differentprojects going on at once, none of which
are completed. Advice: Crossthose you haven’t started offthe list, turn off the phone, and focus on one!
Cancer: Home improve-ment projects interest you,but your need for securitycauses you to hold ontoexcess. Advice: Dispose ofexpired food in the fridge toopen up a flow of energy foryourself.
Leo: You have a lot ofprojects that need to bedone, but often choose tohave fun instead. Advice: Donothing. The Capricorn in thehouse will get fed up and findsomeone else to get it doneor make you feel bad aboutnot doing it.
Virgo: You need to wash your hands tentimes and conditions have to be perfectbefore you start, then you run out of time.Advice: Tell yourself that getting sweaty isokay and you will have time to shower.
Libra: You invite your friends over tohelp and end up socializing instead. Advice:On project day, invite only Capricorn (hardworkers) and Taurus (once they start, theyfinish) friends.
Scorpio: You are all or nothing and willonly work on projects if they interest you.Advice: Ask a Pisces to help. They have ahard time saying no.
Sagittarius: You talk about a project alot yet never seem to get around to it.Advice: Keep talking about it until theCapricorn in the house tells you to getserious and get it done.
Capricorn: You will likely either get itdone yourself or tell someone else to do it.Advice: Make a plan, have a goal, and realizethat everyone is not as goal and achieve-ment-oriented as you.
Aquarius: You will take on any projectbut then procrastinate, and, when working, you are messy and disorganized. Advice:Just do your own thing, no matter what theCapricorn says you should or shouldn’t do.
Pisces: You have great visions of how youwant the project to look when completedbut get distracted by life. Advice: Don’t letothers talk you into helping them on theirprojects. Instead, put your focus on yourself.
So, as you can see, Capricorns are morestructured and want to get to the top ofthe mountain, while Geminis want to jugglemultiple tasks at the bottom — neitherright nor wrong, but, in your case, frustrat-ing. Understanding each other is the firststep, and finding something that will give aGemini a reason to get to the top of themountain is key to both of you gettingwhat you want.
Today is all in good fun, but next week Iwill answer another question along theselines about how astrological signs interactwith each other and what you can do to bemore accepting, creating greater harmonyin the home!

Protect your home fromground termite damageA s Hawaii’s most damaging pest, ground termites are
responsible for nearly $100 million in propertydamage annually. Their ability to enter homes
through miniscule cracks as small as 1/32 inches and eatfrom the ground up enables them to remain undetectedfor months or even years. Ground termites are active 24hours a day and not only destroy wood material, but canalso damage plastic plumbing pipes, sub-flooring and evenswimming pool liners. Hawaii’s warm, humid climate is idealfor ground termites to thrive and their colonies can num-
ber in the millions. To help local homeowners in the constant
battle against ground termites, Island Insuranceis the only insurer in Hawaii to offer a break-through solution — Ground Termite Coverage.Unlike traditional termite prevention methods,Island Insurance Ground Termite Coverageincludes an annual inspection of your home, and if any ground termite damage is detectedand confirmed within the policy period the
damage will berepaired at noadditional cost. If the inspec-tion reveals active groundtermites, Ground TermiteCoverage will treat the infes-tation, then repair the dam-age. Although many types ofpreventative ground termitetreatments are available,Island Insurance is the only
company offering insurance coverage to repair new groundtermite damage to your home, regardless of how extensiveit may be.
This avoids the headaches of unnecessarily drillingground treatment holes in your home’s foundation, annuallyapplying termiticides and regularly monitoring numerousbaiting stations. Treatment is only applied if needed, savingyou time and money. Since Island’s Ground TermiteCoverage will repair new ground termite damage to your

Ground termite home infestation
Twice a year, I make the trip that somany people from Hawaii love —to our ninth island! No, I don’t stay
at the Cal, and I don’t go to gamble or seethe shows. I take these trips for my busi-ness, and like many other interior design-ers, boutique owners and buyers acrossthe country, I attend our industry’s marketevent in glitzy Las Vegas!
The World Market Center in Las Vegascomprises an incredible five million squarefeet, much of which is transformed for thesemi-annual trade show featuring the latestin furniture, lighting, area rugs and accents.Anything and everything you need to makeyour home beautiful can be found in threebuildings with up to 16 floors each.
On my most recent trip in late February,I took my assistants Kara, Julie and Audraalong. We were shopping for clients andour showroom, and of course, looking fornew sources of inspiration. And inspired wegot! I’ll use this column to give you somequick tips about creative repurposing. As I’ve said before, reclaimed furni-
ture and accents are not just a phase. This truly is a whole new way of think-ing and designing. As time goes on,people are finding more and morecreative ways to use not onlyreclaimed wood, but to repurposealmost anything for form or function.
I found these beautiful wall plaquesmade of wood reclaimed from barnfloors at a past Las Vegas Market. Theywere displayed as interesting pieces ofwall art that can be hung either singlyor in multiples to create a grouping. Ihave some at our showroom, and Iused some in a Diamond Head house thatwe remodeled and furnished.
For that client, the Vavuls, I couldn’t findjust the right headboard for the masterbedroom — until I saw these plaques. Whynot put six of them together and turn apiece of art into a one-of-a-kind head-board for a king-size bed? Voila!
Sometimes, even when you have hun-dreds of thousands of square feet of itemsappearing before you day after day, you canlearn to see beyond how they’re displayedand find a creative solution for your designneeds. Take a look at how older, worn andeven broken tennis rackets can be turnedinto a whimsical piece of art.
I took a picture for a clientwhose son is an avid tennisplayer. Wouldn’t this make agreat centerpiece for a kid’sbedroom? Or could it inspiresomeone like you to huntthrough your closet or yourparents’ spare bedroom tosee if you can repurpose
something to create aunique piece of art thatspeaks to you?
Don’t look at things atface value. See what youalready have lying around, look at it in a creative light, and see whether you canmake something decora-tive or functional. It couldbe the most interestingpiece in your home!
I’ll be back next weekwith more for you fromthat treasure house in LasVegas!

Photovoltaic (PV) systems have become increasinglypopular among homes and businesses and consumershave been seeing their electric bills decrease to virtually
nothing. Even with Hawaii’s lucrative tax credits, PV systemscan still be costly for some. EnergyPro Hawaii has stepped upwith affordable energy saving options for Hawaii residents.
Commonly the largest consumer of electricity in the aver-age home is water heating. Many homes have already beenoutfitted with efficient water heating systems, and by law, anynew construction requires the installation of a solar hot watersystem. But there are still many homes that rely on inefficient
water heating systems that can contribute to a highelectric bill. There are a few different types of waterheating solutions, Solar Hot Water Heaters, TanklessGas Systems and Hybrid Heat Pumps. Each of theseare upgrades to an electric heater and have uniquebenefits that can help reduce electricity costs by asmuch as 40 percent.
A Solar Hot Water Heating System is typically theupgrade of choice for most Hawaii residents, and cur-rently Hawaii Energy is offering a $1,000 rebate onany Solar Hot Water System installation from now
until May 24, 2013. Combined with state andfederal tax credits, this makes upgrading to asolar hot water system a no-brainer!
Recently the usage of Hybrid Heat Pumpshave risen in Hawaii homes. Utilized for morespecific applications where space is limited andthe number of people in the household is low,Hybrid Heat Pumps have become a viablesolution. By using Tax credits are also availablefor Hybrid Heat Pumps making them affordable to all.
For homes supplied with gas, Tankless Gas Systemsshould be considered as an option for your water heat-ing needs. Tankless Gas Systems take up very littlespace, are energy efficient and also are reasonablypriced.
EnergyPro Hawaii specializes and is licensed in theinstallation of the above water heating solutions, makingthem experts in energy conservation. Once they havehelped you reduce your bill with other inexpensive
options, they can then assist you with your PV system to helpoffset the rest of your electricity usage.

A concrete commitment to meet homeowners’ needs
BY WENDELL GUIEB
Quality work, satisfaction and good prices are thepriorities at my company, W.G. ConstructionLLC. I started contracting concrete in 1990.
Our company does any amount of work, from small tobig projects. We work with everything from flat groundsto the hardest areas of your project, and we still providea reasonable price.
I will make sure before starting the work that bothparties understand the scope of work when installing aconcrete slab. Also, I’ll make sure to explain what thecontract price is.
When installing a concrete slab, I will install basematerials, compact the base correctly, install wire messor rebar for reinforcement and pour the right poundsper square inch (psi) of concrete. What is importantabout installing concrete is to follow the right procedureof finishing the concrete.
I have worked with different general contractors astheir sub-contractor doing concrete work for bothcommercial and residential projects. I have also built retainingwalls for new homes and perimeter walls. We build any areaof your project, which can include compaction, rebar installa-tion, CMU (concrete) blocks installation or fully grouting thearea. We specialize in building new homes, renovations, addi-tions, “jack up” homes or the smallest project in your home.
We also build new or renovate commercial offices. As the owner, I fully supervise the project to make sure
the job will go according to plan. My crew will always keepthe job site clean and safe. I play the role of quality controlwhen building to make sure we only use quality materials.
My goal is to make sure we finish the job in the committed
time given to the customer. Quality work and sat-isfaction at the end of the project is important.
We work with our clients by meeting withthem first to discuss what type of home anddesign they want. If they don’t have an architect,
we have some architects that we work with to design theirhome the way they want until they are satisfied with thedesign. We can also process the permits for our clients.
Most of our new clients are referred to us by our existingclients, which shows they are satisfied with our work.

It may beawhile beforethe effects of
s e q u e s t r a t i o ninfiltrate our lives. If you don’t wantto tie up yoursavings for a longperiod of time — thinkingyou might need it in thevery near future — here’sa wise suggestion as tohow a very small invest-ment can pay off big time!
Invest in an environmen-tally safe way to save onplumbing bills, appliancerepair, maintenance costsand your water bill. Haraldvon Sydow, the director ofNano Tek-On, the localcompany with a businessmodel based on the sci-ence of technology, hasbeen helping Hawaii’shomeowners protect theirbiggest investment — theirhomes.
If calcium deposits andlimescale are allowed tobuild up in your home’splumbing, the water flowsslower and slower and caneventually require a com-plete overhaul of yourplumbing system, a veryexpensive job, indeed. Andalthough such buildup isinevitable in Hawaii’shomes, such buildup can
be eliminated and prevent-ed from reoccurring.
Limescale and calciumdeposits clog plumbing, decreasing water flow andwasting water. Thesedeposits corrode water-using appliances includinghot-water heaters, washingmachines and dishwashers— even new appliances —and the calcium depositsspot shower doors andkitchen and bathroom fix-tures. You can actuallyspend a small fortune onall the different productsthat advertise their clean-ing prowess and take a lotof elbow grease but don’talways work. By now, youprobably have dollar signsdancing around in youreyes. Not to worry. OnceHydroFlow is installed(Nano Tek-On will install itfor free), there is nothingadditional to purchase andthe water does not runthrough anything otherthan your pipes.
HydroFlow attaches tothe outside of your plumb-
ing (no cutting of pipes)and then it goes to work torid the pipes of corrosionand limescale. HydroFlow issilent, doesn’t change thetaste of your water and it isenvironmentally safe justlike all the products NanoTek-On uses to clean andseal glass, granite and con-crete surfaces, protectingthem from being attackedagain by contaminants. Yousee, the same thing thathappens inside the pipes inyour house also happens toyour windows and walk-ways. It is part of life inHawaii, because ours issalt-filled ocean air thatdeposits minerals onexposed windows and
other porous surfaces. Themineral buildup has an irri-tating way of staining, spot-ting and streaking, eventual-ly ruining your once-beauti-ful granite or glass. NanoTek-On’s environmentallyfriendly process cleans thebuildup on these surfaces, then seals the glass orstone with invisible sealantthat makes these surfacesnonporous. The surfaceswill then repel the contam-inants. And, all you need todo is wipe down the sur-faces to keep them clean.

Cater to your design with the latest trends in cabinetry
B efore purchasing anew set of cabi-nets for your new
kitchen or bathroomremodeling project, thereare some important thingsyou should consider.
First, keep in mind thatcabinets account for 40 to50 percent of the total costof your kitchen or bath-room remodel, so settingyour total budget figure willbe one of the first thingsyou’ll need to do.
Are stock cabinets for you?
Stock cabinets are theleast expensive option andare constructed in standardshapes and sizes; however, they are available in a limit-ed number of woods or fin-ishes and offer few styleoptions beyond basic draw-ers and cupboards.
If you plan on living inyour home for only a shorttime or are working with atight budget, stock cabinetsare your best bet. But if thisis going to be the kitchen orbath of your dreams, youshould look for top-qualityconstruction and materialsfound with semi-customand custom cabinets.
Versatility of semi-custom
Semi-custom cabinetsare factory-built in standardsizes with many options forstorage, design and style. The high end of cabinetconstruction is custom cab-inets, which are constructedin either a workroom to
designer specifications oron-site in any style and fin-ish you choose.
Semi-custom and cus-tom cabinets provide end-less solutions to your stor-age needs: pullout shelvesfor pots and pans; a lazySusan for spices; a winerack; vertical dividers fortrays and cookie sheets;even an appliance garage orpullout bins are all justsome of the standard add-ons available when orderingthese higher-end cabinets.
And if your space is toonarrow for a cabinet andcounter, a tall pantry closetprovides lots of space forpots and pans in the kitchenor towels in the bath.
Make quality your first choice
No matter what type ofcabinet you select, all cabi-nets should have solidframes, door and drawer
fronts, reinforced cornersand closed backs, and thefinish on the wood shouldbe smooth.
Also, cabinet drawersand doors will be openedand closed many timesthroughout the day, so theyshould operate smoothlyand quietly each time.

PACIFIC ISLANDS WINDOW TREATMENTS MARCH 17 • 2013 19
Control the sunlight withthese window coveringsA s we move into
spring, the coldweather is behind
us, the rain begins to sub-side and the sun shines. Werejoice becausewe know sum-mer is rightaround the cor-ner. With all thesunshine toenjoy, we forgetabout the dam-age it can cause. There are different optionsyou can use to control thelight that shines into yourhome but sometimes youmay be sacrificing style inorder to achieve that.
Window coverings are agreat way to control thenatural sunlight that shinestoo strongly through yourwindows. Window treat-ments protect your furni-ture, your carpet, counter-tops and accessories byblocking out UV rays andheat. Short of moving to anew home, you could grow
a tree for more shade, attach awnings over yourwindows or tint your win-dows. You will haveachieved the desired effect
but maybe not the desiredlook. Tree roots may affectyour foundation, awningsmay cause structural dam-age if not installed properlyand tint may not be whatyou wanted stuck ontothose beautiful windows.Consider utilizing windowtreatments as an alternativeor as an addition to any ofthe above.
Window treatments caneffectively block the sunand aid in reducing thetemperature in your home. There are a variety of win-
dow coverings that areavailable and you will mostlikely want to make thechoice based on your ownpersonal style and theambiance you want to cre-ate. As you choose, remember this tip — win-dow coverings reduce solarheat most effectively if thesurface facing the glass is areflective color like white.
One type of windowtreatment that is veryeffective at reducing sum-mer heat is vertical or hor-izontal window blinds. The
reason for this is the slattype window blinds withthe numerous openingsbetween the slats. Theseslats offer versatility as wellas the option to controllight and ventilation byadjusting them to block andreflect the sun. They can betilted, lifted or completelyclosed to allow for varyingdegrees of light to flowthrough.

DIY fixes for concrete problemsA s with other home
maintenance tasks,making your own
repairs to minor concretedamage yourself can preventproblems from becomingworse and turning into some-thing that requires costlyreplacement by professionals. Here are some concreterepair tasks that you can doyourself, and helpful tips fordoing the jobs right:
• Repairing cracks in side-walks and concrete drive-ways - For minor cracks, use
a product like Sakrete'sConcrete and MortarRepair which comes in aneasy-to-use caulk tube orSakrete Concrete Fillerwhich comes in a one quartsqueezable bottle. Largercracks may require a differ-ent product, such as SakreteTop 'n Bond ConcretePatcher.
• For any size crack, begin bycleaning the crack and theconcrete around it. Use awire brush or screwdriverto remove loose chips and
dust from the crack. Then, using a garden hose, squirtwater directly into the crackto force out all loose mate-rial. Allow standing water todrain before filling crack.
• Before you pay a profes-sional to perform the labor-intensive task of ripping upthe old concrete and pour-ing new, consider resurfacingyour worn concrete drive-way, sidewalk or pathway. While resurfacing is a littlemore work than simplypatching cracks, it's still with-
in the abilities of DIYers.
• Products like Flo-CoatResurfacer by Sakrete pourover the existing concreteand, when properly applied, create a durable, visuallyappealing new surface. Besure to clean the concretefirst, especially if there are oilstains, and follow the manu-facturer's directions forapplication to ensure thebest possible results.

Ready to purchase a photovoltaic(PV) system for your home? Yes, it’sa big expense, but with state and
federal tax credits and the right loan, itcould be more affordable than you think.
Hawaii Central Federal Credit Union(HCFCU) has introduced a new SolarPhotovoltaic Loan Special to make it easierfor homeowners to go green and save.
Here is what makes HCFCU’s PV loandifferent from others:
• Unlike the extremely low or 0 percentfinancing offered by some other lenders, the HCFCU Solar Photovoltaic LoanSpecial does not come with hidden feesor mark-ups to the consumer or thesolar contractor.
• HCFCU encourages the borrower toask the contractor for “cash pricing.” Thisallows the consumer to see what theprice for the PV system would be if theyfinanced through HCFCU. Hidden feesare ultimately passed on to the con-sumer by increasing the overall cost ofthe PV system.
• You will be able to work with the solarcontractor of your choice. HCFCU doesnot limit your choices and will work withyour solar contractor.
• HCFCU’s PV loan program is offered asan unsecured personal loan rather than
a home equity line of credit. This allowsyou to free up the equity in your homefor other improvements and uses.
• No payments are due for the first sixmonths, so you can enjoy the benefits ofyour new PV system immediately.
• Quick responses and personal serviceare standard. As a credit union, HCFCUis dedicated to providing the best serv-ice and knows the importance of a fastturnaround.
For more information about this PVloan special or any of the other loan prod-ucts available, call HCFCU’s ConsumerLoan Department at 536-3677, visit theiroffice at 681 S. King St., or access theirwebsite at www.hccu.info. HCFCU is fed-erally insured by NCUA. Certain restric-tions apply. Interest will continue to accrueduring the first six months of the loan. Please consult a tax adviser for tax creditsand benefits.

Still ‘Rock’ stars after 30 yearsBig Rock is a store in Honolulu that is
exceptional. It manufactures and sellsall sorts of things that are unavailable
anywhere else in the world. That’s becauseBig Rock specializes in making copies of ourHawaiian stones and has been doing this for30 years. There is no other business like it.
You can’t imagine how many rocks, boul-ders and pieces of stone the owners, BonnieCooper and Brian Joy, have accumulatedthroughout the 30 years, and they are alwaysadding to the collection. Some of the beau-tiful stone bowls and unusual boulders havebeen lent by homeowners, who have seenand appreciated the quality of the copies andwanted to contribute to the collection.
Molds are taken from the original piecesthey find, and then reproductions are cast ina lightweight concrete. There is unquestion-ably no way a person can tell the differencebetween Big Rock and the real thing, and justthink of how much of our islands’ naturalstone has been conserved through BigRock’s method of casting copies!
Even after 30 years here on Oahu thereare still many people who may have “heard”about Big Rock, but have never taken thetime to visit the showroom, and Bonnie and
Brian confirm this each time they participatein one of Oahu’s many trade shows: “Thepeople are always excited and impressed
with the few things they see at our show dis-plays, but admit they have not been to thestore. Once they come, they are happy theydid and always spread the word to friendsand neighbors.”
Why would you use Big Rock? Well, it ismuch lighter weight than real rock, for exam-ple, the boulders do not have to be dug intothe ground as they already have a flat bot-tom. The Moss Rock stepping stones are 3inches thick and ready to place, but they lookas though you have miraculously found nat-ural rock for a pathway that is flat! The stoneitems can be used to dress up lanais too, sur-rounded with a bit of river rock and perhaps
a small fountain.Big Rock stone veneer is used to cover
any and all wall surfaces, giving you a naturalstone wall appearance, but it’s only about 1and ½ inches thick and is easy to install!Actually all Big Rock stone products are easyto use, and Brian and Bonnie always encour-age homeowners to consider doing thework themselves, whether it’s a rock wall orgarden project.
Big Rock has the stone veneer, stonebenches and tables, boulders, stone bowls ofmany sizes, bridges, garden edgers, ponds, waterfall boulders, garden ornaments,
Buddhas, tikis and much more. Of course, not everything at Big Rock is made there. Some garden accent pieces and other good-ies are brought in, such as a variety of rainchains, Japanese-style lanterns, bamboo foun-tain kits, pond pumps, liners, filters, underwa-ter lighting, birdbaths, decorative fountainsand more than a dozen pre-cast waterfalls.
Big Rock would like to invite you to comeby for a visit. You don’t have to buy, but theywould like you to see how 30 years of beingHawaii’s “Rock” stars has made themfamous for the quality and uniqueness oftheir products.

A s American Carpet One cele-brates its 39th Anniversary as alocally owned and operated full-
service home floor and design center, thecompany continues to grow and improvealong with the communities it serves.
It began serving Hawaii on Jan. 2, 1974 ina 1,000-square-foot space with just fiveemployees. Fast forward nearly fourdecades later, and American Carpet Onehas grown to include 110 employees fromadministrative staff to installers working outof its current Sand Island locale, whichincludes an 8,000-square-foot showroomand 33,000 square feet of warehousespace. The ample storage capacity allowsthe company to stock the most flooringproduct in the Islands, while also expeditingthe delivery and installation of products forits customers.
American Carpet One was the first tointroduce Stainmaster to Hawaii in 1986,and became a Stainmaster Flooring Center— one of 200 nationwide. The distinctiongave the company access to the exclusiveproducts and services, as well as the UltraLife Advantage, which affords customers awarranty on the products.
The company also benefits from itsinvolvement with the Carpet One cooper-ative, which it joined in 1988 and serves asthe seventh largest cooperative in theworld. The cooperative includes roughly1,200 other locally owned and operatedbusinesses across the U.S., Canada, NewZealand, Australia and Guam. According toAmerican Carpet One sales managerAaron Okamoto, collectively last year thecooperative generated more than $3.8 bil-lion in floor covering purchases, and theresulting savings are passed on to the cus-tomers here in Hawaii.
In 2001, American Carpet One intro-duced its insurance division. While theoperation does not sell insurance, it is thedesignated floor covering installer for StateFarm, Allstate, USAA, Fireman’s Fund andFarmer’s Insurances. The service is set up asa direct repair program through which theinsurance carriers have enrolled, so whencustomers file a claim, the carriers thenassign American Carpet One to handle thejob.
Three years later, American Carpet One
became the first to offer one of the mostpopular flooring options on the market inKarndean — a vinyl floor covering billed as“The Perfect Floor.” The Luxury Vinyl Tilerepresents the fastest-growing floor cover-ing category in the world. As Okamotoexplained, “It’s a pure vinyl that provides astain resistant flooring option. The productfits with our island lifestyle. When installedproperly, it makes your floor pretty muchwater resistant, so in the event of flooding,it will survive. Anytime wood, laminate orcarpet gets damaged, you need to rip itout, throw it away, and start again. This isone floor that will survive, and termites
haven’t figured out how to eat it yet, sowe’re calling it the perfect floor. The designapplications are endless.”
For large industrial flooring replacementprojects, American Carpet One acquired asecret weapon: The Terminator. The ride-along scraping machine pulls up all sorts offlooring, from vinyl to wood and carpet, and makes way for new applications. Theprocess has led to substantial reductions inlabor costs, which equate to savings forcustomers. Three years ago, the companyalso introduced a Healthier Living installa-tion process, which guarantees to improvethe indoor air quality during a flooringinstallation by killing bacteria and allergensand purifying the air.
Last year, American Carpet One becamethe first company in Hawaii to have all its
journeymen carpet installersapproved by CertifiedFloorcovering Installers (CFI), aninternational non-profit organiza-tion established in the early 1990s.The installers are trained and cer-tified with the end goal of assistinghomeowners and customers byensuring that those working ontheir projects are indeed qualified. Installersworking at the company need to pass bothwritten and performance tests in order togain CFI certification. These certifiedinstallers are identified by the CFI seals onboth their uniforms and work vehicles.
“We don’t just sell flooring; we build
relationships in the community,” saidOkamoto. “We make friends and that’swhat it’s all about.”
