A Time of Preparation!
A few friends and I were sitting on our bicycles in the middle of the street having a very intense discussion. It was in the mid 1960’s and we were pretty shaken up because it had been said that the world was coming to an end that week, possibly that night. What really convinced me and heightened my anxiety was that one kid said that Billy Graham even said it was
so.
Holy Cow, if Billy Graham said it, it was gospel to me because even then, he was my hero. Now, truthfully, I don’t know if Billy Graham ever said that or not but hearing it from a friend put the fear in me.
We all departed that evening not knowing if we were going to see each other again and it was quite concerning for each of us.
I guess every generation thinks “Well, this has got to be it, things can’t get any worse.” Yet, still they do indeed seem to get worse.
So, to date, I would say there has never been a time where the need for Spiritual renewal and awareness and lifestyle was more crucial than right now … Today!
We need a giant leap forward in our commitment to and love for Jesus Christ.
To that end, we have a few things planned to help us evaluate our selves as individuals and leadership and churches as well as an association. We need strong spiritual leadership and we need action.
On September 29th we will be having an associational Deacon Training event that will be held at Corinth Baptist Church in Elizabeth City. Details regarding times and agenda will be released in the next few days. We will discuss the biblical example and teaching of what a deacon is and what a deacon does. I hope every church will have deacons and pastors registered for
this training.
On October 5th we are calling on all of our associational pastors and pastoral staff to come together at 6:30 p.m. at Hertford Baptist Church for an event we are calling a Solemn Assembly. This will be a time to come before the Lord in Worship and Prayer seeking a fresh fire from Him and a season of change in our selves and then in our churches. Our prayer is that this
will be a catalyst to a Spiritual Awakening in the Chowan Baptist Association.
Then from Sunday evening, October 21st through the 24th we will be participating in a City Wide Tent Revival in Elizabeth City. This revival is set up in an area that has been identified as one of the top 200 pockets of lostness in North Carolina. We are partnering with many churches in the area and are praying for a great time of Harvest. Our prayer is that this revival will
extend into our churches and others across the region and beyond.
I am very aware that every pastor and deacon and church member in our association has more to do than they can reasonably handle and may find it difficult to fit in one more thing. But I am convinced the time is surely now to invest our
best energy and ability to “Seek the Lord with all of our Heart!”

For many of our churches, the new church year is rapidly approaching. Budgets are being prepared, and nominating committees are busily at work. As usual, Dr. Chuck Lawless has some timely advice for churches and its leaders as we move toward October. Prayerfully consider these insights today.
1. “Everybody’s important, but nobody other than Christ is irreplaceable. The church will go on without any of us. If you think you’re irreplaceable, God will show you otherwise. Trust me.
2. How God brought you here matters, but how you leave matters even more. How you
leave is what people remember. Leave poorly, and that’s all people will remember about you.
3. Church membership assumes members are Christians, but no one should assume that
every member is a believer. The Bible does not allow us to ascribe Christianity to people who consistently live like the world – and even Jesus had a fake among His group.
4. Giving financially is a part of Christianity, but Christian giving means giving yourself fully. Money is one necessary part of that expectation, but money is not a weapon. As soon as
you try to manipulate the church through your giving, you’re no longer giving yourself.
5. Membership is about being a family, but being family doesn’t mean everybody gets to know everything. Some issues require confidentiality—or at least a limited sphere of folks who know the details. That choice is actually a loving one for the people involved.
6. You should love your church, but know it’s not your church. Nor is it your pastor’s church. Or mine. Or anyone else’s, other than God. Even if your name is on the church building, it’s not yours.
7. The church consists of volunteers, but serving through the church is not optional. The New Testament knows of Christ-followers who wander and congregations who fight, but still it calls us to gather with believers (Heb. 10:25). Our volunteer status does not give us permission to live apart from the church.
8. You have a voice, but the significance of your voice is directly proportional to the level of your involvement. In my judg-ment, uninvolved people should not have much say in what the church does. A lack of commitment weakens one’s opinion.
9. The gospel offers rest, but church membership assumes work. Nothing in the Bible gives us room for an “inactive” church membership; instead, being part of the body of Christ means you will fulfill your unique role in the work.
10. We want you to come, but we’re going to challenge you to go. That’s what the gospel does, so we’re going to do the same. We want you going . . . to your neighbors to tell them the gospel . . . to the poor to minister to them . . . to the nations to introduce them to Jesus. Don’t come with the assumption that you’ll get to sit.”
Axioms of Church Membership August 16, 2018
Chuck states in the article that these are just some thoughts he has, and I believe that we should carefully consider them. Why? Too much is at stake not to.

Greetings Ladies of the WMU,
As I am typing this letter to you today, I have just returned from a month's vacation
with my husband. What a relaxing time in the Lord it has been. I am amazed at
what a little time away can do for body and soul. Time of seeing the wonders of this
earth, take pictures of Gods beauty, and spending time with family. My hope is that
all of you dear ladies find time to spend with God and His wonders. Our world is so
fast paced and electronics take up so much of our time that we miss opportunities to
see our God in his creation or we miss a true relationship with him because we have
to keep up with what is on facebook.
I encourage you to spend time with Him, meditate on his Word, spend time in prayer
and He will guide your footsteps in missions.
Psalm 119:15-16
I will meditate on Your precepts And regard Your ways. I shall delight in Your statutes; I shall not forget
Your word.

THE BANQUET
There are banquets, and then there are banquets. Plan to join us on Saturday, September 15, 6 p.m. @ Camp Cale. The main feature different for this year is a completed Bunkhouse. Yes, we want you to come and enjoy some great food (Montero’s) and some great fellowship, and testimonials, and music, but we also want you to see the Bunkhouse in final form, and to participate in a special BLESSING, that will happen sometime during the evening.
You can get tickets from any planning committee member or Management group member or from the Cale office (call 264-2513). The tickets are $25 each, and we have currently over 30 business sponsors, but we want and need you to come and write a check. If we can have 100 people write checks of $500 or more, we’ll be a long way toward paying off the building debt.
Here are some interesting facts:
Over 80 “memorial” or “in honor” gifts for bunk sponsorships. That’s over $40,000. We’re capping bunk sponsorships at 96 gifts.
Over 100 staff and counselors have been trained to do ministry since 2000.
Over 1000 campers have made professions of faith or rededications since 20000.
Record attendance @ summer camp this summer 2018: We should be able to house at least 50 more campers next summer with the addition of the Bunkhouse.
Ready for youth groups and collegiates: Plan for a weekend using the Bunkhouse, Conference Center, and the many Program options; the best you’ll find anywhere.
Begin with the Banquet, and Use CALE to help your church grow.

The Dearest Place on Earth
“Give yourself to the Church. You that are members of the Church have not found it perfect and I hope that you feel almost glad that you
have not. If I had never joined a Church till I had found one that was perfect, I would never have joined one at all! And the moment I did
join it, if I had found one, I should have spoiled it, for it would not have been a perfect Church after I had become a member of it. Still,
imperfect as it is, it is the dearest place on earth to us…
As I have already said, the Church is faulty, but that is no excuse for your not joining it, if you are the Lord’s. Nor need your own faults
keep you back, for the Church is not an institution for perfect people, but a sanctuary for sinners saved by Grace, who, though they are
saved, are still sinners and need all the help they can derive from the sympathy and guidance of their fellow Believers.
The Church is the nursery for God’s weak children where they are nourished and grow strong. It is the fold for Christ’s sheep—the home
for Christ’s family.”
The above quote by the great Baptist preacher, Charles Spurgeon is so true of the church. It is the dearest place on earth. The church is
not a country club. The church is not a coffee shop. The church is not a social club. The church is the body of Christ.
The church is a place where we are called to “one another.” If we were to search the Scriptures we would see all these one another’s.
Be at peace with one another (Mark 9:50). Love one another (John 13:34). Honor one another (Rom. 12:10). Serve one another (Gal.
5:13). There are many more in the Scriptures.
Paul writes in Galatians 6:1-2, “Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of
gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of
Christ.”
I pray that in our churches we are following these verses. Are we willing to confront one another when we have sinned? Do we care
enough for our brother or sister in Christ, to follow what Paul says? To graciously confront someone in their sin? But at the same time,
being open to someone speaking into our life. Are we willing to bear one another’s burdens?
I pray that we are doing this. Do not be afraid to let people into the messiness of our life. Yes, it is not easy to be confronted. But God
will use it to help make us more like His Son. Let people speak into your life. Listen to them. I know I am grateful for those people who
have come to me and pointed out my sin.

We wanted to make you aware about some up and coming financial seminars in North Carolina. Davis Blount with the Compensation and Benefit Services group of the Baptist State Convention will be in 7 separate locations late in 2018 and we are asking for your help advertising the workshops. The locations and registration are on our web site at ncbaptist.org/financialseminar August 21: Aberdeen, NC September 4: Pisgah Forest, NC September 11: Winston Salem, NC September 11: Mooresville, NC September 13: West Jefferson, NC October 4: Raleigh, NC October 25: Zebulon, NC Here is more information in reference to the seminar from Davis: Developing a compensation package for pastors and church staff can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. There is no
such thing as a "cookie cutter" approach, and there are many things to consider such as salary, employer provided benefits,
tax savings strategies, and more.
Is your staff ready for retirement? What cash and non-cash benefits can the church provide its staff? What are the latest tax
and administrative rules implemented during the last year that affect how our churches do business? How do you handle
designated contributions given to your church, and how are you reporting those funds?
"Let all things be done decently and in order" based on 1 Corinthians 14:40 is the theme of the 2018 financial and tax work-
shops presented by senior consultant Davis Blount with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina to address these and
other issues. The workshops are designed for ministers, financial administrators, treasurers, church committees and other
interested lay leaders. Topics will include:
Preparing for retirement.
Compensation planning.
The Church Retirement Plan.
Employer provided benefits.
Managing designated funds.
Reporting charitable giving.
Tax updates.
