Objective :
• What is the importance to be aware of Code & Standard and Specs?
The motivator and the need ?
• To find a reference , a guideline , a rule ; a road map
compatible technically with all of our project requirements and
respected by all of us ( owner & consultant & contractor )
CODE
STANDARD
SPECIFICATION
Clarifications :
• What does it mean Code & Standard and Specs?
• The relation between them
• ICC ( International Council of Codes )
• SBC ( Saudi Building Code )
• Examples
Clarifications of Code , Standard and Specs Linguistically
• Code : icon , character , sign , law , rule
شفرينظام
• Standard : Level , scale , caliber , size , grade
نموذج ، معيار، مستوي
• Specification : elaboration , description , detailing , indentation
مواصفه ، تفصيل ، تخصيص
Clarification of Code :
• Is a standard that has been adopted by one or more governmental bodies and has the Force of law, or when it has been incorporated into a business contract; providing a set of rules that specify the minimum acceptable level of safety for manufactured, fabricated or constructed objects.
• CODES “tell you when and where they should be applied on scientific and engineering bases with the aim of ensuring the minimum requirements of safety and public health.
• Examples : IBC , IRC , IMC , IFC , SBC ,…..
Clarification of Standard :
• Is a set of technical definitions and guidelines “how to do " instructions for designers and manufacturers. They serve as a common language, defining quality and establishing safety criteria.
• “ They tell you how to meet the codes and what to do specifically “
• Examples- ASTM standard, ISO standard and Aramco Standard
• Material Standard cover. ; Chemical and Mechanical Property of raw material and finished product • Yield, tensile strength, elongation, hardness ; Mechanical testing requirements •Tensile test, bending test, etc.
• Dimension Standard cover; Different standard for different components gives product specific requirements
• Pipe − Pipe sizes, ASME B36.10 - Welded & Seamless wrought iron pipes
• ASME B36.19 - Stainless steel pipes
• Butt welded fittings;
• ASME B16.9 - Factory-Made Wrought Butt welding Fittings
• ASME B16.28 - Wrought Steel Butt Welding Short Radius Elbows and Returns
• Socket & Threaded fittings
• ASME B16.11- Forged Steel Fittings, Socket-Welding and Threaded
Clarification of Specification :
• Is a specific description of the design and materials used to make something. They are set of instructions and/or requirements over and above requirements given in Code & Standard. Must meet requirements
• Specs tell you which vendors, manufacturers are specifically required
• Often generated by private companies to address additional requirements applicable to a specific product or application
• Examples- Company Provided specification, Product specification
International Code Council :
ICC – 2 :
ICC – 3 :
ICC : A new edition is promulgated each 3 years :
International Codes : IBC ( International Building Code )
• Is a model code that regulates the design and installation of building systems
• The first edition on 2000
IRC (International Residential Code )
• Is a model code that regulates the design and installation of Residential systems
• The first edition on 2000
IMC (International Mechanical Code )
• Is a model code that regulates the design and installation of mechanical systems
• The first edition (1996)
IFC (International Fire Code )
• Is a model code that regulates the design and installation of a fire prevention and protection systems that safeguard the public health and safety from fire, explosion, handling or use of hazards materials
• The first edition on 2000
International Codes :
IPC (International Plumbing Code )
• Is a model code that regulates the design and installation of plumbing systems
• The first edition on 1995
IECC (International Energy Conservation Code )
• Is a model code that regulates the design and installation of energy – efficient building envelopes mechanical, lighting and power systems
• The first edition on 1998
IFGC (International Fuel Gas Code )
• Is a model code that regulates the design and installation of fuel gas systems and gas-fired appliances systems
• The first edition on 1997
IPSDC (International Private Sewage Disposal Code )
• Is a model code that regulates the design and installation of individual sewage disposal systems?
• The first edition on 1995
Saudi Building Code :
Saudi Building Code:
• It started with the issuance of the Royal Decree No. 7/B/3230 dated
11th June 2000 so as to form a national committee composed of
representatives of Saudi universities and the governmental and
private sectors
• In the beginning of September 2001, the Council of Ministers approved the General plan of the National Committee to prepare a unified building code for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Building Code : • To choose a reference code on which a Saudi Building Code is to be based, ( ICC & EC ),
Arab and International experiences building standards, regulations and plans of the
governmental departments and authorities have been studied.
• The technical committees and sub-committees started their work in the beginning of
April 2003 to prepare the general framework of the Saudi Building Code that adapts the
base Code with the social and cultural environment, the natural and climatic conditions,
types of Soil and properties of materials in the Kingdom. It was approved by the Council of
Ministers Decree No. 279 dated 19 December 2004.
• All efforts were done to suit the Saudi Arabian environment and conditions with due recognition of the requirements so that the SBC has made to accommodate local conditions and practices in current use in the Kingdom.
• Code Cover Architectural,Structural,Electrical,Mechanical,Energy Conservation,Sanitary Fire Protection,Existing Buildings First Edition: January 2007
As Example; Ventilation:
• Code is clarifying the importance of protecting the building occupant health by controlling the quality of indoor Air by removing contaminants as ventilation is necessary and desirable for the control of air contaminants, moisture and temperature and how much air rates and one air change are required depending upon the types of activity and the volume of location but obligatory by Law
• Standard:
• Is telling you how to meet the codes and what to do specifically by clarifying the types of Air distribution systems ; ducts , the pressure classifications , the aspect ratio , outlets , the distances of supports and the thickness of duct as per SMACNA
• Specifications :
They are telling you which Vendors of Ductworks ( Like X ), Air Fans
( Like Y ) ,Outlets , inlets, sound attenuators ( Like Z ) are specifically required
Updating codes :
•As examples :1- The differences between IMC codes of 2012 / 2015
2- USA applying different codes ; 2003 – 2015 & x & blank
The differences between IMC codes of 2012 / 2015
