FRIDAY FLYER
We are so pleased with our son’s progress at St
Dominic’s, I can’t imagine him going anywhere else!
He’s turned from being the child who regularly refused
school, to never once asking if he has to go to school
today. He seems so at ease at St Dominic’s now – not
wearing his coat and hood all day any more speaks
volumes.
Over a quarter of a million school children
and young people across the UK take part
in ‘No Pens Day Wednesday’, a day which
is used to encourage schools and settings
to put down their pens and run a day of
speaking and listening activities.
This will be taking place on Wednesday 24th
November.

The 6th
Form Art & Photography A-Level students
had an amazing trip to The Tate Modern Art
Gallery in London this week.
They travelled by train and walked along the
South Bank by the Thames which was a great
opportunity for our photographers.
At the gallery they saw some fantastic art and
spent time discussing and relating it to their own
art and interests.
Well done all of you, it was one of the most
successful art trips ever!
6th Form
Needs-Led Curriculum
This term, 6th Form have been practising their functioning independent skills by cooking. This week
they cooked spaghetti bolognaise, they all helped with the preparation i.e. peeling and cutting the
onions and carrots and cooking the pasta and sauce. Afterwards they were able to sit down to eat the
fruits of their labour. Well done 6th Form!
Therapy – ELSA
Mrs R-T
Emotional Literacy Support Assistants – otherwise
known as ELSAs - are people who are trained to
provide emotional and social skills support to
children.
Here at St Dominic’s we are lucky enough to have
five trained ELSAs. Yes, you heard right… FIVE!
ELSA is an initiative developed and supported by
educational psychologists. It recognises that
children learn better and are happier in school if
their emotional needs are also addressed.
We have been trained by Educational Psychologists
to plan and deliver programmes of support to pupils who are experiencing
temporary or longer-term additional emotional needs.
Children are usually referred for ELSA support by
their class teacher. We then identify and prioritise
which children require a weekly programme or, if
more appropriate, put supported strategies in place
within a class setting.
ELSA programmes usually run for 6-12 weeks. Some
of the areas that ELSA covers are: self-esteem and
confidence, team building, friendships and social
interactions, loss and bereavement, anxiety and
anger management, and understanding emotions and
feelings.
Interventions are totally unique and tailored to the
child’s needs. The sessions can be structured but
with fun activities. They may also be unstructured
and include games, arts and crafts or just time to
talk and listen to the child.
Children learn many new skills at school, not just academic but also social and
emotional skills. An ELSA can help children and young people learn to understand
their emotions and respect the feelings of those around them.
Pupils are provided with the time and space to think about their personal
circumstances and how they manage them.
While ELSAs are not there to solve, or ‘fix’, children's problems, we can provide
emotional support.
We aim to establish a warm, respectful relationship with a pupil and to provide a
reflective space where they are able to honestly share their thoughts and
feelings.
If you feel that ELSA interventions may be beneficial to your child, please
contact your child's teacher who will be able to help with a referral.

St. Dominic’s School Social Communication Programme
STAY ON TRACK
The target is to encourage the individual to stay on task and not to get distracted by other things, such as own thoughts or other
people/events.
Facts re ASD
Many pupils have difficulty recognising what is and is not relevant and may just focus on details that interest them
Some research suggests that difficulties could be related to deficits in executive functioning (includes working memory, planning, cognitive flexibility and inhibitory control)
A child with Asperger’s can disregard requests to focus on things they perceive as uninteresting simply by blocking it out. Suggested Script
You need to Stay on Track. You need to finish this page of maths……
You need to Stay on Track. We are talking about the characters in the book not about football.
Hints and Tips
Pupils may need to be reminded to stay on topic or task
This will help the pupil to achieve the ‘on task’ point
The ability to focus attention on the given task will support the development of communication skills and social appropriacy
Increased understanding of how to focus and maintain attention will have a positive impact on pupil progress.
