Children’s University 11th January and 1st February 2017
As most parents are aware, Ryders Green is a member of the Black Country Children’s
University and as such, again this year, we set up a number of after school clubs. The clubs
allow the children to experience a range of extra-curricular activities with other children across
the school. Each child that attends a club holds an official Children’s University Passport where
upon all hours spent doing extra-curricular activities are logged.
30hrs — Bronze Award, 65hrs — Silver Award, 100 hrs — Gold Award. Children exceeding
these hours will receive diplomas and degrees.
Parents were invited to watch their children, who achieved any of the above awards, experience a
graduation ceremony and receive their award in recognition of their achievements.

On 26th January pupils from years 3 –6 very excitedly climbed aboard a coach to be whisked away
to the Genting Arena in Birmingham to perform the music and lyrics they have been learning over
the past few weeks in this ‘once in a life time experience’ as part of the Young Voices Concert. The children were part of a massed choir of 6000+ and performed songs such as: Birdhouse in my
soul, a Zimbabwean song called Maliswee, Sing! and Ain’t no Mountain High Enough.
The children had a memorable experience and hope to share some of the songs with you as part of
the summer concert.
Young Voices Provides children with the opportunity to perform in some of the world’s greatest arenas alongside incredible artists which has a massive impact on the children involved.
Furthermore, to achieve this with all their school friends around them for support, helps their self-belief, confidence and ability to communicate as part of a team, which is invaluable. Add to this the numerous health benefits of consistent singing in rehearsals, from breathing regulation to re-lieving stress, it’s no wonder that Young Voices is over-subscribed year after year.
One of the highlights of the whole process is to see the pride that the children have in their own performance, and this is further amplified when their parents are able to share the experience as part of the audience.
There is a massive sense of achievement gained from rehearsing and finally being able to per-
form in some of the world's largest arenas.
Here are the thoughts of the children who took part;
‘I enjoyed it when everyone jumped up and down and the lights turned everyone different
colours’ — Amritha.
‘It was an opportunity of a lifetime and would go again if I had the chance’ — Rhianna.
‘I thought Young Voices was great, next time I recommend we sit closer to the stage’ - Millie.
‘The dance moves were funny’ - Elisha. ‘I liked the flashlights’ - Zoona.
‘It was fun and I recommend it to every child in the world’ — Skye.
‘I enjoyed the raps and want to go again’ - Emilial. ‘Andy and David’s silly dances’ - Elisha.
‘I thought Young Voices was really good and it was very exciting, my favourite part was when we
sang ‘Bluebird In Your Soul’ - Elleja.
‘I enjoyed it when the lights were shining on us and when we were rapping’ - Sammiyah.
‘I enjoy doing different concerts and learning new songs’ - Rihanna
‘I liked it because instead of listening to people, we got to join in!’ - Nasrin.
‘The concert was really good and the beat boxers were really fun’ - Kelsey.
‘I liked the boom boxers moves’ - Chloe. ‘I enjoyed doing the dancing and singing’ - Jada.
‘The beat boxers were amazing’ - Baljeevan. ‘I liked it when we got to do the actions’ - Vy.

remind you of the speed you are travelling around the school area and where you are parking. Please do
not obstruct the pavement, babies in buggies, disabled people and everyone in general need access. Also,
please do not park on the double yellow lines they are there for a reason. There is also a speed limit of
5mph on the driveway. Parents should not be using the main driveway unless it is an emergency.
If found parking illegally or speeding, police will issue fixed penalty notices of £30.00.

We strongly recommend that you check exact dates with school - especially before you book a
holiday.
You may get fined if you take your children out of school during term time.
Schools can now issue fines to parents who take their children out of school during term time.
Please think carefully before booking a holiday in term time. You should consider the potential
impact on your child's education.
Statistics show that 10 days' absence in any academic year means pupils' learning suffers and they
do worse in tests and exams.
Remember that schools do not have to provide work for students taking holidays during term time.
Leave of Absence During Term Time
Attendance
This half term our attendance is 96.2%
For the year so far, it is 96.1% — Well done.
We have 34 pupils with 100% attendance
for the whole year — well done lets see how
many of you can keep this up.
ATTENDANCE NOTE TO PARENTS
If children are taken out of school during Term
Time it is classed as unauthorised absence. If it
extends to more than 10 days we can and will
remove your child from roll. Attendance
Services collect all absences and will take
further action if necessary.
Requests for leave of absence—Parents will be
required to attend a meeting with the chair of Governors,
Head Teacher and PSA. Please make sure you give
enough notice to be able to schedule a meeting.
World Book Day - 2nd March 2017
Children can come to school dressed as their favourite book character.
There will be a book stall where children can buy books for as little as
£1 and no more than £2. Also Mr Gadd is running a competition for the children

What your children have been up to in the After School Clubs
During the Autumn term Band, Ukulele and choir performed during Christmas events: pre-concert ensemble for Christmas Fayre. Some choir and band performed at a residential home. Twenty two of our Choir members took part in Young Voices at the Genting Arena. All the music clubs will now be preparing for the end of year concert in June.
In Mr Gadd’s Yr6 Booster class this half term they have been focusing on some of the skills necessary for the arithmetic test. They have looked at subtraction and addition of mixed fractions in particular. They will continue this in to next half term and will spend time working through worded problems, applying the skills they have learnt.
It has been a very successful start to 2017 in Miss Swingler’s Netball Club for years 3 & 4 - They have more members than ever! So far they have been learning and putting
into practise a range of different passes including chest pass, bounce pass and shoulder pass. Next term, they will be focusing on different defending tactics and techniques.
In Miss Geddes’s theatre club, over the last couple of weeks the children have started to look at Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The children have performed in mini auditions, reading from a script as different characters. Next half term they will be rehearsing the play each week with the hope of performing it to some of the children in school.
This half term Science Club with Miss Davis, have been focusing on the area of Geology. The children have spent the half term finding different rocks in the Nursery Garden. They have since used these rocks to describe them using adjec-
tives. They have examined the rocks like Geologists, measuring and weighing them. The children have briefly discussed the different rock types and how they are formed. They are now moving on to focus on Chemistry for a few weeks. Last week the children set up an experiment called 'Colourful Sugar'. They predicted what was going to happen, ask your children what their predictions were and if their predictions were correct.
In Green fingers gardening club with Mrs Love, the children have been learning about healthy foods and how to grow them . They have designed their own gardens.
