Update About A New Priest-‐in-‐Charge for the Benefice of Ashburnham with Penhurst
Over the last few months we have been wonderfully supported by the Rt Rev'd Richard Jackson, Bishop of Lewes and the Archdeacon of Hastings, Dr Edward Dowler in working through the process in order that we can now advertise the
vacancy for a new Priest-‐in-‐Charge for Ashburnham with Penhurst. This has meant agreeing our Parish Profile and the advert for the vacancy with them.
The advert below will now appear in the Church Times, the Chichester Diocese and our Church web sites from the 9th June. We will also be sending a copy of the St Peter's Profile to our Church Family and posting a copy on the church web site.
Please pray with us to Our Heavenly Father that we continue to grow and indeed flourish during this time without a Priest-‐in-‐Charge and that in His timing a new
Parish Priest is appointed.
Diocese of Chichester, Battle and Bexhill Deanery, East SussexBenefice of Ashburnham with Penhurst PRIEST-‐IN-‐CHARGE (House for Duty)
The Bishop of Chichester and the Patrons, the Ashburnham Christian Trust, seek to appoint a Priest-‐in-‐Charge for the benefice of Ashburnham with Penhurst, with principal pastoral responsibility for the worshipping community at St Peter’s Ashburnham (there is an
Associate Vicar in post who takes responsibility for Penhurst). In addition to the two village churches, a close partnership exists with the Ashburnham Christian Trust conference and prayer centre, and the Penhurst Retreat Centre, which welcome many people during the
year, including many students and are both closely tied in with the parishes. We are looking for a person who will be:
• A good leader and effective communicator who is positive and energetic in seeking growth, building on existing initiatives and fostering new ones.
• Confident in presenting a personal faith in Jesus, in the evangelical tradition of the benefice; clear in teaching scripture; comfortable with both formal and informal worship, and with the ordained ministry of both men and women
• Pastorally aware and willing to be involved wholeheartedly in a rural community but with the ability also to engage with the wide variety of people who pass through the retreat centres.
A delightful four bedroom house has been made available through the Ashburnham Estate.Full details and an application form are obtainable from the diocesan website.
Informal enquiries may be made to the Archdeacon of Hastings, The Ven Dr Edward Dowler, [email protected].
Some thoughts for the Year of the Bible
How we see things is an important part of our attitude to life. When Christopher Wren went round St Paul’s Cathedral while it was being built, he came across a man mixing cement. He asked the man, “What are you doing?” The man had no idea that Wren was the architect, and he replied, “I’m building a great cathedral.”
2017 has been designated the Year of the Bible in the Diocese of Chichester. The American Old Testament scholar, Walter Brueggemann has said that it is strange that the Bible is the most treasured book in the world for Christians, and yet it seems so difficult that most Christians don’t even bother to read it. They only hear passages from it read during church services and listen to sermons preached about it.
Walter Brueggemann also suggests that the Bible is precious to Christians because it offers us a way of understanding the world in a fresh perspective that leads to life. The Bible shows us an alternative way of understanding the world. It challenges our ordinary human ways of understanding ourselves. It invites us to look at life in a way which helps us to be open to the hurts and disappointments which come our way, as well as the surprises of healing and new life which we can experience. It enables us to be people who see our glass as half full rather than half empty – two very different ways of looking at the same thing.
All this makes the Bible difficult to read and understand, because it does not fit readily with our human ways of looking at the world. God’s ways are not our ways, so it is not surprising that God’s book, the Bible, shows us a different approach to life from our instinctively human ways of looking at life.
I hope that these thoughts from a sermon which I preached at Penhurst earlier in the year will encourage some of you to turn again to the Bible and to try to understand what God is saying to us through his Word.
With all good wishes

Parish Council News
Behind the scenes . . .In the back office the last couple of months have been busy ones. The end of the financial year every 31st March triggers a set of year end roll over actions. After the internal audit in April the Parish Council meeting on 16th May was the Annual Meeting the timing and business of which is prescribed by law. Cllr Nicky Bishop was re-‐elected as Chair person for the next 12 months and Cllr Richard Hann was re-‐elected Vice Chairman. This rhythm of the council year continues with posting of last year’s financial data to the web site by July. Then, November will see the first look at the budget for 2018/19 with formal adoption of it and setting of the precept in January. And so the cycle continues.
. . . and in the community -‐ InternetIf you are unhappy with the speed of your internet connection are you prepared to put in some time to join a working party looking at options for improving it? There are a number of local solutions which attract funding and a group is being formed to explore the options. Email clerk@ashburnham-‐penhurst.net or call Brian on 01323 832082 to register your interest.BT phone boxThe phone box at The Pound was purchased from BT for one pound! The draft is available on the parish web site so please take a look and send your suggestions by email to [email protected].
Date of next meeting Council meeting: Wednesday 12 July 2017 at 7.30 pm in the Sports Pavilion. Please see the parish website for up to date information.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend these meetings and there is an agenda slot near the start of the meeting for members of the public to address the Council.

Sometimes we face particular crises in our lives and we need help and support. As a Church St Peter’s seeks to reflect the healing compassion of Christ, and through our Pastoral Care team we aim to provide comfort and support, to those who are sick in hospital or at home, or recently bereaved, or who are isolated through a lack of mobility or old age, during times of physical, emotional or spiritual need. We can offer contact with a member of our pastoral team who can visit, as well offering prayer, home Holy Communion or hospital visiting if required.
We firmly believe that prayer does have an effect, and we welcome requests for prayer. We have two prayer points – one outside under the main Welcome notice at the foot of the church pathway and the other inside the church entrance door. There are cards and pens available for use. You are also welcome to contact a member of the pastoral team direct. Requests will be prayed for on a regular basis and held in strict confidence.

News from Ashburnham Place
Happy summer greetings from us all at Ashburnham Place. We wanted to let our neighbours know about the Summer ahead here at
Ashburnham Place. As usual we have a few very busy points during July and August where the site will be closed completely. The dates this year are Saturday
15th July -‐ Saturday 12th August and the bank holiday weekend 26th -‐ 28th August. We are sorry that this is a large chunk of the holidays when the Tea Room and the Grounds and Gardens are closed but it is these large exclusive groups that help us stay open for the rest of the year. We hope you all have a warm and restful summer and we look forward to seeing many of you around
and about Ashburnham and Penhurst.Paul Wenham
Green fairways and flashing irons!
The ninth annual MI golf tournament (coined “The Sedlescombe Divot Fest” by one of our esteemed number!) took place last month and was, once again, a great source of mirth and bonhomie. One day grandchildren will sit at our feet and listen to "tales of derring-‐do" and marvel at the stories of gung-‐ho men wielding their seven irons as they thrashed their balls out of the Sussex undergrowth! At times the golf was exquisite; there was the nearest the hole winner Ollie Phillips planting his ball just feet away from the ninth pin -‐ the first time in a number of years any of us have actually got the ball on the green -‐ let alone near the pin! There was also the remarkably tidy card of Richard King (Ron jr.) and Steve Worobec who completed each hole in either 4 or 5. The winners were the scratch pairing who no -‐ one saw winning! Nick Heasman, well known for his exploits in Ashburnham Place and Brian Holdstock, well known locally for many talents but least of all for golf, completed the nine holes in a highly commendable 40 thrashes of the ball.As all 20 competitors circled the last green it was left to yours truly to sink the final putt (the only one I did all morning!) and close the curtains on another memorable event. Watch out for the photographs. You’ll see them locally first before they hit Golf Monthly!
Breaking News…... Unexpectedly, as we were told that we would be contacted in 2018, the marvellous people at the Harvey’s Brewery in Lewes have told us we can visit on 2 November. If you would like to join us then that might still be possible, so do let me know ([email protected]). As we invited moustached women to join us last time I think that we can make this a tradition and open it up to all again. After all, the letter was addressed to me as Secretary of the Penhurst and Ashburnham WI!!Don’t forget our monthly meetings, 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Ash Tree InnRichard
July and August are busy months at the Retreat Centre. We do have some Quiet Days in July that have some spaces s0ll available. On Tuesday 18th Roy Calthorpe is leading a drawing workshop, then on Wednesday 19th, Pen Wilcock is here to lead a day en0tled, ‘The Cost of Living’, addressing issues such as hyper-‐sensi0vity and low energy. The day will explore the value of silence and simplicity as sources of calm. On Saturday 22nd Judy Canaan is leading a retreat called ‘The Secret Garden’, a chance to step aside and seek God. Both of these days are led by very experienced and preay wonderful retreat leaders. If you are interested in coming on any of these, give us a ring in the office. Don’t forget, magazine readers get a ½ price offer, the days cost between £25 & £34 full price.
We’re not holding an Open Day this year, we love having them, but it is a lot of work in a busy season so we have decided to hold our Open Day every other year. You can put the next one in your diary if you like-‐ Saturday 1st September 2018.
We hope you all have a lovely summer, Richard & Storm.

July Diary Ron’s Ramblings
At the risk of sounding like a geriatric hypochondriac, I’m told that my hearing is going now. The person telling me this is, of course, Helen. She cannot understand how I fail to hear instructions from three rooms away. With the doors closed, me operating a soup blender and listening to Jimi Hendrix in full flow into the solo in ‘Voodoo Child’! This is followed by the immortal phrase, ‘You never hear a word I say’. Sound familiar, chaps ?This all came about, when she read a headline out from a newspaper. It was‘Speeding Seagulls risk fines’. I immediately conjured up an image of a member of the local constabulary, on the seafront at Bexhill, aiming a radar gun at a passing Larus ( just showing off, cos I know the Latin name for Gulls ) and yelling, ‘OK, sunshine, you’re nicked‘. The headline in question, was in fact, ‘Feeding Seagulls risk fines!’ Easy mistake to make.............
My time, in the Radiotherapy tunnel of doom, at Brighton Hospital has come to an end. All in all it hasn’t been a bad experience. The NHS comes in for more than its fair share of bad publicity, but I cannot praise the staff at Preston Park highly enough. In fact everyone, from my GP to the staff at the Conquest , Eastbourne and Br ighton hosp i ta ls , have been absolutely marvellous and I think we should be proud of our health system in the UK. It has its faults, but doesn’t every large organisation ?The one thing I shan’t miss, is the drive to and from Brighton every day. I will miss, seeing the ‘Gentleman of the Road’ in Preston Park, with his head in a rubbish bin searching for food to feed the Gulls and surrounded by a couple of hundred of the birds -‐ with two sitting on his shoulder! They’d given up speeding for the day.........

Apologies if the magazine is dropping through your letter box a bit later than usual. Your editor is currently studying for a masters in horticulture and had a rather important dissertation to submit in June which left very little time for
anything else, including putting the magazine together! By the time of the next magazine in September the course will be over
so normal service will be resumed! Thanks for your patience. Jay.
