TheBurlingtonNorthernboughtGP39-2sin1981,andtheseenginesprovedtobethefinalnailinthecoffinforthelastremainingF-unitsonthesystem.ThephaseIIbunitsweresimilartotheSantaFeenginesabove;themostobviousdifferencebeingtheadditionofQfansandexhaustsilencers.OtherBN-specifiedoptionsincludedlargeall-weatherwindows,latchedbatteryboxdoors,andMUhoseretainersontherearpilots.In1989,BNbeganrepaintingenginesinthenew“WhiteFace”scheme,asdepictedonBN2702&2716.AnAmericanflag,asproudlydepictedonBN2716,wasalsoappliedtosomeunitsatthistime-therailroad’swayofshowingsupportforthetroopsinvolvedinDesertStorm.

PROTOTYPE INFO: Inthedecadebetween1974and1984,EMDproducedtheGP39-2forsevenNorthAmericanrailroads.Thebasicdesignfollowedmostfouraxleroaddieselswitchersforthetime.BorrowingimprovementsfromtheGP38-2andGP40-2designs,thismid-horsepowerroadswitcherutilizedaturbocharged12-cylinderEMD645E3dieselengineforit’sprimemover.With4fewercylinders,thesmallerengineprovidedadistinctivelonghoodonthephaseIIandphaseIIIbodies,wherethecleanroom/enginecompartmentdoorsweresetbackfromthecabfurtherthanpredecessorlocomotives.
