WHAT IS
UNIX is a computer operating system, controlprogram that works with users to run programs, manage resources, and communicate with other
computer system.
It is a set of enabling technologies first developed atAT&T that have been incorporated into several legallydistinct but closely related operating systems, each of
which can be considered to be a UNIX system. If itlooks like UNIX, operates like UNIX, runs commonUNIX utilities and programs, and is developed with
UNIX as a model, its UNIX.

THE HISTORY OF UNIX1969 The Beginning
The history of UNIX starts back in 1969, when Ken Thompson,DennisRitchie and others started working on the little-used PDP-7 in a corner at
Bell Labs and what was to become UNIX.

THE HISTORY OF UNIX
In the late 1980's through early 1990's : the``wars'' between these two major strains raged. Aftermany years each variant adopted many of the key
features of the other. Commercially, System V wonthe``standards wars'' (getting most of its interfacesinto the formal standards), and most hardware vendorsswitched to AT&T's System V.
The result was many different versions of Unix, allbased on the original seventh edition.

Multitasking
UNIX lets a computer do several thingsat once, such as printing out one filewhile the user edits another file. This isa major feature for users, since usersdon't have to wait for one application to
end before starting another one.

Multiusers
The computer can take the commands of anumber of usersdetermined by the design of
the computerto run programs, access files, and print documents at the same time.
lets several users access the same documentby compartmentalizing the document so that
the changes of one user don't override thechanges of another user.

System portability
UNIX permit to be moved from one brand ofcomputer to another with minimum of codechanges
the operating system could be upgradedwithout having all the customer's datainputted again. And new versions of UNIXwere backward compatible with older
versions, making it easier for companies toupgrade in an orderly manner.

Unix Program
Unix comes with hundreds of programs thatcan divided into two classes:
Integral utilities that are absolutely necessary
for the operation of the computer such as thecommand interpreter, and Tools that aren'tnecessary for the operation of UNIX butprovide the user with additional capabilities, such as typesetting capabilities and e-mail.

Applications libraries
there are hundreds of Unix applications thatcan be purchased from third-party vendors, inaddition to the applications that come with
Unix.

How UNIX is organized
The UNIX system is functionally organized atthree levels:
The kernel, which schedules tasks and
manages storage;The shell, which connects and interprets users'commands, calls programs from memory, andexecutes them;
The tools and applications that offeradditional functionality to the operatingsystem
