History of Computer
Wyatt Feiling
Did you know...
• The first idea for a computer was in the early 1800s• Charles Babbage is the man who is credited with this idea.
Important Parts of Computer History
• Early Computational Devices• Early Computers• Generations & Main Component• Inventors/Developers• Internet
Early Computational Devices
• Abacus• Punched Cards
Abacus
• Early aid for mathematical computations.
• Measures the speed of a computer
Punched Cards
• Early form of input devices.• Enabled computers to do tasks.
Early Computers
• ENIAC• Mark1• EDSAC• EDVAC• UNIVAC
ENIAC
• (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer)
• The first general use computer.
Mark1
• Electro-mechanical computer• Used for storage
EDSAC
• (Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator)
• Second practical stored-program electronic computer.
EDVAC
• (Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer)
• One of the earliest computers.
UNIVAC
• (Universal Automatic Computer)• First commercial computer produced
in US.
Generations of Computers
• First Generation• Second Generation• Third Generation• Fourth Generation• Fifth Generation• Generation Worksheet
First Generation
• Vacuum tubes were used for circuitry.
• Magnetic drums were used for memory.
• The size of the early computers took up an entire room
Second Generation
• Transistors replaced vacuum tubes.• Were now smaller, faster, and more
efficient.
Third Generation
• Semiconductors replaced transistors.• Computers now increased in speed
and efficiency.• Devices could run multiple apps at a time.
Fourth Generation
• Currently used• Integrated circuits were equipped
within a single chip.• Instead of an entire room, it can now fit in someone’s hand.
Fifth Generation
• Still in development• Will use parallel processing and
superconductors to create artificial intelligence.
• These new devices will be capable of learning.
Inventors/Developers
• Steven Jobs & Steven Wozniak• Bill Gates & Paul Allen• Charles Babbage• Herman Hollerith• Blaise Pascal• John Von Neumann• Presper Eckerty & John Mauchly
Steven Jobs & Steven Wozniak
• Creators of Apple Inc.• Released first Apple computer (Apple
I) on April 1, 1976
=
Bill Gates & Paul Allen
• Creators of Microsoft/Windows.• First Microsoft computer (Windows
1.0) is announced November 20, 1985.
=
Charles Babbage
• Father of Computing• Originated the concept of a
programmable computer.
Herman Hollerith
• The founder of IBM• Created and used punched cards.
Blaise Pascal
• Famous mathematician & physician• Created a machine that
automatically adds and subtracts.
John Von Neumann
• Famous American mathematician that contributed to the development of computers.
• Developed a software written in binary code.
Presper Eckert & John Mauchly
• Created the first all electronic computer, the ENIAC
• Formed EMCC to build new computer designs for commercial and military applications.
Internet
• Birth of the Net• Mosaic Browser• Worldwide Web• ARPANET
Birth of the Net
• Invented in 1969• Created a computer network that
would continue to function in the event
of a disaster.
Mosaic Browser
• World’s first web browser• Created by Marc Andreesen
=
Worldwide Web
• World’s first communicating system• Created by Tim Berners-Lee
=
ARPANET
• Later changed to the Internet• Created by the Department of
Defense.
All in All
• Without these people and the developments they contributed, we would not be any where near close
to the computers we have now.
