Heat Transfer Notes

A.  Solid

B.  Melting point

C.  Liquid

D.  Boiling point

E.  Gas

DYK?   Heat moves from areas of high heat to areas of low heat (hot to cold).

Heat is transferred in three different ways.

1.  Conduction  direct contact.

Example  a pan on a stove burner.

2.  Convection  heat transfer through liquids and gases.

Example:  Wind

3.   Radiation  transfer through electromagnetic waves.

Example:  sun light

Checkpoint  What heat transfer method is this?

Add a paragraph

You will write a short paragraph explaining conduction, convection and radiation.

Raise your hand when done.

For the word search, use page 23, Forms of Energy.

Heat Transfer Applications• Heat Engine  converts thermal energy

into mechanical energy.> Example:  the gasoline engine of a car.

Systems that Transfer Heat• Heat Pump  transfers heat from outside

to inside a building in winter.> Really a heat engine in reverse.

• Geothermal  Energy from inside the Earth.> Can be used to heat homes, cook, and

generate electricity.• Refrigerator  transfers heat away from

food to keep it cool.

Controlling Heat Transfer

Thermostat  a thermometer attached to a switch.

automatically turns on and off the heat transfer device.
