Women’s World Day of Prayer - Friday 2nd March 2018 St. ar ’s Church enha 1 .3 a ll Saints Church lco e p
All God’s Creation is Very Good!
The interdenominational movement of the Women’s Day of Prayer invites everyone to attend one of over 5,000 services being held on Friday 2nd March with the title “All God’s Creation is Very Good!”. We will join an estimated 3 million people around the world that day in a service which has been written this year by the women of Suriname in South America.
StartinginSamoaasthesunrises, andendingasthesunsetsoffthecoastof American Samoa, the service will have been translated into more than 95 languages and 1000 dialects as we are reminded that we haveresponsibilities in caring for this wonderful world we live in. With its vast rainforest and wealth of resources, Suriname asks us to pray forconservation and the protection of wildlife, through an awareness ofpollution, misuse, and abuse, as well as for the situation in Suriname and concerns for the future. This is not simply a day of prayer for women, but for everyone who cares about our world and those who live in it, so please come along, and join us on Friday 2nd March.

I will not be about for a couple of months or so now depending how the surgery on my wrist goes (and then the other one to follow!). Not looking forward to the procedure but hopefully the end result will be worth it.
So a big welcome and thank you to Amanda Ward who has bravely volunteered to take on the April editon of Network. We still need new volunteers please for future editions as not sure how long I will be out of action.
Please also email lots of articles, photographs, recipes etc for whoever is editing to consider and keep the magazine full of what our lovely village is about, thank you.

Pantomime Report- Beauty and the Beast
On Friday 19th and Saturday 20th January 2018, HAMS performed their second pantomime to packed houses at Lenham Community Centre. Over six hundred people came along to watch the show. This year’s production was eautyandthe eastandwasafun filledshowforallthefamily, fullofmusic, dancing, audience participation and traditional pantomime humour. The show began with a handsome Prince, played by Craig Hills, being transformed into a hideous Beast by the evil enchantress Fiona, played by Lucy Moore.
Book-loving Beauty was played by Kelly Hébert, a native French-speaker whoislivingandworkinginHarrietshamasanaupair.Thiswasherfirstactingroleandherfirsteverpantomime, allthemoreremarkableasshedidn’t speak English at all just a year ago. Beauty was taken prisoner by, and later fell in love with The Beast, played by Andrew Rogers, whosurvived three performances wearing a very warm mask. The audience gaspedwhenthesetwofinallyhadtheirfirstdancewith eautywearingaresplendent yellow dress.
Beauty was aided and assisted in the Castle by Dame Patty Potty, played by David Penny, and her son Chip, played by Daniel Barton. These two were the cause of some riotous humour in the Castle kitchen and Patty’s dressesgrewever more amboyantasthestoryunfolded.

opp ppeal 2 1Firstly, it is only right that I publicly thank my little team of helpers, organised via the History Society, who came to my aid and helped in 2017. Assisting with making up all the poppy boxes, getting them out to collectors and businesses, collected them all back in, then helped me counting the money – you know who you are and “thank you”.
With all cheques now banked the total raised from Harrietsham for The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2017 was £2,388.30, so well doneeveryone.
So, this brings me to a hard decision. I have now been the local organiser for 15 years and for a number of reasons it is time to retire. As 2018 is the last year of the First World War Centenary I plan to see things through this year, hopefully with the assistance of my new band of helpers. But after this yearIwillo ciallystanddown, soifthereisanyoneouttherewhowouldlike to take on the role of Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal Organiser, please contact me and I can explain what is involved.
Unfortunately, if no one comes forward I have to let you all know that there will not be a collection in Harrietsham after 2018.

onprofit workingforthebeesHobbyistI Currently run 24 hives across Northdowns and within the pubic house Ringlestone, private homes, and local farmland. I mentor other beekeepers, look to improve my skills, continue to learn and now breeding my own queens, having hives that are also moved around for pollination throughout the season for local farms, and pollination of rape seed andorchards etc. At the end of last season August, sadly one Apiary was broken into by thieves. I had stolen 2 large hives in WBC boxes and a new smallnucleusbo fromaprobableswarmcollectedlocally.SoifofferedaBee hive, please check where they came from, or marked inside with my name or postcode.
Helpnowneeded,Iamlookingforsomebodythatmayhaveasmallfield, apiece of land, large garden, an area of scrub, edge of woodland, that could be put to use but easily approachable. They would need to be happy for me to use and access on a weekly basis for hive checks, disease treatment, Queen raising, etc. Long term if possible, in return for as much honey as you would like if available, as well as being mentored if you are keen to learn and have your own hive.
Our honey bees as I am sure many are aware are really struggling and need as much support as possible to beat the insecticides, infections offungal viral and bacterial diseases as well as mite, wasp, & hornet attack. We need to do as much as we can to help, even leaving their mostimportantbeneficial,Dandelions,Daisiesandwild owerstogrow.Theseason starts for them from now with awaiting hazel, Pussywillow,Snowdrops. In return they will expand and grow to pollinate fruit andvegetables, hence a most important little insect and part of our ecosystem.
One of the things about honeybees is the fact that they are important. Important at the human scale – not just important to beekeepers, or me but importanttothe ualityoflifeen oyedbybeneficiariesofdevelopedeconomies the world over. This importance does not hang on honeyproduction, but pollination – nothing less than our food supply. Please help if possible for 1 to a dozen hives, securable and with my weekly access in Harrietsham. Horse Safety - in Harrietsham and surrounding areasHavingriddenaroundHarrietshamforthepast20years,Ifindthatdriversare becoming increasingly impatient causing some near misses with me. I don’t think that drivers realise that animals are not machines and can make unpredictable moves, no matter how experienced the rider. They should be treated as a potential hazard and look out for riders signals, heed themgiving plenty of room when passing and not make sudden noises liketooting their horns or revving the engine. The highway code Rules 214 and 215 lay this out clearly.
One of the reasons we are riding more on the roads is the state of thebyways and bridal paths that have been ruined by motorbikes and four wheel drives, e.g Pilgrims Way. These are not being maintained because of cuts in the budgets. Our horses are unable to use them, especially when theweatheriswet.Myhorsehasoverthelast3yearssuffered2seriousin uriesbecauseoftheseconditions.Alsofarmersarehavingtocloseofftheirridesbecauseof ytippers, whichisunderstandable, againthisrestricts the amount of cross county we can do. I am sure some of this is also true of walkers and I would encourage others to report these bad and dangerous sections to Kent Highways and we may get some repairsscheduled.
Despite my moan I would like to thank all the drivers that do respect us and treat us with courtesy and respect, which I am glad to say is most drivers.
Rule 214:Animals. When passing animals, drive slowly. Give them plenty of room and be ready to stop. Do not scare animals by sounding your horn, revving your engine or accelerating rapidly once you have passed them. Look out foranimals being led, driven or ridden on the road and take extra care. Keep your speed down at bends and on narrow country roads. If a road is blockedbyaherdofanimals, stopandswitchoffyourengineuntiltheyhave left the road. Watch out for animals on unfenced roads.
Rule 215Horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles. Be particularly careful of horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles especially when overtaking. Always pass wide and slowly. Horse riders are often children, so take extra care and rememberridersmayrideindoublefilewhenescortingayoungorinexperienced horse or rider. Look out for horse riders’ and horse drivers’ signals and heed a request to slow down or stop. Take great care and treat all horses as a potential hazard.

Fish Scheme AGM The Annual General Meeting of the Fish Scheme will be held on Wednesday 21st March 2018 in
the Booth Hall, Harrietsham Village Hall.7.00pm for 7 .30pm
All Welcome
Fish Scheme. 2018 will see the 50th Anniversary of the formation of the Fish Scheme in the village, this was started by a group of volunteers to provide help to those in need with transport to doctor’s surgeries and to local hospitals and other essential journeys. The Fish Scheme is run by a small committee and unfortunately our current minutes secretary will be leaving us following our AGM in March so we are looking for someone else to fill this roll. If you interested please contact Peter Brown 851075 to discuss. In January 1970 the Fish Scheme produced the first copy of the Network Magazine, which can be seen on the Archive page of the website: harrietshamfishscheme.org The Fish Scheme organises a range of activities and events including a monthly matinée film show and elevenses group and relies on the support of many volunteers with a variety of skills. The Network Magazine is currently delivered free with the help of some of the volunteers, to all residents and businesses in the Parish and with the ever increasing population is in need of additional help to be able to continue with this. If you have some spare time and think you may be able to assist us in any way please contact Marjorie Darby to discuss on 850657 or email [email protected]

withscratchteamsduetothe winterbug ,althoughweplayedwellwelostby 29 to 57 shots. On the 15th we went to Burham and were very pleased to draw against a strong side 56 -56.
On Tuesday the 16th we went to Woodpeckers, again a strong side with many County Players. We enjoyed the game but lost by 38-48 shots.Ditton (Outdoor) were our hosts on the 23rd. They have really short mats 40ft. against our 45ft (both are legal) and we just could not get used to them losing by 28-44 shots. We await their visit in February and maybe get our own back.
On 25th - yes we have been busy and Tunstall came to us, a very friendly club and this time we won by 66-39 shots. No doubt they will seek toreverse this when we visit them in February.

My thanks to the members who came to the workshop meeting in January, which enabled us to sort out another half a dozen boxes of things we have collected for our Archives. There is still a lot more to do so if you have any spare time to help with this please let me know.

Gardening Tips for MarchSpringseemstobeherewiththedaffodilsshootingupandsnowdropbulbsandcyclamencormsallnowinfull ower.Frostscanstillbeaha ardsokeep protecting vulnerable plants during cold spells. Easter is at the end of March this year so Garden Centres and DIY stores will be packed withtender summer plants for your garden. Don’t be tempted as the weather can remain cold for another month yet.
In the vegetable garden many vegetable crops can be sown this month, broad beans, carrots, lettuces, spinach, salad leaves, leeks and chard, fresh home grown food all summer. With the lawn it is time to neaten the edges with a half-moon edging iron and remove the molehills and worm casts that have appeared over the last few months. Moss in the lawn can be a real problem this month, so rake out as much as you can. Reseed any bare areas and when the weather is a little drier carry out a light roll to settle the surface. Towards the end of the month you can apply a weed and feed to the grass areas.
Now is the time to mark out those new beds, prepare the ground byremovingtheweeds, incorporateorganicmatterandofftothegardencentre to pick out some new plants. Remember when looking around at the garden centre to pick out plants that will give you a succession of interest anddon t ustpickoutallthe oweringplants. oucanmulchthebedswithbark to save watering next summer and cut down on the weeding.

Harrietsham Gardening SocietyOn 16th January, Harrietsham Gardening Society held its Annual General Meeting. David Oversby was elected Chairman, Shirl Wood as Secretary and Stephen Morris as Treasurer. Angela Gatland, Kevin Harlock, George Evans and Georgina Hilton all agreed to stay on the committee for another year. Peter Brown had decided before the AGM that he wanted to step down from the committee to allow him to concentrate on 2018 events for the History Society and the 50th anniversary of the Fish Scheme. TheGardening Society would like to thank Peter for all of his input on thecommittee over many years. His contribution will be missed. Following the AGM, we had a talk by Hilary Newman titled the “Lazy Gardener”illustrating a variety of plants that provided seasonal interest whilstbenefitingthegardenownerbybeinglowmaintenance.

which was our AGM. The meeting gave us the opportunity to look back over the year and thank all the people who had helped with the various activities of the group during this time. These included Barbara Kelly and Pat Warlow who retired from the committee and Brenda Hill who had made our entry for the Scarecrow competition. This business part is always relatively short and gave us the chance to socialise afterwards.
Our meeting in February will be our annual Auction where our members bring in small items for sale. The money always goes to our chosen charity – last year this was split between the JPK Foundation and the Oliver Fisher Premature Baby Unit.
This year we are going to welcome Karen di Marco as our speaker in March. She and her husband set up the GamBLE Charity which sponsors the Yalding School Farato in rural Gambia. The money that the charity raises helps to improve the quality of education provided to the children of this part of Gambia. It pays for new buildings, including a nursery, teacher training and teaching materials. Trustees of the charity visit Gambia every year.
We are happy to welcome new members to the group where all women are welcome – contact details are in the Local Directory pages of the Network

March 2018Christian MessageBy the time you read this, Easter will be approaching, bulbs will be blooming everywhere, you may have booked your summer holidays, and many of you will have already sneakily eaten a chocolate egg!
In all of this there’s a sense of optimism, of hope for the future, of having thrownoffthedarknessthatseemstodescendintheearlyyearandofhope. And of course, Easter is what hope is all about. Christians believe that alone in history, Jesus has overcome death-and if you think about it, that saprettysignificantclaim. uttheyalsobelievethattheeternalandabundant life that the Bible talks about starts NOW-not when we die.
Of course, abundant life now doesn’t mean we are all living in a happybubble where nothing goes wrong. Some of the most joyful Christians I know struggle with huge issues - as I write I can think of redundancy, bereavement and cancer as three things that three of the liveliestChristians I can think of are facing. It’s more that these three folk have an innerstrengththatcarriesthemthroughthosedi cultplaces, whentheyareup but also when they are down. What I really mean is a person to go to who loves them, gives them strength, listens when they laugh and weep.
That person is Jesus - the one who showed us the nature of a God who loves us.
If you feel hope with emerging Spring or if you are struggling with the cards lifehasdealtyou orboth myprayeristhatyouwillfind odwithyou onyourside.IfyoustruggletofindHim,comeandtalktome,orMillie, oranybody in any Christian church, and ask them to help. Easter blessings be with you!

Country Ways Q uilters and StitchersWe were a bit slow getting into the Sashico evening bags so the LeMoyne Star block that was scheduled for February didn’t happen. That’s okay it’s all about having fun so we are pushing things back to give everyonetime to complete their projects.
So in March we will be making a LeMoyne Star quilt block that has a crazy quilt kind of feel. Well we may, or may not? So turn out your fabric scraps and 1/2yd of muslin and come prepared to play. If you like you can just bring your knitting and watch those who are playing. It beats sitting at home alone.
I hope to see you all. We will be in the Lenham Community Centre on March 6th and 21st. We meet in the Osbourne room at 1:30.
If you would like more information please contact Pamela Gillard at01233-879507 or e-mail [email protected]

At January’s meeting, members enjoyed making various types of Dorset button – beginners did the basic cross wheel button – whilst those that had already made them at one of our previous meetings tried the tree or posy version. February’s project was embroidery on card. Some members made a beaded wisteria greetings card whilst others stitched a lovebirds design for Valentine’s Day.
The project for the March meeting on Saturday 3rd March in the Booth Hall will be Japanese temari balls. These are traditional thread balls at one time used as toys but, nowadays, used as ornaments. We will not be using a polystyreneballasthebasebutwewillmakeitthetraditionalwaybyfirstcreating our mari (ball base) and we will make a little bell box to go inside to which we will add things like a bell, a coin for wealth, and a message could be put inside e.g. “Get Well Soon” etc.. We will then divide the ballgeometricallytofindthenorthpole, southpoleande uator obi whichisthe same name used for a sash that goes around a kimono. The ball is then divided into however many divisions (jiwari) are needed for the particular design and all lines are marked with thread (often metallic). Then comes the fun part when we will be embellishing our maris to make them into temaris which is done by wrapping with threads, embroidering with threads or a combination of the two. As this is a more complicated project and will take longer to complete, we have yet to decided if we will do it in one longersession on the 3rd or complete it over two sessions (March and April).Members will be informed by email or on our Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/pg/harrietshamcraftandchat/posts/? ref= page_ internal once the decision has been made and they will also be given information as to what they will need to bring with them to make the temari balls.

Easter blessings be with you!

which was our AGM.

Please help if possible for 1 to a dozen hives, securable and with my weekly access in Harrietsham. opp ppeal 2 1Firstly, it is only right that I publicly thank my little team of helpers, organised via the History Society, who came to my aid and helped in 2017.

Beauty’s father Maurice was a bumbling inventor played by AndrewRobinson. Maurice invited children from the audience to join him on stage to help with his latest invention, his Balloonamatic 2. The Beast’s rival was the handsome and arrogant Gaston, the village brawn, played by Josh Manktelow, withhislong sufferingsidekick,FrenchFrank, playedbyKarlFlood. Fiona’s scatty sidekick Snot Rag, played by Margaret Fitzgerald, tried to emulate her charms. The Castle servants and towns folk added colour and dance to the scenes and were played by Abbi Attaway, Briony Chaplain-Mabbutt, Olivia Davies, Margaret Fitzgerald, Kim Frazer, Craig Hills, hrissie eeand arolMansfield.
During the course of the show, audiences were entertained by dancingilluminatedstickfigures puppets aDameonascooter plentyofmusicanddancing and a skeleton, played by Briony Chaplain-Mabbutt, frightening other cast members during the song She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain. oorFrankevenhadaface fullof ourandacustardpieinhisfaceduring

The pantomime was directed by Kim Frazer who also directed Cinderella last year. Rodney Bridges was the musical director and played all the music live on his keyboard. The pantomime choreographer was Briony Chaplin-Mabbutt. The scenery and props were built by Ron Frazer who also acted as Stage Manager.
