Gettysburg Campus Update
Message from the Campus Vice President
As I prepare to turn the calendar to November and thoughts of Thanksgiving, I thought it would be a good time
to express my gratitude and highlight some activities, events and accomplishments that have occurred this se-
mester that focus on creating connections with our students and each other to foster success:
20 staff and 5 students attended the Latino List Brown Bag sessions for a unique glimpse into the vibrant
culture of Hispanic America through a series of highly personal portraits of Latinos who have richly con-
tributed to the fabric of our society. Thank you to Wendy Brubaker and Cynthia Garcia for facilitating
discussion after each session.
Facilitated study groups for every section of Biology
121. A new opportunity for students to review course
materials, connect with peers, and test with confidence.
Thank you to biology faculty Joel Bacon, Ruth Negley,
Carter Stephen and Gina Xenos for their suppor t of
these study groups and to Amanda Hartzel and Kathy
Pasewark in the Learning Center for their adminis-
trative leadership and support. >
Professionalism Day for students. This event provid-
ed an opportunity for students to have their resume re-
viewed, receive headshots to create LinkedIn profiles,
participate in mock interview sessions, learn strategies to manage their social media and gain dress for
success tips about professional clothing. (See last page of the newsletter)
8 staff and faculty who formed the HACC
Yeah! Team to par ticipate in the Adams
County Heart Walk. The team consisting
of Judy Alder , Wendy Brubaker, Catherine
Frost, Jill Lott, Shannon Harvey, Rich
Hebel, Cinnamon Hosterman and Dory
Uhlman r aised $1,565.00 in suppor t of the
American Heart Association! Despite the
rain, the team enjoyed the opportunity to walk
together in support of physical activity, heart
healthy living and the HACC Yeah brand!
As you prepare to turn your attention to November and Thanksgiving, I hope you’ll take a minute to think
about all you’re grateful for. Research shows that gratitude can weaken depression, increase resilience, im-
prove physical health, boost self-esteem and increase long term happiness.
Who wouldn’t want all that! Thank you for all you do to support our students.
~ Shannon

HACC Gives Back
Did you know? Studies have shown that volunteering can improve your health,
boost your career and connect you to your community! Each month the Student Pro-
gramming Board sponsors a volun-
teer opportunity in our local community. Consider
joining HACC students and fellow faculty and staff for
a morning of fun and fellowship while working to help
those in need in our community. Check the November
calendar outside the Shaffer Breakroom for Novem-
ber’s volunteer activity.
Thank you to Wendy Brubaker and the Student Pro-
gramming Board for these great service learning
opportunities.

Nearly half of Adams County’s workforce commutes to jobs outside the county. Out of 38,519 Adams
County residents who are employed, there are 16,545 individuals with jobs in other counties, according to
Katie Lentz, director of strategic initiatives at the South Central Pennsylvania Workforce (SCPa Works) De-
velopment Board. Lentz was the keynote speaker along with other panelists at a recent workforce development
forum held at HACC to share workforce resources available to employers throughout the county.
Panelists included: Victor Rodgers, associate provost for workforce development at HACC; Frank Flamini,
administrative director at the Adams County Tech Prep program; Sam Primak, director of Pennsylvania Ca-
reerLink; and Jeanne Hare, Hanover branch manager at the Performance Group. Vic highlighted HACC’s
S.T.E.P Academy program which stands for Set Goals, Take Action, Expect Results and Put in the
Work. Students in the S.T.E.P. program are exposed to
pre-apprenticeship activities, career exploration, financial
literacy, company tours, mock job interviews and employ-
ment opportunities upon graduation. Additionally, students
who complete the program leave with a professional port-
folio that includes a resume, cover letter, thank you letter

Campus Nursing News
Salsa Lessons
October 2018
Gettysburg campus nursing director Jill Lott and nurs-
ing faculty Caren LaRue were awarded a grant through
the HACC Foundation to provide four senior-level nurs-
ing students the opportunity to attend a national confer-
ence to support their professional development as soon to
be practicing nurses. The conference, the 27th Annual
Convention of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses
(AMSN), was held at Disney’s Coronado Springs Lake
Buena Vista in Florida. The AMSN conference is the prem-
ier educational event for the med-surg specialty. The confer-
ence provided an opportunity for the students to enhance
their knowledge of clinical nursing at the bedside, leadership
and research. They also learned about expanding opportuni-
ties in care coordination, innovations by nursing colleagues
and practice breakthroughs. To be considered for selection
to attend, students had to have a GPA greater than 2.75
and be a member of Alpha Delta Nu.
Former HACC adjunct Anatomy and Physiology instructor Dr. Linda Neiswender and her husband
Frank Daire offered an evening of Salsa dance lessons in prepar ation for Gettysburg’s Eleventh Annual
Salsa on the Square event. The annual salsa event is in honor of National Hispanic Her itage Month and
Gettysburg’s sister-city rela-
tionship with León, Nicaragua.
The purpose of the Sister Cities
Program, which began in
1990, is to encourage cross-
cultural understanding and
to promote educational and
economic exchange between
the Borough of Gettysburg
and Leon, Nicaragua. There
are numerous exchanges of
people including students each
year, many traveling to Leon to
learn more about life in Nicara-
gua. http://www.gettysburg-
