WELCOME
Gunson historically has been renowned for its simple innovative products, that makes life easy for the automotive enthusiasts who seeks high performance and trouble free motoring.
More modern, sophisticated vehicles now require a differenttype of tool for identifying electronic problems and a new range of simple ingenious tools from Gunson allows the home mechanicand service engineer to access vital information withouthaving to spend a fortune. The range also includes robust tools for the professional mechanic that will withstand the daily pressure of the motor mechanic but at a price that is right.
Whilst most tool companies use a standard Lifetime Guaranteepromise, the small print usually limits it to faulty material ormanufacture. It does not cover misuse or wear and tear. The Tool Connection guarantee means what it says. Tools will be replaced if they are found to be defective and the company will always offer replacements or a repair if tools fail through normal use or if parts go missing.
The Tool Forum is a discussion environment for tool users and gives everyone the opportunity to have their say. Whether it’ssharing knowledge on a tool, asking other users for advice or justmaking a point - it’s open season and your opportunity to have a go.

DIAGNOSTICS
OBD
The system is so simple that retrieving vehicle faultcodes does not require particular skill. However, inorder to read these fault codes some equipment isnecessary. A Code Reader is used to instruct thevehicle's ECU to download fault codes and presentthem to the user on a display. The Code Readerwill activate that part of the On Board Diagnostic(OBD) programme which identifies the defectivecomponent and cause a code to be displayed
EOBD II
Only recently have there been moves to a standard 16 pin socket as used in the late 1990'sand compulsory with OBD II standard from year2001 onwards in Europe.
It is now mandatory for diesel and LPG engines to comply with this legislation and Gunson arecurrently developing a Fault Code Reader for these vehicles.
A full list of Fault Codes relevant to each Fault CodeReader is included in each kit and a full list of codesis available in the Auto Data Diagnostic TroubleCode manual available from the Tool Connection.
OBD I
Prior to 1995 vehicle manufacturers useda connector type unique to their own cars
FAULT CODE READERS
Modern vehicles have electronic control units (ECU)
that are able to identify faults and record these in a
memory. The system was first introduced on engine
management control units with electronic fuel
injection around 1986. It is now virtually universal to
all PETROL engine vehicles. This is a great benefit
to service personnel as it can considerably simplify
vehicle repair. The vehicle faults are stored in the
vehicle's ECU memory as FAULT CODES.

LAMBDA SYSTEM SENSOR
Modern engine management systems depend oncontinuous feedback to the electronic control unit(ECU) from an oxygen sensor, also known as aLambda Sensor. It is fitted to the exhaust system to ensure correct fuel injection control. This istermed CLOSED LOOP operation and it maintains aprecise exhaust oxygen level essential for vehiclesfitted with catalytic converters.
Without feedback of the correct Lambda sensoroutput, the system operates inefficiently in OPENLOOP with poor economy and performance, excessive levels of poisonous exhaust emissionsand with consequent damage to sensor andcatalytic convereer.. The Lambda System Testermeasures the sensor out with accuracy and highresolution, responding as rapidly as the petrolinjection ECU. It is suitable for exhaust gas oxygen(EGO) and also heated exhaust gas oxygen(HEGO) sensors.
The Clear visual display on a LED bargraph helps todetect discrepancies and pinpoint errors. Thismakes the Lambda System Tester suitable forprofessional and DIY use
Suitable for:
• All vehicles fitted with Catalytic Converters• Some high specification petrol injected
earlier engines
• Tests operation of Lambda Sensor• Tests ECU Fuel Injection Control System• Works off Vehicle's on-board battery• Avoids Catalytic Converter damage• On-board sensor testing

77028GLOW PLUG TESTER
For simple electrical tests on low volt DC systems
WARNINGThis Glow Plug Tester is only suitable for use on 12volt DC systems
Operation
1. Remove the common rail to the Glow Plugs and attach the positiveand negative lead to the battery
2. The Open Circuit LED will be displayed
3. Use the probe on the Glow Plug
4. The unit will go through a test procedure starting at Test 16A then 7Aand will give a reading of OK if the plug is working. If the plug is faultyit will display OPEN or SHORT denoting it has an open or short circuitand is a faulty plug.
5. It is good practice to test the Glow Plugs when cold as this simulatesthe cold start environment common to most diesels.
6. Do not test the Glow Plug if the BATT LOW LED is displayed as thisindicates the vehicle’s battery is well below 12 volts.
7. The test usually takes between 3 to 6 seconds depending on the typeof Glow Plug
8. If the test indicates OK remove the probe.
9. If the test stays on 16A or 7A the plug has failed the test andshould be replaced
10. Remove the probe.
Most cars today are fitted with low-maintenancebatteries which require almost no electrolyte topping upand in some cases, none at all.
This has been made possible by the inclusion of thelatest alternators which ensure that the battery in neversubjected to too high a charging voltage.
The charger used at home needs to be as sophisticatedas the car's alternator if you are to prolong rather thanshorten the battery life.
The problem with maintenance-free or sealed batteriesis gassing, where electrolyte is lost with too high acharge. Chargers designed to charge a maintenance-free battery are often called automatic and cut off thevoltage at between 13.8 and 14.5v to prevent gassing.
Some automatic chargers allow the charger to beconnected permanently to the battery, topping it upwhen necessary. This float charge is useful on a carthat is laid up for periods of time.
Added Value functions on Gunson battery chargersinclude: Internal cut-out for reverse polarity, good leadlengths and large, well insulated crocodile clips

The Valve Regulated Lead Acid Battery is sealed andmaintenance free with a Bunce Valve(s) in the top thatopens when a pre-set pressure is reached inside thebattery and excess gases are let out. The vlave thenresets itself.
A Gel battery is a lead-acid electric storage batterythat is sealed and completely maintenance free. Itcontains thixotropic gelled electrolyte that in non-spillable and uses a recombination reation to preventthe escape of hydrogen and oxygen gases (particularlyin deep cycle applications)
An AGM battery is a lead-acid electric storage batterythat is sealed and completely maintenance free like theGel battery but it has all of its electrolyte absorbed inseparators consisting of sponge like mass of mattedglass fibres. This battery should never be opened. Itis non-spillable and like the Gel battery will not let gasescape. Connections should be re-torqued and thebatteries cleaned periodically
This stands for Starting, Lighting and Ignition andspecifically designed for vehicles within a voltagecontrolled electrical system. Often called commercialbatteries they tend to be more robust and powerfuland used on large diesel motors.

CYLINDER LEAKAGE TESTER WITH LONG REACH ADAPTOR
One of the simplest tests for checking the condition of the engine is the cylinder leakage tester.
What it does
A cylinder head with the piston at the top deadcentre with both valves closed should be airtight.By injecting a measured amount of air into eachcylinder and checking the rate of leakage, thecondition of the sealed system can be identified.Regular compression checks are worthwhile toprevent expensive service and maintenance.
Compression leakage can result from:
• Damaged valves• Worn rings• Blown head gasgets• Cracked cylinder head
Long reach adaptors are particularly useful for deepseated plugs in Ford Zetec and Vauxhall/OpelEcotec engines.
Main advantage: You can determine enginecondition without striping down.

HI-GAUGE
HI-GAUGE is a compression tester that is a tool formeasuring and recording the pressure created bythe piston in each cylinder. This information is usedto diagnose faults in valves, pistons, piston rings, cylinder bores or head gaskets.
Such tests are an excellent guide to general enginecondition and can be used during routine engineservicing to give advance warning of developingproblems or for fault diagnosis.Improper compression can cause rough idling orrunning, backfiring and poor fuel economy.
Product Features
• Calibrated in Bar and Psi measurements• Suitable for petrol engines• Fits 14mm and 18mm spark plug ports• Flexi hose for easy fixing• Coloured bands compiled from manufacturer’s recommendations
NB It is normally accepted that a variation of 1 Bar(15psi) between any two cyclinders is an indicationof a fault.
Low compression pressures can be caused by:
Insufficient valve clearancesWorn piston rings or cylinder boresPoor valve seating or burnt valvesLeaking head gaskets
High compression can be caused by:
Excessive valve clearancesFluid (oil, petrol, water) in the engine or cylinder

CLIKADJUST-MICRO METER TAPPET ADJUSTER
Valve clearance is easy to adjust on all push rodengines or OHC engines with top adjustment.Clikadjust makes the job even easier and absolutely precise. This essential clearance adjustment ensures valves(both inlet and outlet) open and close correctlyresulting in better engine performance. An essential tool for worn tappets.
Too little clearance goes unnoticed until valves fail to close and compression and power are lost. This can burn valves causing costly replacements or even causing an engine fire.
Too great a clearance though not so dangerousresults in noise, lost performance anddriver irritation.
Suitable for:
• All push rod engines• All OHC engines with top adjustment• Inlet and Exhaust valves• All types of tappets including equal and non-equal• All types of threads• No need for feeler gauges
A tool that fits your vehicle’s adjustment nut willbe required.

MAINTENANCEWHEEL ALIGNMENT
TRAKRITE
Trakrite is the simplest, most accurate device forchecking the alignment of the steered wheels of carsand light commercials. It is a roller bearing platformover which one front wheel is slowly driven with thewheels in their straight ahead position.
Because of the roller bearings between the base andthe top plate of the Trakrite, any sideways stressbetween the tyre and the road surface will cause thetop plate to move sideways. This movement islinked to a pointer which shows if adjustment isneeded and in which direction.
How will it work?
It is not necessary to know the toe-in or toe-outangle needed for the vehicle. If the correct angle isset there is no sideways stress between wheel androad and the Trakrite will show this.
Suitable for the professional user, fleet operator orprivate motorist
For a small movement of the pointer (ie up to 4divisions, each division of the scale approximatelyequals one quarter of a degree Toe in/out error. Thepointer at its full movement indicates 3 degrees toein/out error. This relationship is correct for all wheelsizes.
NB It is important to note that Trakrite does notmeasure the actual Toe in/out angle, but measuresthe error in the Toe in/out setting. When the Toein/out is set correctly, there will be no movement ofthe pointer when Trakrite is used.
What it does
• Avoids tyre wear• Checks alignment on any level surface• Tests accurately in only 5 minutes• Easy and simple to operate with no technical
knowledge required• Virtually indestructible• Reveals Toe In or Toe Out
Just line it up, drive over for unmistakable results.
Suitable for the professional user, fleet operator orprivate motorist.

Modern vehicles have electronic control units (ECU)that are able to identify faults and record these in amemory. The system was first introduced on enginemanagement control units with electronic fuelinjection around 1986. It is now virtually universal toall PETROL engine vehicles. This is a great benefitto service personnel as it can considerably simplifyvehicle repair. The vehicle faults are stored in thevehicle's ECU memory as FAULT CODES
To reset these service indicator lights vehiclespecific reset tools are being introduced to themarket. Some fault code readers have their ownbuilt in reset procedures.

Colortune
COLORTUNE is a unique mixture setting device anda detector of other mixture related problems. It is asparking plug, which runs the engine like any normalsparking plug, but because it has a glass insulator, itallows the colour of the combustion flame, inside thecylinder, to show through it, thereby indicating thestrength of the mixture or other faults.
How will it work?
Understanding the principle by which Colortuneworks helps in getting the best results. Thatprinciple is commonly seen in action on paraffinheaters, gas cookers or anywhere a fuel is burnt inthe air to produce heat or energy.
Combustion at its most efficient produces aclear blue flame, various colours result ininefficient mixtures.
Inside an internal combustion engine those samecolours are present though not normally seen. WithColortune fitted, in place of a spark plug, the flameis visible through the glass insulator and the fuel isignited by a spark in the Colortune.
What it does?
Colortune provides a unique view of the behaviour ofthe fuel system, in the individual cylinders, oftensaving expense on costly fault diagnostics.COLORTUNE will set the mixture very accurately,if used correctly, avoiding most petrol wastage,
ensuring better performance and cleaning up theexhaust to a great extent.
What it fits?
COLORTUNE will fit most vehicles. The standardplug has a 14mm diameter plug thread just like mostsparking plugs. Adaptors to allow it to be fitted to allother vehicles, boats, motorcycles or even lawnmowers, are readily available to fit 18mm, 12mmand 10mm sizes.

Colortune will fit directly, with no adaptor required, to most current production cars sold in the UK with the exception of some large Fords which use a large sparkplug with an 18mm thread.
It will also fit Motorcycles with 2 stroke engines almost universally as there are no space restrictions caused by valves
It will also include most garden machinery and power plant engines
NB Colortune will fit directly with no adaptor required, cars such as Ford Escort and some Peugeot etc, which use 10mm plugs. These are slimline plugs which nevertheless have the normal 14mm plug thread. Some engines use taper seat plugs, but the standardColortune can be used with these simply by using the thick copper washer provided with the kit, avoiding the need for a taper adaptor.
COLORTUNE PLUS AN 18 MM ADAPTOR
With the 18mm adaptor the Colortune will fit large Fords,American and other foreign cars plus some classic cars.
COLORTUNE WITH A 10 MM OR 12 MM ADAPTOR

PERFORMANCE
CARBALANCER
Internal combustion engines use a mixture of air and petrol to generate their power. The performancetherefore is influenced by the air flowing into it and the petrol that is metered out by the carburettor.Unless the air flow in Twin or Multiple carburettors is correctly set, the correct mixture adjustment isunlikely to be achieved.
How it works
Carbalancer measures and indictates the air flowvery simply and accurately so that each carburettorthrottle butterfly can be synchronized to give thesame balanced air flow. Carbalancer with its unique micro metering head and easily read scaleindicates the air flow and allows accurate air throttle calibration.
Suitable for use on SU, Solex, Auto-Lite, (Formoco)Stromberg, Weber and Zenith and can be adjustedto fit most carburettors including side-draught,down-draught with air intakes (Venturi) from 25mmto 67mm (1-2”) diameter.
What will it do

FLASH TEST- VEHICLE HT IGNITION TESTER
Flashtest is designed as a simple but effectiveinstrument to test and measure the high tensionvoltage of a motor vehicle. Flashtest checks for a good spark, checks for good starting and evenrunning and is useful on any vehicle with anyignition system.
How it works
Detects faults in:
• Points• Coil• Distributor• Plug Leads• Rotor Arms
Checks for Flashtest:
• There is adequate high tension (HT) supplyto the spark plug
• The spark has deteriorated since a previous measurement
• Detect existing faul conditions which arecausing difficult starting, reduced engine power or increase fuel consumption
• To assess the HT voltage
The most common causes of low ignition voltage or missed sparks:
1. Faulty or incorrectly adjusted contact breaker points
2. Faulty HT leads3. Faulty capacitor (condenser)4. Faulty distributor cap or rotor arm5. Faulty ignition coil6. Faulty ballast resistor (if fitted)

PERFORMANCE
The Timing Light is an essential tool for engineswith adjustable timing (which is done by alteringthe position of the ignition distributor).
With electronic control of timing and advancefound on most modern engines, the roll of atiming light has been somewhat reduced to fault
diagnostics rather than adjustment.
All new timing lights are required to comply withCE regulations and therefore will have a Xenon lightinstead of the old Neon light. This Xenon lightprovides a brilliant blue/white light which can beseen in daylight or even the brightest of workshops.
The Purpose of Engine Timing
To make sure the spark in each cylinder, occursat the right instant for most efficient ignition of the
petrol and air, this varies enormously for differentoperating conditions. Even on the most up-to-datevehicles accurate ignition timing is an essentialrequirement. However many aspects of the timingrequirements of the engine are now take care ofby the engine management system.
How does a Timing Light work?
A bright flash of light occurs at the same time asthe ignition spark. This illuminates the timing pointerand mark on the rotating engine and freezes theimage for that instant. Just by looking at the timingmarks you can see the position of the engine whenthe spark occurs. Initial or basic timing is usuallydone at idle speed. At higher speed the sparkhappens earlier (timing is more advancedand the advance dial on some lights makes iteasier to test this accurately.
The dial seta a calibrated delay in the flashingof the tube until the user can see the timing markare aligned (as they were before the enginespeed was raised)

AC (ALTERNATING CURRENT)Current electricity generated mechanically, which changes direction at veryfrequent intervals. (See DIRECT CURRENT ).
ADVANCE DIALThis is the mechanism in some timing light which delays the flashing of the tube tocoincide with a particular timing mark which may not otherwise be visible, or it cancoincide with a new mark applied to meet a particular timing requirement.
AMPS (A)The electrical unit of current which represents the flow in an electrical circuit.
ADVANCE / RETARD MECHANISM A system to make the ignition spark happen earlier or later, to take account ofengine speed.
ANALOGUE / DIGITAL Sometimes the description of multimeter display, the former uses a pointer passingover a scale card and the latter uses a liquid crystal display (LCD). More widely, these names apply to the way electrical signals convey information, either bycontinuous wave or by chopped up binary codes.
AUTO POWER OFFThis automatically switches off a device to save the battery. On better multimeters there is a warning of this and the reading is retained.
AUTORANGINGAutomatic selection by a multimeter of the most efficient scale on which to displaya reading. In the case a tachometer (RPM) scale, sometimes it is split into clearersections and the multimeter skips back to the start of the next section as itreaches the top of the previous one.
BAR GRAPHA special scale divided into segments which indicate variations of a component'sperformance. In use it provides the advantages of an analogue display.
BASIC TIMINGThe underlying adjustment of the ignition and mechanical components of an enginewhich gets them to work together correctly.DC electricity. In vehicles the main type is called lead/acid. This name describesthe contents of a battery, which interact converting chemical energy intoelectricity. Although the lead/acid lasts for a long time if the battery is in use givingout its charge and being recharged, eventually they are used up and the batteryhas to be replaced.
CAM ANGLE (DWELL ANGLE) The distance round the cam on the shaft of a distributor which controls the timeduring which the contact breaker points, in conventional ignition systems remaintogether. The first term is used about motorcycles while in other vehicleell is usedand can be remembered as the period of distributor rotation during which thepoints are closed (or “are dwelling together”).
CARBURETTOR The traditional device for mixing air and petrrol in the correct or useful proportions.

GLOSSARY
CATALYTIC CONVERTER A device attached to the exhaust system through which the residual gases ofcombustion pass. These are broken down by it into harmless substances usingoxygen and a heated catalyst (or chemical stimulant, which assists the process, usually platinum).
CHARGING SYSTEMThe electrical system of a vehicle which produces current which can be stored in the battery.
CIRCUITThe path along which current electricity flows.
COCarbon Monoxide, a poisonous gas produced by combustion. The volumeproduced in a vehicle engine is directly proportional to the ratio of the petrol/airmixture. Vehicle manufacturers use it to indicate how an engine should beadjusted for peak performance. Governments use it to check how well oldervehicles are maintained.
CONDENSER (CAPACITOR)A device for storing or absorbing excess current in the circuit, e.g. in contactbreaker points to minimise arcing.

D.I.S. - (Distributor less Ignition System)An electronic alternative to the conventional distributor used to transmit sparks tothe plugs
DC (DIRECT CURRENT)Current electricity which flow in only one direction.
DETACHABLE LEADSBetter quality multimeters and timing lights have replaceable leads, some of whichhave just pointed ends for probing circuits whereas others have screw-on crocodileclips to attach to components.
DIODEA one-way gate in an electrical circuit, usually used to protect a circuit or a deviceagainst reverse connection or flow. Also used to turn AC current in to DC.
DISTRIBUTORThe traditional means of directing timed ignition sparks to the cylinders in thecorrect firing order. These days these tasks are performed by electronic ignitionmodules
DWELLSee CAM above
ECM - (Electronic Control Module)The “computer” used to manage certain aspects of modern engine functions. The more advanced types control many functions very efficiently, while optimising reliability. Sometimes incorrectly called the ECU (unit).

GLOSSARY
ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMJust another name for the vehicle's computer (See previous entry).
FREQUENCY (Hz)A measure of the recurrence of events such as rotation or vibration. This is in some ways like RPM measurement
FUEL INJECTION (PI)The modern vehicle uses a system of petrol injection instead of a carburettor to mix the petrol and air. PI does this more efficiently and is more easily controlled by the ECM.
FUSEA specially designed weakness in an electrical circuit which fails before anydamage occurs to more valuable parts.
GAS ANALYSERA device for displaying the levels of various gas emissions from vehicle exhausts. The most important ones being CO (carbon monoxide), CO2 (carbon dioxide), HC (hydro carbons) and oxygen.
HCUsually unburnt petrol resulting from engine mis-firing or badly worn exhaustvalves.
HIGH IMPEDANCEIn multimeters this characteristic ensures that electric current does not passthrough the meter and into a delicate circuit enough to do any damage.
HT LEADSThe conductors of high-voltage (HT) current between the distributor, coil and thesparking plugs. (The T actually means tension).
IGNITION SYSTEMThe electrical system on a vehicle which produces the sparks in each cylinder.
IGNITION MODULE An electronic device replacing the distributor points/condenser and performing the same function more efficiently.
IMPEDANCEIn electrical circuits, the total restrictions to the free flow of current through thecircuit. HIGH IMPEDANCE - see above.
INDUCTIVE PICK-UPA clip-on detector of radio waves used to sense the flow of current.
LAMBDA SENSORAn electronic sensor which detects oxygen in the exhaust system.
MANUAL OVER-RIDEThe facility on multimeters to change from AUTORANGING ( see above) to a scalewhich the user selects.
39
GLOSSARY
MIXTURE (PETROL)This is the term applied to combination of petrol and air which is dispensed by the carburettor or petrol injection system, from which the engine derives itsenergy to perform. The mixture (sometimes called the air fuel ratio) is important to ensure that thecombustion process works at its most efficient. If there is too much petrol, all of it will not burn because of the shortage of oxygen and this unburnt petrol will cause the combustion colour to be yellow/orange (as seen through Colortune). This will result in wasted petrol and a dirty exhaust. If there is insufficient petrol, the engine will overheat and be under-powered. This too can result in over consumption as the engine may need to work harder then necessary.
MULTIMETERAny device for revealing the characteristics of current electricity.
OBD - (Onboard Diagnostics)A system within the ECM of storing and identifying faults that occur in the performance of the engine and associated electrical systems.
OHMThe electrical unit for resistance in a circuit ( ).
OHM'S LAWThe relationship between voltage, current and resistance. Namely,RESISTANCE = VOLTAGE DIVIDED BY CURRENT
PERIODThe time between pulses of current, it is measured as an extra aid tounderstanding what is going on in a circuit.
PROTECTED AGAINST MISCONNECTIONBetter quality multimeters and other devices have special circuits which ensure nodamage can occur to delicate components as a result of connecting leads thewrong way round.
PULSE WIDTHUsed to test vehicles fitted with electronic ignition and petrol injection systems, and driven by pulses of electricity. The duration of these pulses is as significanton these vehicles as dwell was on older, conventional ones.
RESISTANCEThis is the restriction in an circuit which tries to stop the flow of current electricitythrough the circuit. A conductor has low resistance whereas an insulator has veryhigh resistance: between these two extremes, varying levels of resistance occur asa result of faults or because components introduced to achieve desired effects.RPM INDICATOR - this term is applied by Gunson to other methods of indicating
engine speed without the expensive components of a conventional tachometer.
SOLID STATEThe description given to integrated circuits now rarely used (see Glossary Extra below).

GLOSSARY
STROBOSCOPICThe kind of light which turns on in rhythm with the occurrence of somethinghappening and off after it has happened. So the event is seen only at a specifictime or in a specific place. In the case of TIMING an engine, to get the fixed timingmark and the moving mark to meet, the STROBOSCOPIC TIMING LIGHT isarranged to switch on as the moving mark is near or opposite to the fixed mark. This has the effect of making the moving mark to appear stationary and it allowsthe adjustment to be made accurately.
TACHOMETERA circuit in a multimeter which indicates engine speed as a result of countingpulses of current electricity passing through the ignition system.
TDC - (Top Dead Centre)The highest point of the travel of a piston in a cylinder. BTDC (before TDC) - A way of describing the correct timing of the spark in a cylinder.
THERMISTORAn electronic device reacting to temperature
TRANSDUCERA sensor which responds to temperature or pressure
TRANSISTORA form of electronic switch
VOLTThe unit of electrical energy (potential difference). The voltage is proportional tothe current and limited by the resistance contained in the circuit (see OHM'S LAWabove). The difference in voltage between the ends of a circuit, is what causeselectricity to move through it. (See next - GLOSSARY EXTRA)
