GROUNDSMAN OF THE YEAR!
Mousehole AFC’s very own MIKE PRISK has won this season’s “Cornwall Groundsman of the Year” Award
The Award was originally set up by the FA “to recognise the contribution of
these unsung heroes of the grassroots game and encourage the development of groundsmanship”.
Before Good Friday’s game against Penzance, Mike was presented with the
award by John Mead, representing Cornwall Football Association.
Mike’s certificate is on display in the clubhouse and pictured on the back cover of today’s programme
Mike said:”I really enjoy all the work there is to do at the ground. It certainly keeps me very busy during the week and throughout the year, as well as my ‘helpers’. What gives me particular pleasure is then seeing the players able to play great football and doing so well at the top of the League". Mousehole Chairman Tim Richardson added: "Mike thoroughly deserves this award. He puts in countless hours in all types of weather over the weeks and months. Trungle Parc has become a really true surface and is a credit to the club. I know the management and players fully appreciate being able to play the type of attractive football on it that has brought success and delighted the supporters." STOP PRESS! Cornwall FA yesterday published an article on the ‘Groundsman of the
Year’ award in their Newsletter and on their website (cornwallfa.com)
CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME: Tim Richardson
Welcome to Trungle Parc to all our local supporters and to all players, officials and visitors from further east, for our important League game with Sticker.
Sticker are one of the newest sides in the SWP West Division, this being only their fourth season at this level, and since then they’ve done really well, so much so that
this season they applied for promotion to the SWP Premier Division.
So expect them to be ‘up for it’ today. They’ve had a couple of disappointing results but got back to their best with an 8-3 demolition job at Porthleven on Tuesday
evening. They’ll know they may need to finish second in the League – below us (of course!) but above Argyle - to be able to fulfil their ambitions.
I thought the Good Friday game with Penzance was a great occasion: a quarter-final tie in the Charity Cup, another local derby, fine sunny weather, a healthy number in
the crowd, and a good win…….but also the presentation before the match of the ‘Cornwall Groundsman of the Year’ award to Mike Prisk, a very proud moment for
me as Chairman and for the club as a whole.
Last Tuesday evening at Wadebridge Town we weren’t at our best in the first half, despite going 1-0 up, but after a much better second half we finished 4-0 winners – don’t forget it’s only a few weeks ago that Wadebridge got a draw with Argyle. I was particularly pleased with our travelling support – I reckon we possibly outnumbered
and certainly out-voiced the home crowd!
A reminder of some important dates:
Next Tuesday evening, 12th April, it’s the Charity Cup semi-final against Dobwalls at St Austell AFC, kick off 7:30pm – let’s have another good turn
out to cheer The Seagulls into the Final!
The away League fixture with Penzance, moved from Good Friday to accommodate the Charity Cup tie, has been re-scheduled for
Wednesday 4th May at Penlee Park, with kick off now 6.45pm.
Our end-of-season club awards evening at Queens Hotel Penzance has been changed from 25th to 18TH JUNE. Please see Peter Robinson to book, pay
(£26 per person), set up a pay-by-instalments plan or see the menu.
The South West Peninsula League Annual Presentation Dinner is on Saturday 4th June at the Holiday Inn Plymouth, with tickets at £27 and a special B&B
rate offered by the hotel. Please see our club secretary Darren Woodard or email [email protected] to express interest, and book/pay by 30th
April.
Cheers, Tim

QUICK QUOTES FROM QUINNY
News and views from player-manager Wayne Quinn
Welcome to you all for our first home game of April against Sticker at Trungle Parc.
We are now approaching the “home stretch” with ten League games to go. I won’t call it the “business end” of the season like some people do – because we’ve been “doing
the business” since the start, and in fact in a very “businesslike” way!
Our Good Friday game against Penzance is a case in point. We’d had two gruelling ‘away’ matches against Bodmin Town and St Dennis in the previous six days, so we just
needed to get a result to go through to the Cornwall Charity Cup semi-finals.
And that’s what we did - no more, no less. No dramas, nothing too elaborate. Anyone who expected another Boxing Day-type performance and result from us, especially as
The Magpies have improved since then (witness their 3-1 away win last week at Sticker), may have been a bit disappointed…….but I think it would have been
unreasonable to have had that expectation in the first place!
And once more at Wadebridge Town on Tuesday evening – a side we’ve always found difficult to beat on their own patch – we got a first-half goal despite not playing all that
well, but dominated the second half to get the goals. We were again beset with injuries but all the replacements and the subs, including young Josh, did a great job.
Despite our lead at the top, we’re assuming nothing. Precious points are what matter and we’ll have to work especially hard to get them – we always aim for three!
I’d like to pay special tribute to Groundsman Mike Prisk for the work he puts in on the pitch. Compared with how it was several years ago, it’s a joy to play on and especially
pleasing to be able to put into practice everything we want to do as players. So, thanks again, Mike and congratulations on your award from all of us.
Thanks again for your support. We all appreciate it. We hope some of you will be able to make it to our Charity Cup semi-final tie with Dobwalls next Tuesday evening at St Austell – let’s hear you when you’re there! – and again here next Saturday against
Dobwalls once more, in the League this time.

SEAGULL SECTION
“TROPHY STATUS FOR DEAD DUTCH SEAGULL”
In 1970, in the match between Feyenoord and Sparta Rotterdam in the top division of Dutch football, home ‘keeper Eddy Treytel launched a high clearance downfield, which
struck a seagull in flight, killing it instantly. When its body was retrieved from the pitch, some thoughtful person took the ex-seagull to a taxidermist,
and ever since then, the stuffed version has stood proudly on display among Feyenoord’s many domestic and European trophies.

MATCH IMPRESSIONS: MOUSEHOLE 3-0 PENZANCE CORNWALL CHARITY CUP (DURNING LAWRENCE CUP) in aid of ROYAL CORNWALL HOSPITALS 'CORNISH HEART UNIT FUND'
QUARTER FINAL TIE, TRUNGLE PARC, GOOD FRIDAY 25TH MARCH
Scorers: Steve Burt (16), Bradley Wills (29, 33)
Mousehole started this match only about 60 hours after the end of that heroic encounter with Bodmin. Luke Johnson was cup-tied (with Illogan), Liam Andrew was unavailable, Dan Magee started and Dom Angove continued to deputise in goal for the hobbling SPB.
A fine sunny morning and a superb-looking playing surface – what better way to start the proceedings and what better backdrop for the presentation on the pitch to Mike Prisk for the ‘Groundsman of the Year’ award? Well-merited applause from players and supporters.
A bright, fast opening, with an improved-looking Magpies out to erase memories of that heavy Boxing Day defeat. More spirit, more attacking threat. Three near-misses in the first half, with Dom having to be alert.
The Seagulls – patient, unhurried, some half chances. Then, 1-0 on 16 after a great passing movement down the right, pulling the defence out of position and leaving Steve Burt arriving in the centre with the time and room to stroke the ball calmly, Burty-fashion, into the corner.
On 29, a forward run by Lewis Caspell down the middle, stopped by a half-tackle, Bradley Wills picks up the loose ball and it’s 2-0.
On 33, Penzance’s Alex Miller, trying to hoof the ball away from the danger area into what would be called ‘Row Z’ elsewhere (the equivalent here would be the newly-planted potato field), instead slices the ball horribly back across goal, and Bradley doesn’t miss those.
Quinny’s half-time team talk probably consisted of: “Job done”. All three subs got some action, Chris “Rusty” Prout for the whole 45. Bradley came close to another hat trick on several occasions, Wade Brown’s shot when through one-on-one hit the bar and went over, and Lewis scorched the woodwork from an angle.
Penzance never gave up, with the lively Connor Davey coming closest with a low cross-shot just past the far post, and they had a couple of good chances. If they hadn’t conceded that third goal, and if they’d taken one of their chances, it might have been a closer game, but who knows, what if Mousehole had then stepped up a gear, like they do?
So, yes, “Job Done”, and now Dobwalls in the semi-final after they surprisingly knocked out Sticker, on penalties, while St Dennis will meet improving Illogan in the other semi. The details of our match are now confirmed: the ‘neutral’ venue is St Austell AFC, the date Tuesday 12
th
April, and the kick off time 7:30pm, with extra time and penalties if necessary. The team: Dom Angove (Goalkeeper), Billy Curtis, Calron Hall, Mark Vercesi, Wayne Quinn, Steve Burt (Captain), Frazer Cadman, Dan Magee, Bradley Wills, Lewis Caspell, Tim Nixon.
Substitutes: Chris Prout (for Calron Hall, 46), Wade Brown (for Tim Nixon, 59), Matt Laity (for Billy Curtis, 73)

MATCH IMPRESSIONS: WADEBRIDGE TOWN 0-4 MOUSEHOLE Carlsberg South West Peninsula League, Division 1 West
Tuesday 5th April 2016 (7:30 pm) at Bodieve Park, Wadebridge
Scorers: Bradley Wills (38), Mark Vercesi (pen, 47), Lewis Caspell (60), Wade Brown (82) The sun setting, the floodlights on, a cold wind blowing up the Camel estuary, a ground and a team that hadn’t given us much joy over the years, and the proverbial game of two halves. The Seagulls put in a strangely below-par first-half performance in which they might well have been a couple of goals down, but it was they who snatched a one-nil lead with their only serious threat thanks to a Mark Vercesi defence-splitting through-ball and a low shot past the advancing goalkeeper by Bradley Wills seven minutes before the break. The second half was a completely different story. Wadebridge’s half-time team talk was shredded as Cheesy won a penalty in the first minute after being tripped, and walloped in number two. Then, the real Seagulls turned up, spending almost all the rest of the game on the front foot and looking likely to fashion a scoring chance with almost every attack. Goals number three and four would have had the TV panellists drooling. Some clever passing on the right to create space for Steve Burt to drive in a perfect cross for Lewis Caspell to get ahead of the defender and power a 10-yard header high into the net for 3-0 on 60 minutes. A brownie point to anyone who remembers his last headed goal! Josh Otto and Wade Brown came on together as subs, 16-year old Josh demonstrating why he’s been on Argyle’s books, with instant control, positive movement and an eye for the right pass, and earning himself a whole-team celebration after swerving a great ball forward for Wadey to take the ball past the keeper and slot in for the fourth on 82 minutes. It’s well worth a look on Mousehole’s Facebook page for a short video of this goal! The win takes us 12 points ahead of Argyle with the same number of games played, and 13 ahead of today’s visitors Sticker, who’ve played one more. There are 10 hard games left in the League, including three against top sides. But it could be the games against lower-placed teams, who are likely to ‘raise their game’ as the saying goes, that might prove to be just as challenging, on the evidence of the first half here - against a side in the bottom three. The team: Dom Angove (Goalkeeper), Billy Curtis, Chris Prout, Frazer Cadman, Liam Andrew, Wayne Quinn, Steve Burt (Captain), Mark Vercesi, Dan Magee, Bradley Wills, Lewis Caspell.
Substitutes: Wade Brown (for Dan Magee, 73), Josh Otto (for Frazer Cadman, 73), Tim Nixon, Calron Hall

NOTES ABOUT STICKER AFC
The club has been disbanded and re-formed in five different periods over the last 100 years or so (1911-1914, 1920-1929 in the St Austell & District league, 1933-1939, 1948-1952 in the Truro & District League), and then continuously since 1966.
The ‘Football Club History Database’ shows that Sticker joined the Cornwall Combination in 1971 but left after 3 years after finishing 15/16, 13/17 and 16/17.
They later joined the East Cornwall League, winning it in 1981/82 and in 1985/86.
From 1990/91 Sticker finished in the bottom half of the table in ten of the next 15 years, but in the last ten years since 2005/06 they have had a consistent upturn in results, including a top four position four times in seven years, and three creditable seasons after promotion.
In 2011/12 they were runners-up in the East Cornwall League, losing only 6 games and scoring 102 goals against 37. They were then promoted to the South West Peninsula League, Division 1 West, in 2012/13, and in their first season at the higher level finished fourth, as well as winning the Cornwall Charity Cup. In 2013/14 and 2014/15 they finished 4th and 5th.
In the current season - only the club’s fourth at this level – Sticker have been near the top of the League all season but suffered a 3-1 home defeat last Saturday to Penzance (some revenge for The Magpies’ 8-0 home defeat in November).
They also surprisingly lost in the recent Charity Cup quarter-final at home - to Dobwalls on penalties, a side they had already beaten twice in the League.
Last Tuesday Sticker won handsomely 8-3 at lowly Porthleven, which left them 13 points behind Mousehole having played a game more.
Mousehole beat Sticker 2-1 at their Burngullow Park home on the opening day of the season with two Wade Brown goals.
Sticker’s Twitter page describes them as an ‘aspirational’ football club. In January they were one of four clubs to apply for promotion to the SWP Premier Division.
