Charles was a professor with a huge house and a fortune. Today he lives in a
small caravan where there is only second hand furniture. There are no signs that he
was a rich man. He gets his clothes and other things from charity shops.
This change is not a tragedy. Charles was happy to give up the lifestyle of a rich
man. He was tired of being a person who had everything and many people have
nothing. He made the choice to give all his money away. He says it has brought him
happiness. “A few years ago,” says Charles, “I was a millionaire, but I knew there
were a lot of hungry people in the world.” So, he gave away all his money to charities.
When he had some left, he gave away small banknotes in the streets of local poor
areas.
Charles believes that many people want to earn a lot of money so that they will
not have any worries. However, most people never make much money. He decided to
drop out and has discovered that having only a little money makes you free. Are there
any things he misses? “No, I’m much happier now. I wouldn’t go back to being rich for
anything – no way.”

Listening 2 ( Items 6-10 )
I have always loved travelling by train . It’s not quick or convenient as flying , but
it’s a real experience . you have time to see the country and to meet ordinary
people , and for me , as a writer , it’s important to have that kind of experience
.My first book, about a train journey across SOUTH America , sold quite well , and
so many publisher asked me where I wanted to go next . “China”, I replied . I
booked a seat on the train from Paris , where I live , to Beijing . The cheapest way
was to go with a group of tourist . We travelled all the way across Germany ,
Poland , Russia and Mongolia to the others and went off to discover by myself .
In China , I travelled on forty different trains and covered ten thousand
kilometers. It took me six months , and it wasn’t always easy . Perhaps it was a
mistake going there in the winter . Hadn’t realized how cold China could be ! But I
enjoyed the food ,and the people were polite and cheerful , even though life is
hard for many of them . I saw many interesting places ,but the famous Great Wall
of China was very disappointing and I didn’t like Chinese cities at all-so noisy and
over –crowded ! But I shall always remember the Oasis town of Urumchi and , of
course , the amazing Caves of Yungyang , which people still use as homes
