Old WaverlyNews from The Golf Club of Mississippi Vol. 23 • July
TurTle PoinT inTerclub This year marked the ninth installment of the Old Waverly-Turtle Point Challenge. With 30 players on each team, Captains
Bill McGuire and Cecil Chiles had their hands full. Day One consisted of 15 fourball matches. Three points were up for grabs in each match. When the day ended, Old Waverly had a slim 3 point lead. Sunday’s singles matches were a little more lopsided, with Old Waverly taking 55 ½ points to 34 ½ points. The final total was Old Waverly, 79 ½ point, to Turtle Points’ 55 ½ points. We want to thank all of this year’s participants.

aerifying our greens July 29 -30. This is a necessary process to ensure the health and consistency of the greens.
Red, White, & Blue ScRamBlePatRiot Golf day – July 4th
We are making a few changes to this year’s Red, White and Blue Scramble. In order to fit into everyone’s schedule, we will allow groups to make tee times throughout the day. The format will be 18 holes of four person scramble. Players will alternate playing from the red, white, and blue tees. The Red, White and Blue scramble will also become our Patriot Golf Day. Patriot Golf Day and The Folds of Honor Foundation was the vision of PGA Professional Dan Rooney, a former F-16 fighter pilot in the Oklahoma Air National Guard, who has served three tours in Iraq.
Since the launch of Patriot Golf Day in 2007, more than $12.8 million has been raised and more than 3,500 scholarships have been awarded to children and spous-es of military men and women killed or disabled while serving our great nation. The goal for participating facilities is to collect a $1 donation from every golfer to support the Folds of Honor Foundation. Please call the Golf Shop to sign up.

This year's Member Guest was one to remember as we celebrated our 25 years of a great golfing tradition. forty-nine teams competed in the event. The com-petitors were treated to an outstanding golf course, excellent food, and memories for the future. After two days of golf and five nine hole matches, the flight winners which are listed tested their skills in our playoff for the overall championship. The first round of the playoff saw two teams make birdie, Johnny fair/Ryan McKay and David Ruff/brett Rivers. Round two was a hard fought battle between the two
teams, but David Ruff made a putt to cap-ture the title for his team. A special thank you goes out to all the members that made this 25th anniversary of our Mem-ber Guest one of our best!! Congratula-tions to David Ruff and brett Rivers for being this year's Champions.

WOMEN'S STATE AMATEURold Waverly had the honor of hosting the Missis-
sippi Women’s state Amateur June 3-6. seventy-Two ladies from across the state competed in this presti-gious event. The competitors played a qualifying day on Monday and then moved on to match play for the next three days. The overall championship was decid-ed on hole 18 with 16 year old high school standout Kathleen Gallagher winning 1up over All-American Ally McDonald. This event was a huge success due to the help and dedication of our women golfers from old Waverly. Thanks to all that competed and con-gratulations to all of the winners!
Many of you probably know Alex from her time as a server where she did a wonderful job. Sometime ago we decided to move her to the position of ex-peditor in the kitchen where she has excelled. We wish all staff members had Alex’s work ethic and attention to detail. We are privileged to have her as part of the Old Waverly F&B team. Thank you Alex for your hard work and dedication.

instructing, playing, coaching, and growing golfers gives many pGA professionals the chance to see the in’s and out’s of getting better at this game. however, mastery of the game and accomplishment of the goals we all set for ourselves have one thing in common; it never, ever happens fast enough.
it doesn’t matter if my client is an eight year old or a tour player, mastery and accomplishment of goals AlWAYs takes time. What i am beginning to see over and over again is the difference in the way “winners” and “losers” look at performance. They are very different.
What i would like to offer is this. each time we hit a golf shot we have a chance to form a strategy, make a decision, pick a target, execute the shot, and then reinforce the outcome. however, that doesn’t always happen. sometimes there is no strategy, the decision turns to hope, the target is not clear, the shot is still executed but the reinforcement is totally dependent on the outcome.
on your next round of golf, do yourself a favor. on every shot have a clear image of what you are trying to do. say to yourself, “i am going to hit this driver at that tree with a three yard fade.” After you have created a strategy, just walk in, go through your routine, and hit the shot; as it sails through the air and comes to rest, be objective (not emotional) about the outcome.
“Winners” do this all the time. They are always getting better at strategy, being decisive, targeting, and reinforcing the shot. “losers,” on the other hand, don’t do this always. Remember, for all of us it will take time to accomplish our goals. Along the way there will be many different performances between the first and eighteenth flagstick. A huge step in the right direction is hitting each shot with a purpose!

If you have not experienced this one of a kind event, you need to mark your calendar. The Glow Ball tournament on July 6th is one of our more exciting events you will have the chance to compete in. The golf course will be outlined in different colors representing fairways, water hazards, and greens, along with glow balls flying through the sky! This four person scramble will begin at 6:00 pm on the front nine. After completion of the front nine, dinner will be served and upon darkness, we will play around the lake with our glow ball supplies. Please call the Golf Shop to sign up or for more details at 662.494.8780.

of old Waverly's Member Guest Tournament. We had a great field of players and everyone enjoyed the tournament.
i also want to thank everyone who attended the fleishhacker Golf Cottage open house and to the many contributors who played in the tournament on that day. our junior golfers are really working hard and sticking with it! And for that, we are all proud.
At the end of July (29-30), brad suggs and his staff will be aerifying greens. last year i was amazed how quickly the greens recovered, and we are confident we will have the same results this year!
it's hard to believe that we are only 68 days away from Mississippi state and ole Miss beginning their seasons. i encourage you to make your plans now - lodging at old Waverly fills quickly. Don't miss out on staying at old Waverly, playing the course, dining, and then watching your favorite team on the gridiron.

June 15th will be a day to remember at old Waverly as we have added to our junior golf program by the grand opening of the fleishhacker Golf Cottage. This new addition will add to the Waverly experience for our juniors by not only helping with their golf fundamentals, but more importantly teaching each child the importance of honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, and perseverance. Along with the grand opening, 16 teams competed in an 18 hole scramble. These teams, along with other generous donations, have made this opportunity for junior golfers of the southeast to experience golf through old Waverly. Thank you to all that have supported this wonderful cause! Next time you visit the club, we invite you to come by and check out this great addition to your club!
