Bowling Green: this is where Dr. Charles Wythe Gleaves was born and where his mother Maria grew up. The farm belonged to Maria's father, Charles Lewis Crockett and was well known during his day for the horse race track on the land. The house is no longer standing.

My grandmother Gleaves was also a genealogist so I had her research to start with. She had researched eleven ancestors who served in the American Revolutionary War. She and my grandfather both grew up in southwest Virginia in Wythe County in the town of Wytheville. I try to go back to Wytheville at least once a year to see family and do research. Our ancestor William Gleaves settled in Wythe County in 1770 just after the territory was opened for settlement. That area had been off limits to white settlers after the French and Indian War in 1763. William received more land there for his service in the Revolutionary War. The amazing thing is there are still descendants living on the same land and farming it today!

sits on land that Samuel's grandfather, William Gleaves, received for his service in the American

Revolutionary War. Some of William's descendants still live in the house and farm the land today.

When I was married, I wore my mother's wedding dress and the Anna veil. The dress was made of 100% silk fabric from a German parachute that Mother's brother, Charlie, captured during WWII. The Anna veil was originally given to Anna Eliza Martin by her parents. The Chantilly lace veil, according to an Antiques Roadshow appraiser, was made about 1840 and is worth $1500-3000. The veil has been passed down through the family to be worn by descendants named Anna. Anna Gleaves, Anna Bob Rich and Anna Alice Sampselle all wore it. Anna Leslie Hix was so named in the hopes that she would also wear the veil one day.
