Improving Energy Efficiency in School Networks with IPv6

Page 2: GEN6 IPv6 pilot on energy consumption in schools

IPv6 Pilot in Greece “Energy Efficiency in School Networks with IPv6“

• Vision – Mobilize school communities for environmental protection

– Raise energy awareness by interconnecting energy smart meters in selected schools intranets

– Raise awareness in new technologies, especially IPv6

• The pilot aims to interconnect intelligent smart meters over IPv6 in 50 schools and influence the behaviour of the school communities so as to reduce energy consumption.

• Energy related information from participating schools will be recorded using smart meters, stored and processed using scalable cloud computing and disseminated to the users via a secure communication channel.

• GSN has acquired one /47 and one /48 IPv6 address spaces from RIPE.

• The GSN backbone network is fully IPv6-enabled, and includes IPv6 support on all point-to-point (p2p) links of the primary and secondary nodes of GSN.

• Peering with GSN’s ISP (GRNET) and the access network is also IPv6-enabled.

• On the access network, IPv6 has also been enabled for 95% of GSN users.

• The energy power meters installed in schools forward energy consumption data (over IPv6 ) to Intelen Cloud Infrastructure.

• The storage infrastructure integrates near real time stream analysis

• An interactive web platform allows secure access to energy consumption data

• End-to-end connectivity is supported for management purposes

Upcoming Plans

Pre FIA Workshop: IPv6 going »live« - Dublin, 7/5/2013

Page 12: GEN6 IPv6 pilot on energy consumption in schools

IPv6 Pilot in Greece “Energy Efficiency in School Networks with IPv6“

• Easy integration of smart sensors in the networking infrastructure (6LoWPAN).

• No need for use of NAT gateways and dynamic IPs that reduce the overall availability of the service and increase maintenance costs.

• Support of autonomic networking characteristics (auto-configuration mechanisms, ad-hoc networking communications, bootstraping of the infrastructure)

• End-to-end communication and management of the smart sensors - no need for physical access for management purposes cost reduction.

• Increase in the overall system security (effectively control access to the application servers or the energy smart meters).

Primary Results

Page 19: GEN6 IPv6 pilot on energy consumption in schools

IPv6 Pilot in Greece “Energy Efficiency in School Networks with IPv6“

• Use technology to create value for the community – Not deploying technology for the sake of technology

• IPv6 can become an enabling technology – Not possible to be done in IPv4-only environment – Bidirectional monitoring (e2e connectivity) – Simpler security policies

• Advanced services create new challenges for the design teams and operations – Re-addressing – Zero-configuration for end-systems and integration systems – Address challenges from the operational perspective

• Further opportunities still need to be explored – Autonomicity (smart grid)

• GEN6 perspective – First production services within school intranets
