SKILL
METHODS OF IMPROVING OUR SKILLS
i: Abilities ii: Guidance
ABILITIES
GCSE PE: Skill
i: ABILITIES
ABILITIES Often, when we talk about Skill – we use
the word ABILITY (they have ability in …)
But, we must understand ABILITY does
not match our ‘definition of skill’
i.e It is not something that we learn
Abilities are inherited qualities
• When we are born, we inherit things from
our parents and family tree
Height Hair Colour
As well as ‘Visible Characteristics, we can
also inherit other similarities
We could be good at Maths, like our Mum
We could find languages easy, like Dad
Also, we could inherit ‘Physical’
characteristics that help us in Sport, PE
and activity
Task: Name the ‘Components of
Fitness’
These ‘Components’ are also known as your ‘Abilities’ in the Skill section of the course
Everyone has them – but some of us have them at a higher standard, some at a lower standard

Endurance

Agility Balance Flexibility coordinationR.Time
‘Abilities’ are our ‘natural qualities’ that we are
born with
They are ‘innate…..inside us’
They give us an ‘advantage’ in certain activities
TASK: ‘Match the Abilities’
Using the Pictures, name the ‘most important’ abilities

Guidance When we try to learn a new skill, we often
need help from a teacher or Coach.
We need to understand how the Skill is
performed

10 eight year old children.
You want them to ‘learn’ the skill of basic ‘Hitting’
List all the ways you could get them to
understand and perform the Skill

Guidance and Learning Styles
Some people will have a ‘favourite’ type of
Guidance
This is sometimes called a ‘Learning Style’
Teachers/Coaches should know this

Class, where there may be different
‘favourite’ Styles?
Task: My Favourite Learning Style
