Understanding Magnetic Stirrers Components & Control Panel:

There are many applications for the magnetic stirrer. In fact many of us are already familiar with the concept with manual stirrers.

However the magnetic stirrer open so many more doors in terms of usefulness and functionality that makes them vital in daily use.

This is one of the reasons why magnetic stirrers are commonly found in chemical and biological laboratories.

This article make understanding the magnetic stirrer very easy by describing in detail the various components of a magnetic stirrer, the role of several elements and brief introduction to how the control panel can be operated.

Components of a Magnetic Stirrer:

Magnetic stirrers are usually microprocessor controlled and available in several sizes too.

However the general principal behind the device remains the same as do the Magnetic Stirrer Components.

The main components of a magnetic stirrer include:

Microprocessor control unit

A motor (this drives the internal magnet)

A hotplate (this heats the sample)

A probe (this monitors the temperature)

A conventional magnetic stirrer consists of a flat or round bottomed laboratory flask

and an immersed magnet which can be either bar, oval, pellet or egg shaped. This

essentially depends on the size of the container.

The way this works is when the magnetic stirrer is activated the base magnet

effectively rotates the container using the magnet present in the container.

It is important to note that though this process requires that a magnet be immersed into the

container with the sample, it is completely harmless and does not contaminate the solution.

On the other hand there is also a downside to using a magnetic stirrer. When it comes to

highly viscous liquids the magnetic stirrer may not be of any use.

Although it is important to note that the magnetic stirrer have an adjustable speed setting

and range from 50 to 1600 rpm.

Functionality of the temperature probe:

The temperature probe is used for monitoring the temperature as the name suggests,

however it does have several other functions as well.

The temperature probes are connected to the microprocessor hence they can be directly

operated via the main control panel of the magnetic stirrer. Thus the temperature can also

be monitored on the control panel.

Besides monitoring the temperature the temperature probe doubles as a safety device. Thus

when the there is a temperature drop and it is not in safe range an automatic shutdown of

device is initiated.

Magnetic Stirrer Control Panel:

Each magnetic stirrer will have a control panel however the control panel itself may differ

from brand to brand. There are several important functions that are controlled with the help

of a control panel as mentioned below:

Powering the device.

Controlling the heating function.

Controlling the magnetic motor.

Control of the motor RPM.

Maintaining the right temperature level.

Timer operation.
