Of course, I lovethe foamy cream with theheart-shaped caramel driz-zle, but what that has doneto the coffee makers isbeyond my comprehension.Now there are capsules,large and small, of everyflavor imaginable, ma-chines that make coffeeshort or long and accompa-nying equipment to makemilk frothy hot or cold. Oh,the possibilities!Some newer homes are
now considered “smart.”These are homes often withautomated doorbells withcameras. Their climate can
be controlled with a tap ofyour phone. Coffee can bestarted so it is ready by thetime you wake up, andmusic and information canbe commanded out of thinair by speaking loudly sothat a home-automatingapparatus can executeonline searches and getyour favorite tunes playingat your whim. Rosie therobot has been replaced bya small round disc thatvacuums on a regular basiswithout even being asked.But how much technologyis too much?Of course, our desire is
to keep up with the latestinnovations. Many of youwho are of a certain agemay remember the 1960stelevision cabinets thatcame with built-in speak-ers, a record player on oneside and a bar cabinet onthe other, the 1970s bedsthat had speakers on theheadboards and a slot foryour 8-track tapes or themassaging beds that madeyou feel like hurling —especially after dinner and
a couple of cocktails.Today’s furniture makers
have taken notice and havebegun to incorporate tech-nology in ways never be-fore imaginable. Beds canbe made softer or firmeraccording to your sleepinghabits and try to adjustthemselves to whether yousnore or not. The newestselections of sofas andcomfortable chairs forfamily rooms are equippedwith USB ports for recharg-ing your tablets, laptopsand phones. Recently,there are even wallpaperswoven with LED lights inthem and fiber-optic fab-rics that can change colorsat your desire.I enjoy the novelty of
these innovations as muchas any consumer, butknowing how quickly tech-nologies change nowadays,I’d think really hard before
spending any significantamount of money on anyof these trendy items.There are some innova-tions that work really well,such as those that turnlights on and off, as well assurveillance and securitysystems that allow you tosee what is going on in andaround your home forprotection. But sometimes,your home may be gettingtoo smart. As a matter offact, the other day, I wasjust thinking out loud andthe home-automating ap-paratus that sometimesgoes by a single nameanswered me back. table awnings have prosand cons. “We replace a lotof retractables becausepeople forget to pull themin,” Perez said.“Fixed awnings get
blown to shreds and areoften damaged by hail,”Lienberg said.
CREATE AN OASISA canopy over a patio or
pool can make outdoorliving more comfortable.
“You can create your ownoasis in your yard,” Martensaid.A louvered canopy can be
opened to let in sunshineand breezes, or closed forshade and protection fromrain. “In a hurricane, you’dkeep them open so the windcan blow through,” Martensaid.Accessories can dress up
