Items to avoid Reasons to avoid
Alcoholic beverages Can cause intoxication,coma, and death.
Avocado The leaves, seeds,fruit, and barkcontain persin, which cancause vomiting and diarrhea.
Bones from fish,poultry, or other meat
sources
Can cause obstruction or laceration of the digestive system.
Cat food Generally too high inprotein and fats.
Chocolate, coffee, tea,and other caffeine
Contain caffeine, theobromine, or theophylline, which cancause vomiting and diarrhea and be toxic to the heart andnervous systems.
Citrus oil extracts Can cause vomiting.
Fat t rimmings Can causepancreatitis.
Fish (raw, canned orcooked)
If fed exclusively or in high amounts can result in athiamine (aB vitamin)deficiency leading to lossof appetite, seizures, and insevere cases, death.
Grapes, raisins andcurrants
Contain anunknown toxin, which can damage the kidneys.There have been noproblems associated withgrape seedextract.
Hops Unknown compound causes panting,increased heart rate,elevated temperature, seizures, and death.
Human vitaminsupplementscontainingiron
Can damage the lining of the digestive system and be toxic tothe other organs including the liver and kidneys.

Contain sulfoxidesand disulfides, which can damage red blood
cells and cause anemia. Cats are moresusceptible thandogs. Garlic is less toxic thanonions.

illness, and even death. The following common fooditems should not be fed (intentionally or unintentionally)to dogs. This list is, of course, incomplete because wecan not possibly list everything yourdog should not eat.

Pits from peaches andplums
Can cause obstruction of the digestive tract.
Raw eggs Contain anenzyme called avidin, which decreases theabsorption ofbiotin (a B vitamin). This can lead to skin and haircoat problems. Raw eggs mayalso containSalmonella.
Raw meat Maycontain bacteria suchasSalmonellaandE. coli, which cancause vomiting and diarrhea.*
Rhubarb leaves Contain oxalates, which canaffect the digestive, nervous, andurinary systems.
Salt If eaten in large quantities it may lead to electrolyteimbalances.
String Can become trapped inthe digestive system; called a "stringforeign body."
Sugary foods Can lead toobesity, dental problems, and possibly diabetesmellitus.
Table scraps (in largeamounts)
Table scraps are not nutritionally balanced. They should neverbe more than10% of the diet. Fat should be trimmed from meat;bones should not be fed.
Tobacco Contains nicotine, which affects the digestive and nervoussystems.Can result in rapid heartbeat, collapse,coma, anddeath.
Yeast dough Can expandand produce gas inthe digestive system, causingpain and possible rupture of the stomach or intestines.
Xylitol(artificial
sweetener)
Can cause very low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which can
