Increasing Consumer Participation
• When cartons are added to a facility, priority
should be to inform stakeholders
o Collectors, communities, residents
• Cartons should be added to list of accepted
materials on website and other materials
o City website is the second place consumers go
to look for recyclability information*
• Postcards and/or bill stuffers – the most
effective education tactic**
• List food and beverage cartons as separate category (just like you would plastic, paper, glass, etc.)
• Provide detailed list of what a carton contains (including milk, juice, soup, broth, wine, etc.)
• Include various carton images
• Cartons don’t need to be flattened
