EH Series ValvesThese valves (figure 1) are specially designed forhigh-pressure applications. Fisher EH valveconfigurations incorporate proven techniques inflow-stream contouring for higher capacities and invalve trim design for reliability in severe applications.
The temperature limits of EHT valves can beextended above 232C (450F) by using PEEK(PolyEtherEtherKetone) anti-extrusion rings incombination with a spring-loaded PTFE seal. ThePEEK anti-extrusion rings expand to close off theclearance gap between the plug and the cage wherethe PTFE seal may extrude at high temperaturesand pressures. The temperature limits are extendedto 316C (600F) for non-oxidizing service and to260C (500F) for oxidizing service.

Features Improved Cage Design—Drilled-hole cages,
offering excellent strength and additional resistanceto destructive vibration, are standard. Specialmaterials of construction are readily available.
O-ring Seat Ring Gasket Construction—Useof O-ring construction provides excellent shut-off withminimal seat ring installation torques fortemperatures up to 232C (450F). O-ringconstruction is standard on EHT valves. The Oringseat ring gasket construction is available forelevated design temperatures and/or NACEconstructions where a suitable Oring material is notavailable.
Increased Pressure/TemperatureRatings—Steel EH and EHA valves with buttweldingend connections have Intermediate StandardRatings. With nondestructive testing, these valvescan conform to ASME Intermediate Special Ratings, which allow even higher pressure/temperatureapplications. See tables 7 and 8 for specific ratings.
Long Trim Life—Hardened materials ofconstruction for the cage, valve plug, cage guiding, and other trim parts are standard for all applications, providing excellent wear resistance. In allapplications, rugged cage guiding providesincreased valve plug stability. Increased stabilityresults in reduced vibration and other mechanicalstresses, which contributes to long trim life.
Piping Economy—The availability ofexpanded end connections on EH valves mayeliminate the need for line swages whileaccommodating oversized piping arrangements.
Control of Low Flow Rates/Tight Shut-off—Micro-Form or Micro-Flute valve plugs (figure 6 or 7)provide superb rangeability in high-pressure,low-flow applications. A choice of several restrictedport diameters helps match valve capacity torequired flow, helps provide necessary control withfull travel, and helps prevent throttling near the seat.
For EHA valves only, and in low-flow applicationswhere cavitation damage may occur, the Micro-Flatstyle valve plug can be used. For low-flowapplications where cavitation damage may occurand the minimum required Cv is equal to or greaterthan 0.05, Cavitrol III with Micro-Flat trim can beused in both EH and EHA valves. Please contactyour Emerson Process Management sales office formore information.
For sootblower applications, a special trim design isavailable to address noise, vibration, tight shutoff, and thermal cycling which is seen in this application. Please contact your Emerson Process Managementsales office for more information.
High-Temperature, Class V Shutoff—Use ofthe metal C-seal (see figure 21) permits Class Vshutoff up to 593C (1100F) for up to 4-3/8 inchport. The metal Bore Seal trim will permit Class Vshutoff up 593C (1100F) for 5-3/8 inch ports andlarger.
Excellent Stem Sealing—HIGH-SEAL packingsystems provide excellent sealing to conserve

Long Thermal-Cycle Life—The seat ringdesign minimizes operational stresses, therebyreducing chances of distortion and resultant leakagecaused by temperature cycling. The hung cagedesign allows thermal expansion of the cage withoutaffecting the seat ring gasket loading.
Operational Economy—Balanced trimconstructions reduce forces acting on the valve plug, thus reducing actuator thrust requirements andpermitting the use of smaller actuators. This, combined with capacities higher than comparablypriced globe valves, makes the NPS 8 through 14(including 14x12 and 16x14) EH Series valves veryeconomical for high-pressure, high-flow service.Actuator selection for NPS 20 valves can be madefrom electromechanical or electrohydraulic stylesthat use readily available power sources.
Reliability—All aspects of the control valve(material selection, trim components, packing, andcontrol accuracy) are designed, built, and tested toassure performance and reliability. Extensivemetallurgical evaluation results in state-of-the-artcage, valve plug, and stem materials that helpensure trim life and dependable performance.
Control Accuracy—The NPS 20 cage andvalve plug deliver accurate control of high pressureand high capacity flow. Each cage has milledopenings and is flow tested for the required flowcharacteristic. With precise, accurate cage openings, accurate installed characteristics result; valves inparallel have the same flow at the same plugposition. The cone-shaped plug reduces fluidturbulence, helps ensure plug stability, and aidspositioning accuracy.
Easy Maintenance—The bonnet lifts off toallow trim access. The separate seat ring and cageallow parts removal and maintenance. The globeconfiguration reduces the uneven trim wear andresultant maintenance downtime normally associatedwith slant configurations. Installation with the stemvertical above the bonnet also makes trim removal andinstallation easy.

Control Flexibility—Special cagecharacterization (standard, Whisper Trim, orCavitrol trim) can be supplied to satisfy almost anycombination of flow and noise or cavitationabatement. Cage characterization and efficient flowpassages provide close control for low flow, high
pressure drop conditions as well as high flow, lowpressure drop conditions. A choice of actuator stylesallows wide selection of power and controlcapabilities.
NPS 1-1/2 x 1 through 6 Globe Valves NPS 3 through 8 Angle ValvesEH Series valves (figure 4) offer higher capacities, rugged cage guiding, hardened trim materials, andare available with special trims for noise attenuationand cavitation abatement. An EH valve package canbe created for specific service conditions from avariety of special features, including oversized ends, intermediate ratings, special trim materials, andspecial trim configurations.
Because of flow capacity and severe servicecapabilities, both EH and EHA valves are used formany high-pressure applications in processindustries such as power generation, hydrocarbonproduction, chemical processing, and refining. TheEHD (figure 5) uses a balanced valve plug and iswell suited for general applications where extremelytight shutoff is not required. The EHS (figures 6 and 7) has an unbalanced valve plug and providesup to Class V shutoff. The EHT (figure 8) has abalanced valve plug and offers up to Class V shutoffwith process temperatures below 232C (450F).
EHA valves--EHAD (figure 9), EHAT (figure 10), andEHAS--are angle versions of the EH valve. Trim isinterchangeable between an EH valve and the nextlarger EHA. For example, the trim used in an NPS 3EHD is the same size as (and is interchangeablewith) the trim in the NPS 4 EHAD.
EH valves are available in CL2500 ratings. EHAvalves are available in CL900, CL1500, and CL2500.Because these valves feature a thicker body wall, both EH and EHA valves are available withintermediate ratings. See the Features section in thisbulletin.
EHA valves provide many of the same featuresavailable with EH valves. One important feature isthe availability of special trims for aerodynamic noiseattenuation, for cavitating liquid service, and for sourservice.

These features, along withrugged cage guiding and hardened trim materials, make the EH Series valves reliable high-capacityvalves.
These valves are used for many high-pressureapplications in the power, process, oil production, chemical, refining, and other industries. The EHDvalve (figure 12) is well-suited to general applicationswhere extremely tight shutoff is not required, and theEHT valve (figure 14) offers up to Class V shutoff forapplications with relatively low processtemperatures.

Principle of Operation (NPS 8 through 14 Globe Valves)
EHD and EHT valves, shown in figures 12 and 14,are balanced valve designs. When the valves areopening or closing, pressure registers on top of thevalve plug through the balancing holes in the plug. The force of the pressure on top of the plugbalances the force of the pressure on the bottom ofthe plug to reduce the actuator force required.

NPS 20 Globe ValvesThe NPS 20 EHD control valve (figure 19) is a large,high-pressure, single-port, globe valve designed toclosely and dependably control high-pressure,high-temperature media in the power andhydrocarbon industries. For example, NPS 20 EHDcontrol valves are used in sliding pressure systemsto control high-pressure steam in fossil-fueled powerplants.
Advanced, yet successfully field-proven, the NPS 20EHD control valve usually incorporates special
design features to satisfy specific customerrequirements. For example, figure 18 illustrates aspecially characterized cage. Both Whisper Trimcage holes and large cage windows provide thecustomer-required flow characteristic. Additionally, the drilled Whisper Trim holes in the cage providenoise abatement.
Standard construction details such as thecone-shaped valve plug and stem assembly, separate seat ring, and HIGH-SEAL packingarrangement are also shown in figure 18.

Figure 20. Custom Design Sequence (NPS 20 Globe Valves)
Custom Design Capability (NPS 20 Globe Valves)Sliding pressure systems, as well as other controlsystems, have specific performance characteristicsthat require special control valve constructions. These special constructions must performdependably and provide accurate system operationand plant reliability.
As shown in figure 20, the basic NPS 20 EHD valveconfiguration can be designed to meet customerspecifications. Special cage characterization andactuator/valve response characteristics can bedesigned and then confirmed through exhaustivetesting and evaluation. Flow testing of these largevalves takes place at the Emerson InnovationCenter, Fisher Technology, the largest facility of itskind in North America.
The final control valve assembly provides reliable, dependable performance. This performance deliverscontrollability for not only the control valve but alsothe plant control system, sliding pressure orotherwise.

Figure 21. C-seal Trim
C-seal Trim DescriptionC-seal trim (figure 21) is available for valves withport diameters from 2.875 inches through 4.375inches.
With C-seal trim, a balanced valve can achievehigh-temperature, Class V shutoff. Because theC-seal plug seal is formed from metal (N07718nickel alloy) rather than an elastomer, a valveequipped with the C-seal trim can be applied inprocesses with a fluid temperature of up to 593C(1100F).
Bore Seal Trim Description
The Bore Seal design (figure 22) employs a variationof the proven C-seal trim with enhancements for usewith the larger port EH hung cage. In the Bore Sealtrim, the primary plug-to-seat interface is ametal-to-metal line contact while the secondarymetallic seal engages a controlled bore region in thecage when the plug is seated (see figure 22). Duringmodulation, the secondary seal does not contact theupper cage wall and the controlled bore regionremains protected, which extends the shutoff life ofthe valve.

Trim Selection Guidelines for NPS 1-1/2 x 1 through 6 Globe and NPS 3 through 8 Angle Valves
Please refer to the following descriptions as aguideline for the selection of appropriate trims:
Trim 49—Trim 49 is the standard trim for C12Avalve body materials and should only be used withC12A valve body materials. C12A should only beused when the pressure and temperaturecapabilities for WC9 valve body materials are notacceptable.
Trim 50—Trim 50 is the standard trim forcarbon steel and alloy steel body materials and isrecommended for general and severe serviceapplications up to 427C (800F). Typicalapplications for Trim 50 include services in water, boiler feedwater, non-sour hydrocarbons, and steam. The S41600 (416 stainless steel) heat-treated plugand seat ring have a hardness similar to CoCr-A(Alloy 6).
Trim 53—Trim 53 should be used in all hightemperature applications between 427C (800F)and 566C (1050F) unless chlorides are present. The presence of chlorides could lead to stresscorrosion cracking of the CA28MWV (422 stainlesssteel) cage.
Trim 54—Trim 54 is the standard trim forstainless steel body materials. It should be usedwhere hard-faced trim is specified.
Trim 54 should not be used in boiler feedwater dueto amine corrosion problems associated withCoCr-A.
Trim 56—Trim 56 should be used for sourservice.
Trim 57—Trim 57 should be used for boilerfeedwater service when limits exceed thosespecified for Trim 50.
Care should be taken when specifying this trim insmall sizes for applications where chlorides arepresent due to stress corrosion cracking problemswith S44004 (440C stainless steel).

Material Selection GuidelinesPlease use these numbered steps as a guideline forthe selection of materials:
1. Determine the pressure/temperature rating of thevalve size and material required. Inlet pressure andtemperature must always be limited by theapplicable ASME pressure/temperature rating.
2. Select the desired valve style from the AvailableConfigurations specification and from the shutoffclassifications listed in table 10.
3. Select desired materials from tables 11, 12, 13,and 14 and figures 24, 25, 26, and 27. The
temperature capabilities determined from figures 24,25, 26, and 27 may be further limited by thetemperature capabilities of materials selected fromtables 11, 12, 13, and 14. Refer to figures 24, 25, 26,and 27 to determine pressure drop limits of thebody-trim combinations selected.
Inlet pressure and temperature must always belimited by the applicable ASME pressure/temperature rating. Contact your Emerson ProcessManagement sales office for special materials fortemperatures exceeding the following maximumlimits: EHD valve [593C (1100F)] and the EHTvalve [232C (450F)].

Installation
The valve must be installed so flow through thevalve matches the flow direction arrow on the valvebody. Consideration should be given to installing anupstream strainer, especially if the valve uses amulti-orifice Whisper Trim III or Cavitrol III cage.
For NPS 8 and larger valves, the recommendedinstallation position is with the valve in a horizontalpipeline and the actuator vertical above the valve.Other orientations may result in shortened trim lifeand difficulty with field maintenance.
Overall dimensions are shown in figures 28, 29, 30,31, and 32. Face-to-face dimensions are incompliance with ANSI/ISA-S75 for valves smallerthan NPS 8. For NPS 8 and larger valves,face-to-face dimensions are longer than industrystandards for valves of this size and rating. Actualend connection dimensions conform to ASMEB16.25 for buttwelding ends and to ASME B16.5 forflanged ends.

SpecificationsAvailable Configurations
See table 1.
Common Characteristics: EH valves aresingle-port, high-pressure, globe-style valves withmetal seats, cage guiding, and push- down- to-close valve plug action. EHA valves are angleversions of EH valvesEHD/EHAD: Uses a balanced valve plug(1) withgraphite valve plug piston rings; also, see tables 3and 4.EHS/EHAS: Uses an unbalanced valve plug. Forlow-flow applications, smaller valve sizes areavailable with specialized valve plug designs. Seetables 3(1) and 4.EHT/EHAT: Uses a balanced valve plug(1) with apressure-assisted PTFE valve plug seal ring; also, see tables 3 and 4.

1. In flow up applications only, NPS 6 to 14 EHD and EHT and NPS 8 EHAD and EHAT valves are available with a diverter cone valve plug construction to provide increased stability for higherpressure drops. See figure 11, 16, and 27. Diverter cone valve plug construction is also used for NPS 6 EHD and EHT and NPS 8 EHAD and EHAT applications requiring Whisper Trim III LevelA, B, or C cages. Again, for flow up applications only.2. EN (or other) ratings and end connections can usually be supplied; please consult your Emerson Process Management sales office.3. The pressure or temperature limits in this bulletin and any applicable standard limitations should not be exceeded.4. Modified equal percentage characteristic is equal-percentage for the first 90% of travel, then quick-opening for additional capacity.5. EHS may be used for flow down in special cases. Please consult your Emerson Process Management sales office NPS 1 and 2 valves with Micro-Form plugs can only be used for flow upapplications6. O-ring seat ring gasket construction is preferred where temperature allows and is standard for EHT valves. See table 13 and figure 25.7. For temperatures above 204C (400F), the following CF8M (316 SST) valves must be derated: NPS 8 and 10 ASME Special CL1500 or 2500 valves; NPS 12 and 14 ASME Standard orSpecial CL2500 valves. For more information, contact your Emerson Process Management sales office.8. NPS 8 to 14 flow up for boiler feedwater service with pressure drop greater than 69 bar (1000 psi) when a diverter plug is used.9. Valves using an equal percentage cage may be traveled an additional 13 mm (0.5 inch) if desired to obtain additional capacity; flow characteristic becomes modified equal percentage.10. H indicates heavy actuator-to-body bolting.
