Dear St. Andrew Catholic School Families,
At St. Andrew Catholic School, we believe that spiritual and academic growth is a lifelong process so in order to prevent the summer
slide, here is the expected summer assignments for your child.
First, you make ask, what is Summer Slide?
Summer Slide is what happens when the skills students learn during the school year are lost or forgotten over the summer. When kids
do not practice their reading skills during the summer months, they can fall behind by the time school starts again. Summer may be
winding down, but it is not too late to polish up those reading skills in time for August!
Why is it so important to prevent Summer Slide?
When children do not read over the summer, they can fall two years behind by 5th grade. We believe that teamwork leads us to our
goals so it is always important to support your child’s learning at home, and over the summer is critical.
How can I prevent Summer Slide?
You can prevent the summer slide but making sure your child does the below assigned summer assignment for their grade level. Do
not let your child wait until the last minute but read or do a portion of their assignment daily in order to keep their brains thinking.

Dear Parents, Did you know that when kids read over the summer they are likely to leap ahead when they head back to school? It’s called the “Summer Leap”, and our school has made it a priority to keep our students’ skills sharp by encouraging them to read all summer long. Scrapbook
-Use a photo album or make your own scrapbook out of construction paper and ribbon. Select photos from magazines, old family
photos, and drawings and scrapbook decorations that depict the following items from your story: main characters, settings, main
idea, author’s purpose, climax, finale and best chapter in your book. Add a brief summary on every page.
Create a collage to represent the book.
Your collage should have at least 10 photos or illustrations.
Write a key describing each item on the collage.
Create a board or card game about the book.
The game should include details about the setting, characters, and plot to show knowledge
of the book.
Include instructions about how to play.
Create an illustrated timeline showing important events from the book.
