Well it!s that time of year thatwe remind everyone to be firesafe. Changing the batteriesin our smoke detectors, watch-ing for trip hazards in thehome, checking our heatingappliances for debris-dust-per-formance, making sure every-one knows how to get outduring an emergency andknowing CPR – being readyfor that emergency. Our de-partment strives to remind ourcommunity of the importanceto be ready for an emergency. We have started home inspec-tions; where we will go overyour home and point out thosethings that need attention.
At our Safety Carnival wewill have a puppet show for the
children showing them thatmatches are tools and nottoys; what to do if they hearthe smoke detector at home;and that firefighters will alwaysbe there when they need them- day or night.
Young or old, we all need toknow the basics of first aid,Cardio Pulmonary Resuscita-tion (hands free or not), whatto do when a fire starts, who tocall when there!s an emer-gency at home and when to letan adult know when some-thing is wrong.

Sparky says: “Don!t Play with Fire!”
I-40 & Horizon Blvd., Milan, NM
My father was a fireman.
He drove a big red truck
and when he’d go to work each day
he’d say “Mother, wish me luck.”
Then Dad would not come home again
‘til some time the next day.
But the thing that bothered me the most
was the things some folks would say,
“A fireman’s life is easy,
he eats and sleeps and plays,
and sometime’s he won’t fight a fire
for days and days and day’s”.
When I first heard these words
I was too young to understand
but I knew when people had trouble
Dad was there to lend a hand.
Then my father went to work one day
and he kissed us all goodbye
but little did we realize
that night we all would cry.
My father lost his life that night
when the floor gave way below
and I’d wondered why he’d risked his life
for someone he didn’t know.
But now I truly realize
the greatest gift a man can give
is to lay his life upon the line
so that someone else might live.
So as we go from day to day
and we pray to God above
say a prayer for your local Firemen.
He may save the ones you love.
