Aalto University’sresearchgrouponArcticandMarineTechnologyisstudyingthebehaviorofshipsandstructuresbothinopenwaterandinareascoveredbyseaice.Theworkislinkedwiththedesignandoperationsofpassengervessels,icebreakingshipsandArcticmarinestructures.Itfocusesoniceloadsonshipsandstructures,shipperformance,shipsafetyandicemechanics.Furthermore,theresearchonopenwatershipsincludesworkonadvancedstructures,hydrodynamicsaswellasriskandsafety.

Established in 2005asaspin-offofAkerYards(theformerWärtsiläHelsinkiShipyard),AkerArctichastheaccumulatedicebreakerdesignandconstructionknowledgethattheshipyardanditsdesigndepartmenthavegatheredsincethe1950s.AkerArctic’spastreferences,bothastheshipyard’sArctictechnologyresearchunitandasanindependentengineeringcompany,includemorethanhalfoftheicebreakersbuiltworldwide.Todaythecompanyisinvolvedinmostofthehighiceclassprojectsthatareonorderorunderdevelopmentaroundtheworld.
AkerArcticpridesitselfonbeingaforerunnerinicebreakingtechnologyandcanclaimanumberof“firsts”intheworldoficebreakers.Inthe1950s,thecompanyestablishedanewstandardforBalticescorticebreakerswithtwobowpropellersanddevelopedthefirstlargediesel-electricpolaricebreakers.Theconstructionofonesuccessfulicebreakerclassafteranotherforbothdomesticandforeigncustomersledtotheperfectionofthevariousdesignfeaturesandsystemsthataretypicaloficegoingvesselstoday,suchastheAC/ACdiesel-electricpropulsionsystem.Bythelate1980s,AkerArcticwasresponsibleforconstructingtheonlynuclear-poweredicebreakersbuiltoutsidetheSovietUnionandRussia.Morerecently,AkerArcticdevelopedseveralstate-of-the-articebreakersfortheirclients,includingtheconceptfortheworld’sfirstLNGpoweredicebreakerfortheFinnishgovernment.

Rauma Marine Constructions Ltd. (RMC)wasfoundedin2014tocontinuetheshipbuildingtraditionsinRauma.ThisnewbeginningmarkstheculminationofcenturiesofshipbuildingexperienceattheRaumashipyardwhich,undervariousowners,hasbuiltupavastamountofknowledgeinnavalarchitectureandtechnologicalinnovation.Specifically,thisknowledgecomesfrombuilding,upgradingandoverhaulingspecializedvessels,includingallFinnishmulti-purposeicebreakers,largeborderguardpatrolvessels,andallFinnishNavysurfacecombatantssince1991.
