Coherence

o a clear and effective controlling statement o a controlling statement that is presented explicitly in the introduction as a thesis statemento relevant supporting ideas based on the support outlineo supporting ideas that are organized in a logical wayo a conclusion that again expresses the controlling statement

Language

o an appropriate tone considering my purpose and audienceo adjectives that express what I want to say without being general (avoiding words like “good” or

“bad”)o a variety of terms (I have used a thesaurus or synonyms to avoid monotony)

Unity

o paragraphs that directly support my main ideao thoughts that connect to my purpose in each paragrapho no ideas that seem to be unrelated to my topics because they are another topic altogethero transitional words or phrases that lead my reader (like a map – see transitional phrases sheet for

reference)

Emphasis

o a repetition of that main idea in every paragrapho repetitions only of key words and ideas

Support

o explanations, definitions, examples, illustrations or facts that prove my statement or convince my reader

Sentences

o a variety of simple and more complex sentenceso correct sentences (I have revised my paper to avoid incomplete thoughts)
