U.S. Marines and Japan Self-Defense Force personnel conducted a bilateral search and
rescue exercise at the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Hijyudai Training Area, 27 April, 2021. The participating units included: Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 232, Marine Aircraft Group 12 and Ashiya Air Rescue Squadron, Air Rescue Wing (Ashiya).
The bilateral exercise allowed U.S. and Japanese forces to quickly and effectively carry out search and rescue operations, as well as refi ne communications between various organizations.
The event started with two pilots placed at separate locations in Hijyudai Training area to simulate realistic conditions after an emergency ejection from an F/A-18 aircraft. The simulated downed pilots then used their issued survival radios to communicate with each other and a wingman aircraft fl ying overhead.
âI loved being able to talk to one of my fellow squadron pilots as they were overhead looking for me,â said Captain Daniel Tolbert, one of the simulated downed pilots during the exercise. âI couldnât stop thinking about how much more diffi cult this would be if I had really ejected and sustained injuries. I can imagine how uplifting it would feel to hear one of your own squadronâs jets overhead and hear your friendsâ voices on the radio.â
After following a set of standard reporting procedures, all the necessary information was given to the Ashiya Air Rescue Squadron to arrange for recovery of the simulated downed pilots and follow-on transportation back to MCAS Iwakuni in a Japanese UH-60 helicopter.
Captain Nicholas Rowell, the other simulated downed pilot, commented on his experience with the Japanese Air Rescue Squadron saying âI thought communications with the aircrew would be diffi cult, given the language barrier, but they made the process easy to understand and were able to quickly extract us from the training area.â
On board the Japanese UH-60 helicopter, the pararescuemen performed medical checks on the pilots and began transporting them back to MCAS Iwakuni for follow-on treatment, which would signal the end of the exercise.
En route to MCAS Iwakuni, the Marines and Japanese pararescuemen shared in conversation and exchanged uniform patches as a sign of good will.
âThe Japanese PJs were absolutely amazing,â said Tolbert, using an acronym for âpararescuemenâ. âWe were so impressed by their professionalism and how seriously dedicated they are.â
While speaking with one of the pararescuemen, who had decades of experience in search and rescue operations, Tolbert mentioned that âthere was an emotional moment for us when the PJs told us they are very sad whenever a pilot goes down and to be careful. I have lost friends in jet mishaps so it really hit me hard.â
When asked about their overall experience, both pilots commented on the boost in confi dence they gained in their equipment and training as well as the reinforced trust they have in Japanese forcesâ search and rescue capabilities.
âI have a lot of trust in my peers and the Japanese if we had to do this for real,â said Tolbert. âIt made me realize that almost every day I trust my life to my friends and international partners.â

U.S. Marines from 5th Air Naval Gunfi re Liaison Company (ANGLICO) traveled from Okinawa
to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni to conduct close air support training with Marine Aircraft Group 12 fi ghter jets. The training allowed 5th ANGLICO Marines to test Link 16 network systems while communicating with aircraft and becoming more profi cient using their equipment.
ANGLICO is a liaison unit specializing in coordinating artillery, naval gunfi re and close air support. During the training evolution, U.S. Marines with 5th ANGLICO focused on the close air support training with F/A-18 Hornet aircraft from Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 232 and F-35B Lightning II aircraft with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 242.

Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, on May 9, 2021. The arrival of these aircraft is part of an ongoing transition process to a 5th generation squadron capable of supporting a wide range of mission sets across the Indo-Pacifi c region.
Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 242 was re-designated on Oct. 16, 2020, as part of the Marine Corpsâ ongoing transition process from legacy F/A-18 Hornet aircraft to the newer 5th generation F-35B Lightning II. Marine Aircraft Group 12 received the fi rst forward-stationed F-35B squadron in January,
2017, when VMFA-121 was relocated to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan. With the addition of VMFA-242, MAG-12 is now the only overseas unit with two permanently stationed F-35B squadrons.
The F-35B is the ânext generationâ aircraft and represents the future of USMC tactical aviation. U.S. Marines with Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD)
conducted an improvised explosive device (IED) exercise aboard Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni, Japan, May 19, 2021.
EOD is responsible for the construction, deployment, disarmament, and disposal of a myraid of explosive hazards. This particular exercise was designed to allow EOD to utilize a robot in their arsenal, which allows them to engage explosives at a greater distance with no harm to Marines.
âWhat we do here is considered the highest level of training,â said GySgt Unberto Rangel, an EOD technician with MCAS Iwakuni EOD. âIf we are not careful - if we donât pay attention - we get hurt. Itâs a very dangerous job.â
âWe have to pass our experience down to the junior Marines because once weâre gone that knowledge is gone. You can read about it, but if you donât actually do it hands-on, itâs hard to develop those skills,â said Rangel.
Rangel said that MCAS Iwakuni EODâs mission consists of regular training throughout the year to prepare for any possible scenario. Their skills arenât often called upon in real-world scenarios, but in order to maintain a high level of technical proficiency, EOD conducts practical application training every week.
âThe most challenging aspect to our job is ensuring the safety of everyone involved,â said Chief Warrant Officer Andrew Russell, the officer in charge of MCAS Iwakuni EOD.
Safety is considered one of the highest priorities when it comes to
their field. During the exercise, the Marines kept tabs on everything and everyone in the surrounding area, making sure pedestrians were clear of the danger zone and Marines participating were conducting procedures properly.
âWe have to be ready every time we go on a mission,â said Russell. âOur skill set is extremely perishable. There are many ways to build a mousetrap, and our job requires us to identify, assess, and mitigate that particular mousetrap, but itâs all going to depend on the creativity of the bomber. Our job is to understand the construction of that device.â
Every EOD Marine has their own way of disarming devices. With a collection of old and new techniques suited to a variety of scenarios, there isnât a wrong or right way to get the job done. As long as safety stays a priority, Marines are able to think outside the box to complete the mission.
âTraining helps the newer Marines build their logic trees (an organizational tool that EOD techs use to diagram all possible causes of a failure event),â said Russell. âI purposely have my Marines develop these training scenarios to enhance those logic trees, because every situation is different. But through experience and education, you can model your logic tree to get to a solution faster.â
When describing the benefit of team-driven exercises, Russell stated, âI like to play out the role-playing aspect because it adds to the human dimension. It adds more frustration
[and] potential for things to go wrong. I would rather have my Marines experience that here in these scenarios and get used to it, than out there where someone could get hurt.â

Avenger-Class Mine-Countermeasures ship USS Patriot (MCM-7), forward-deployed to Fleet
Activities Sasebo, Japan, arrived at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni for a scheduled port visit May 12, 2021.
Patriot previously visited MCAS Iwakuni in 2007. The base also hosted Oliver Hazard Perry class Fast Frigate USS Rentz (FFG-46) in 2010, and the harbor was later used for the fi rst offl oad of Japan Ground Self-Defense Force V-22 Ospreys delivered to Japan in May 2020.
As the only Marine Corps installation with an organic port facility and as host to Marine Aircraft Group 12 (MAG-12), Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5), and Fleet Air Wing 31 (FAW-31), MCAS Iwakuni is uniquely postured to provide advanced naval integration in support of regional security and the US-Japan alliance.
âWe embody bilateral naval integration at MCAS Iwakuni,â said Col. Lance Lewis, the air station commanding offi cer. âOur support to the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and the Japan Self-Defense Forces is second to none, and our commitment to regional security is demonstrated by our integrated operations.â
During the visit, Sailors from Patriot enjoyed activities provided by Marine Corps Community Service, including a friendly game of softball against air station personnel.
Patriot is assigned to Mine Countermeasures Squadron 7, operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with partners and serve as a ready-response platform for contingency operations.

Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni served as
a major seaport of debarkation for ORIENT SHIELD 21-2, the largest annual bilateral fi eld training exercise (FTX) in Japan between the U.S. Army and Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) that focuses on multi-domain operation and cross-domain operation, on 24 June 2021.
MCAS Iwakuni aided in the debarkation of over 100 rolling stock and the roll-off of four Army AH-64 Apaches. The Apaches were towed off, made safe for fl ight, and then took off from MCAS Iwakuni to conduct the rest of the exercise. The logistical movement demonstrated MCAS Iwakuniâs ability to serve as both a sea and air port of debarkation.
This yearâs Orient Shield marks the 35th iteration of the annual Japan-based exercise, which began in 1985, and is comprised of
approximately 1,400 U.S. personnel and 1,600 JGSDF personnel. The FTX is being executed through the battalion-level, with participating units focusing on tactical operations to improve their skills and ability to operate hand-in-hand with Japanese forces. Some units will participate remotely, refi ning their ability to operate in a geographically distributed environment, in order to further mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
During the exercise, participants will exchange ideas, tactics, techniques, military experiences, and cultural information. The exercise is designed to enhance U.S.-Japan combat readiness and interoperability while strengthening our bilateral relationship, demonstrating U.S. resolve to support Article V of the U.S.-Japan security treaty and the security interests of partners and allies in the Indo-Pacifi c region.

Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni was excited and honored to join the City of Iwakuni
as they hosted the U.S. Womenâs Olympic Fencing and Softball Teams prior to the start of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The U.S. Womenâs Olympic Softball Team arrived in Iwakuni, Japan on July 5th, and the U.S. Womenâs Olympic Fencing Team arrived on July 13th. Both teams were greeted by Marine Corps Col. Lance Lewis, the air station commanding offi cer, and senior city leaders, including Iwakuni City Mayor Yoshihiko Fukuda and Deputy Mayor Tadashi Sugioka.
Both teams lodged on board MCAS Iwakuni and took advantage of the facilities offered, like Kizuna Stadium and the Lotus Cultural Center, as they prepared to take on the Olympic Games.
MCAS Iwakuni coordinated closely with the city to ensure that U.S. athletes and their support teams were provided ample opportunities to train while minimizing their risk of exposure to COVID-19. As such, members of the on-base community and city residents were able to enjoy exhibition softball games, fencing practices, and a number of various exchange events.
Tokyo was selected as the host city for the 2020 Olympics during the 125th International Olympic Committee in 2013, however, the 2020 games were postponed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is the second time that Japan has hosted the Summer Olympic Games, and the fourth time hosting the Olympic Games overall. The 2020 games also mark the fi rst time that competitions such as 3x3 Basketball, Madison Cycling, and Freestyle BMX have been included.

The Impact Iwakuni award was created to recognize those who contribute to our community and improve the livelihood of dependents, contractors and service members alike and aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan. The recipients are nominated by fellow community members through a survey website and chosen by the award panel that meets after the survey closes.

U.S. Marines with Aircraft Rescue and Firefi ghting (ARFF) at Marine Corps Air
Station (MCAS) Iwakuni conducted a training exercise aboard MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, April 30, 2021 in order to maintain fi refi ghting readiness.
ARFF is essential to ensuring the safety of air station personnel, mitigating damage done to equipment and aircraft during emergencies, and the MCAS Iwakuni mission as a whole. âThe role we play at MCAS Iwakuni is that we support the squadrons and all aircraft, as well as all airfi eld operations, to sustain our air combat element,â said Cpl. Kristopher Garner, a fi refi ghting specialist with ARFF. âWe have emergency personnel ready 24/7 for when things go wrong.â
Training, as for all Marines, is an essential piece of sustained mission accomplishment for the Marines at ARFF. Their job consists of being at the ready at a momentâs notice due to the unpredictable nature of the emergencies they respond to. âThe hard part of the job is learning about the different procedures for each aircraft on base in case there was ever a mishap,â Garner said.
Every month ARFF Marines conduct training exercises to ensure they retain essential knowledge to effectively fi ght fi res that may occur aboard the air station. According to Pfc. Chad Butler, a fi refi ghter technician with ARFF, âthe most challenging thing is all the knowledge that comes into this job. We need to know specifi c things about each aircraft in order for us to safely get in there and help the pilots in case they were ever stuck.â
Even with the extensive amount of training at ARFF, Marines still fi nd the job enjoyable. âI really like training the new Marines,â Garner said. âOne of my favorite things to do is pass down the knowledge that has been passed down to me from my NCOs before me.â Butler also said that his favorite part of training is extinguishing fi res in the training pit.
When asked what advice he would give to Marines interested in this MOS fi eld, Butler said, âI would tell Marines to make sure that this is something that you love, that youâre not afraid of fi res, not afraid of working hard, and understand itâs something that youâve got to really be dedicated to.â
