FACIAL FILLERS and INJECTABLESAs we age, our skin becomes more susceptible

to wrinkles and sagging. Sun exposure, gravityand years of muscle movement (i.e., smiling, chewing, and squinting) also contribute to tissuebreakdown and loss of elasticity of the skin.Fortunately, there are many innovative, cosmeticprocedures that can help ease this aging processand sustain one’s youth.

Facial fillers are some of the most popular andeffective non-surgical options that are available toachieve a more youthful look. These are alsoknown as “dermal fillers” and “injectables”. Theyare all FDA approved and found to be quite safe. There are two main classes of injectables. One typeis Botox, which prevents tiny muscles of the upperface from excessive movement which createunwanted creases and lines. The results take up toa week to finalize. All the rest of the injectables, listed below, are used to fill out depressions, creas-

Radiesse® (formerly known asRadiance): This is a synthetic dermal filler madeof calcium hydroxyapatite. It is used for the correc-tion of moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. Thisinjectable is longer-lasting (up to a year or longer)because the body forms collagen around themicrospheres; adding bulk to the injected areas.

Evolence®: One of the newest. Porcine (pig)collagen derived; non allergenic (does not requireskin test). This may last close to a year.

Collagen (Zyplast/ Zyderm): A soft-tissuefiller made from purified cow skin (bovine)Collagen injections are losing their popularity asthey require a prior skin test and do not last longas the other injectables.

The main difference among these treatments isthe length of time they last and how much theycost. A qualified doctor can help to determinewhich facial filler will provide the most optimaland cost effective rejuvenating results for a givenperson.

es or scars or to enhance one’s lips (hence thename “fillers”). These results are immediate.

Injectables are administered through a few tinyinjections on specific areas of the face with the aidof topical or local anesthesia so there is minimaldiscomfort. The procedure is done in an office set-ting and usually can be performed at the time ofthe initial consultation.

Injectables require minimal downtime, allow-ing patients to return to work and their normalactivities directly following treatment. For the first24 hours, you may be instructed to refrain fromstrenuous activities and avoid excessive sun orheat exposure.

These are the most popular injectables avail-able in the United States:

Juvederm: Made of a hyaluronic acid gel, anatural substance found in skin. It is designed tocorrect moderate to severe facial wrinkles andfolds.

Botox Cosmetic®: As a derivative ofBotulinum toxin type A, Botox ® temporarilyblocks unwanted muscle movement.

Restylane and Perlane®: Both are non-animal, biodegradable gels composed ofhyaluronic acid.
