Scheme (YASS)

Introduction
• It is an Open University module.
• Gives able post-16 students the chance to study at a higher level without leaving friends and family behind.
• Study fits around school work and social lives, encourages independent learning and builds confidence.
• YASS is designed to bridge the gap between school and full-time university and help able and motivated students stand out from the crowd.
Step 1
• Check out the OU website on http://www8.open.ac.uk/choose/yass/
Step 2
• Check out available courses on http://www8.open.ac.uk/choose/yass/modules-available /
• Choose either a 10 or 15 points module NO MORE!
• Click on the course link to find out if you can still register on it.
NB: Registration deadline for some courses has already past.
Step 3
• Write a letter of application to Mr Ahmed stating the following:– List 3 courses (in order of preference, numbered 1, 2 & 3). If no more
places left on first choice, then will be given a place on the second, etc.)
– Why you want to do the course.– Convince him that you have what it takes to do the
course alongside your A-level studies.• Are you an organised, independent learner?• Can you handle the workload?!
– Include 2 referees: (telephone & email)• 1st referee must not be a friend or relative e.g. GCSE
Teacher.• 2nd referee must be a relative e.g. Parent.
Step 4
• Construct a professional CV and send it to Mr Ahmed along with your letter.– must include all your qualifications
• GCSE’s and grades achieved• Any other qualifications

Alternatively you can hand it in to the front office. Address the envelope to: Mr F. Ahmed, Co-ordinator or Curriculum Enrichment

Step 5
•Wait for the call!!– Only successful applicants will be
contacted by Monday 26.09.2011.
–Mr Ahmed will arrange a provisional booking for you on a your chosen course.
Step 6
• A meeting will be called after school (date tbc) to fill in the Open University application form.
• YASS contact will be invited to school to speak to successful applicants about the courses, pastoral support and more.
• Students officially enrol and start on their chosen course.
Reminder! [important dates]
• You will pay the full amount for the course to the university and once you pass the course, the school will help you claim it back.
• Must hand in or email your CV & letter of application by Thursday 22.09.2011 at 15:00
• Maximum places available: 5
• Successful applicants will be informed either by telephone or in person by Monday 26.09.2011.
