What is Extinction?
Extinction is the end of a species. Extinction begins the moment the last member of a
species dies. Extinction has mostly been natural or due to the
natural course of life on the planet. Recently, through the actions of mankind, other animals have become extinct as well.
Levels to Extinction.
Conservation Status. The conservation status is a level a species
may be found at. The are several status levels.

Examples of Extinction
The Passenger Pigeon One flock could contain 3 million birds. Extinction occurred because the birds were hunted for
meat, and deforestation/development of the US south. Last living bird “Martha” died on Sept. 1, 1914.

The Dodo Bird Once found by explorers around 1550’s they were hunted
for meat by the explorers their crew, the crews animals, and vermin brought by the explorers.

The Quagga is a relative of the Zebra. It was found on the African plains, similar in appearance to the
Zebra, but the stripes didn’t cover the animals middle. The Quagga had been hunted to extinction for meat, hides, and to
give more grassland to livestock. The last wild Quagga was probably shot in the late 1870s, and the last specimen in captivity, a mare, died on August 12, 1883,
