M2 Chemistry and Physico-Chemistry ofMaterials
PRESENTATION
The selection and appropriate use of a material requireschemical expertise that draws on knowledge of the materialpreparation and characterization sectors, and training ininterpretation and modeling of the structural and functionalproperties of materials.
Designed specifically for students taking courses in whichchemistry is the predominant subject, the CPCM (Chemistryand Physical Chemistry of Materials) curriculum offers trainingcourses in each of these different sectors.
The content of the teaching program is the result of a generalsynthesis concerning sustainable development and the useof innovative materials that provide a potential response tonew requirements and challenges related to energy and theenvironment.
The teaching program, comprising lectures, supervisedand practical work and case studies, is taught by universitylecturers and researchers, but also by personnel from the socio-professional sector.
The practical works and case studies are done in thelaboratories of the Multidisciplinary Research Institute for theEnvironment and Materials (IPREM CNRS UMR 5254), usinghigh-performance and top-level apparatus.
The program also includes modules that prepare students forentering the labour market:

Master degree "Bio-Inspired Materials"PRESENTATION
This master’s degree aims at offering an educationalbackground connecting the laboratory environment and theliving world while responding to the ecological and sustainabletransition challenges. Mimicking strategies elaborated byNature represent infinite scientific and technological challenges. These challenges will be taken up through bioinspiration andbiomimicry angles keeping in mind environmental awarenessand ethics.
We offer our students a unique opportunity to explore and getinspired from living systems to develop novel materials. Ourbiomimetic approach focuses on cross-disciplinary courses thatwill make students reconsider how they elaborate syntheses, formulations and processing of tomorrow’s materials as neededby the industrial partners to build our future society
In both the first and the second year of the master, the studentswill be trained to draw inspiration from Nature through abiomimetic approach. This multidisciplinary approach, whichresorts to both fundamental science and materials engineering,is based on the observation and comprehension of livingorganisms within their ecosystems. To succeed in this course, students will have to grasp abstract concepts to designbiological models adapted to scientific and technologicaldevelopments.
The teaching program, comprising lectures, supervised andpractical work and case studies, is primarily centered aroundstudent-based teaching strategies including Project-basedlearning. Entirely in English, teaching is performed by universitylecturers and researchers as well as socio-professionalstakeholders. The practical works and case studies takeplace in the laboratories of the Multidisciplinary ResearchInstitute for the Environment and Materials (IPREM CNRS UMR

TESTIMONIES
Corinne NARDIN
Corinne is physics professor, with a specialization in thephysical chemistry of polymers, at the Université de Pauet desPays de l’Adour. She is a scientific officer of the excellenceinitiative– Science - Innovation - Territoires – Economie (I-Site)« Energy and Environment Solutions – E2S ».
The training during the BIM Master will be focused on activepedagogy, in the project mode, which will be possible owingto a unique location of the teaching and research activities.Lectures will be at first organized to harmonize the basicknowledge of students of various educations (biology, physicsand chemistry). 50 % of the lectures delivered to the 15students are specific to the BIM master.
Through this approach, we further expect to develop thestudent’s soft skills in particular: encourage autonomy, stimulate curiosity, creativity andemotional intelligence. The principal objective is to train futureyoung researchers granted with a peculiar ability to thinkin a collaborative mode and to drive bio-inspired researchprojects.”’.
Laurent BILLON
Professor in Polymer Science at the Université de Pau et desPays de l’Adour, Laurent is vice director of the Institute of

Analytical Sciences and Physical chemistry for Environmentand Materials (IPREM). He is the coordinator of the Europeanresearch project eSCALED on artificial photosynthesis andleads the group on bioinspired materials ‘Functionality &Self-Assembly’.
The BIM Master, that stands for Bioinspired Materials, is in linewith the current challenge of the ecological and sustainabletransition. Mimic strategies evolved by Nature represents infinitescientific and technological challenges that will be undertakenby choosing bioinspiration and biomimetism.
With this master, unique in France, we aim at proposing to thestudents to explore living systems to get inspiration to developnovel materials and to keep in mind ethics and consciousnessof their environment. Multi- and trans- disciplinarily training, atthe heart of the biomimetic approach, will enable the studentsto adopt new ways of thinking syntheses, formulations andprocessing of tomorrow materials needed by the industrialpartners to build our future society.’’.
