What can be done about a street that�had a name that now doesn’t have�one? This is not a small, insignificant�connecting Street, it is a major�connecting Highway that has been�de-named, now waiting for a new one!�The Old Bunbury Road, between�Lake Clifton and North Coolup, 26.5�km suffered major surgery when the�new Forrest Highway, sliced it in half,�ending up with two Old Bunbury�Roads, creating havoc amongst�frustrated tourists, delivery persons,�Emergency Services and the Postal�Service. The Waroona Shire recently�ran a competition to re name the road�between the Forrest Highway and�Lake Clifton 5.3 Km, using only the�four names suggested by the Shire.�The LOCAL choice is Lake Clifton�Road. (not on offer by the Shire).�Proposal 1 KULARDA Road -�Peppermint Tree�Proposal 2 WONNIL Road - River�Swamp Gum�Proposal 3 THROMBOLITE Road -�Ancient Rock Formations�Proposal 4 No change�No announcement has been made but�for my two bob’s worth:�Old Bunbury�Road- West�, just about nails it! The�Old Bunbury Road� was the original�track between Perth and Bunbury,�known then as just the Bunbury Road,�
long before the South West Highway�(1890 when the railway came) and the�Old Coast Road. The rest area, at�Peppermint Grove, was established�before the 1870's when building of�hostel/lodgings/change rooms and�bathhouse (added later for the�'executive' traveller) were first�established by John Foreacre�(�Foreacre Street)�, the foundations�today can still be seen at the highway�end of Peppermint Grove Road. This�area was the Horse Team change for�the Stagecoach, Cobb & Co., who�operated the Southwest service on�behalf of the WA Government. The�service was unreliable as coaches�would typically wait at Perth or Bunbury�until they were full or had passengers�(which would sometimes take several�hours) and then depart. A team of tired�horses pulled an English-built coach�which was designed for short trips on�cobbled roads, bumped and jolted its�way over bush tracks. In bad weather,�services stopped altogether because�tracks were so overused and boggy�making them impassable. During winter�it was not uncommon for horses to�stand up to their bellies, or coaches up�to their axles, in wet sand. The hard�limestone around Peppermint Grove�area, was a welcome relief for teams to�easily stop and start.�

The�Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults�(RCIA) is a process in which�interested adults gradually become�members of the Roman Catholic�Church. Becoming a Catholic is a big�step. It is literally a life changing�experience and one which should not�be entered into lightly. There are�several stages and ritual steps in the�RCIA process. COMMUNITY SPORTING AND RECREATION FACILITIES FUND (CSRFF)�
2015/16 FUNDING ROUND�
The Dept of Sport and Recreation (DSR) are seeking applications from incorporated,�not for profit community groups for financial support through the CSRFF.�Through the CSRFF funding program, the State Government provides financial�assistance to community groups and local governments to develop basic, sustainable�infrastructure for sport and recreation. The program aims to increase physical activity�and participation in sport and recreation and is an incentive for the rational�development of good quality, well designed and well utilised facilities.�There are three types of grants and these are Annual Grants, Forward Planning�Grants and Small Grants. Further information on the criteria and guidelines can be�obtained by contacting the Dept of Sport & Recreation (Peel Office) on Telephone�(08) 9550 3100 or on their www.dsr.wa.gov.au�Applications for Small Grants are required to be submitted to the Shire of Waroona�for assessment and endorsement before 31 July 2014. WAY OF LIFE�The Apostle Paul�
wrote some�wonderful words�to a Church in�
Rome many years�ago and told them�“therefore, being�made right with�
God by faith, we have peace with�God through our Lord Jesus.”�What a privilege to have such peace�through faith, which is a total trust in�Christ. If we trust Him we not only�have “peace with God,” but also we�can experience the “peace of God”�which shall “keep your hearts and�minds through Christ Jesus.” Yes,�He is able to care for us as we live�our life and look to Him in every�situation.�He does this because, as the Apostle�went on to write,�“the God of Peace�shall be with you.”�May we echo some�of the words of the�hymn writer which�say; ‘only trust�Him,only trust, only�trust Him now!!�

I have a little Satnav, it sits there in my car.�A Satnav is a drivers friend, it tells you where you are.�
I have a little Satnav, I’ve had it all my life.�It’s better than the normal ones, my Satnav is my wife.�
It gives me full instructions, especially how to drive.�“It’s sixty miles an hour,” it says, “You’re doing sixty five.”�
It tells me when to stop and start and when to use the brake�And tells me when it’s never ever safe to overtake.�
It tells me when a light is red, and when it goes to green.�It seems to know instinctively, just when to intervene.�
It lists the vehicles just in front and all those to the rear�And taking this into account, it specifies my gear.�I’m sure no other driver has so helpful a device.�
For when we leave and lock the car, it still gives it’s advice.�It fills me up with counseling, each journey’s pretty fraught,�
So why don’t I exchange it and get a quieter sort?�Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, makes sure I’m properly fed.�
It washes all my shirts and things and keeps me warm in bed!�Despite all these advantages and my tendency to scoff,�
I only wish that now and then, I could turn the bugger off.�

Dear Editor�So the Waroona Shire has decided�there will be no green waste or verge�pick-up this year. Over the years they�have decreased the number of tip�passes and I am now waiting to see�what, if anything, they will do for�Senior Citizens, because at the�moment they do nothing. I recently spoke to a�Council officer and he stated that we�always picked up the minutes at the�office and that the Council minutes�are also on-line.�People need to know how the Council�is running the Shire. Editorial Comment�I�t�was extremely pleasing to receive the letter from Dorothy. The fact that she took the time to write�to me whilst in Palliative Care means a lot to me. Dorothy is one of the original Committee�Members of the Waroona Community Newsletter and until recently when she was taken ill, was an�active member of the Drakesbrook Despatch. We all wish her well.�Receiving the letter from Carol Mason has made me think a great deal about the implications of�the Shire’s decision to cancel the verge pick ups. Personally I will not be affected, as I have my�own Ute and regularly take green waste to the tip and use the 5 free Tip passes I receive from the�shire to dispose of my rubbish. (I am told that residents in the Mandurah area have to pay every�time they visit their local tip) Many residents, however, do not have access to a trailer, or Ute and�are now going to have a problem disposing of their unwanted goods and rubbish. Perhaps this is�something the Waroona Lions could consider as a project, or even just a group of Community�Minded Volunteers. Maybe the Despatch could print a list of volunteers who are prepared to call�and pick up your unwanted goods and take them to the tip, using your tip pass. This is just an�idea. Maybe there are other ideas and suggestions. Let me know what you think and we can get�the ball rolling. If Carol is disappointed and disgusted, I am sure there are many more of you.�In answer to Alan’s letter regarding Council minutes, in theory I have no problem with it, but the�length of the minutes would be a concern. We do pay for printing, so several pages of minutes�would not be of interest to many residents. Winter has well and truly arrived and�we have had some heavy rains in the�past week. The worse problem was�the gale force winds on Tuesday 17�th�
June and it took three large inner�bricks, a post and four bits of timber�and a heavy piece to metal to keep the�blue tarp protection in place to�safeguard the chooks. I am still�waiting patiently for my friend Robert to�complete my chook shed which is�badly needed, particularly at this time�of the year. It is half completed on his�veranda at present. Patience is a good�virtue. Consequently I am still putting�in fresh hay every three or four days�depending on the weather to ensure�the Eccles have warmth and dry�bedding. They must be content as�they are still laying six or seven eggs�daily and Penny the celebrity Wyndotte�X D’Uccle is still contributing every�second day. Thanks to the departure�of the wild birds my chooks are eating�more grain and this is reflected in the�quality of production. In the last two�
Chooks, Chooks and More Chooks�weeks we have closed off the entrance�to the Atrium as we discovered a�secret nest and five eggs which were�destroyed. Their free range time has�also been put back to mid-afternoon.�Boots, the family cat is still chasing that�elusive mouse and supervising when I�am attending the chooks. Leo the�other family cat is too busy catching�lizards and other prey and now walks�with a permanent limp after being�clipped by a car a couple of months�ago. The treatment plan by Ron the�local vet and staff was first class and�much appreciated. Prior to the heavy�rain I was raking loose hay into four or�five piles and the chooks love�dismantling the hay all over that yard�and looking for that elusive treasure.�They are better than a plough. After�the heavy rain “Wally’s Orchard”�especially the new lime trees will�continue to benefit from the mulch�residue and natural fertiliser. I�attended the Waroona Poultry Show�as an observer last Saturday and�enjoyed viewing the Poultry and Birds�on display. Laurie, Kath and John plus�other helpers were kept very busy. As�I am new to the poultry club my�services were not required and I�quickly departed to watch my beloved�“Fremantle Dockers” take on�Richmond Tigers and finish with a 20�
point win to consolidate a spot in the�top six of the AFL.�Waroona Poultry Club missed the�services of hardworking Secretary�Kellie Derosa for the Poultry Show and�last week Kellie and husband Paul�Derosa celebrated the arrival of a son.�Congratulations to them and especially�the proud Grandparents. Chickens are�sure to be among the family pets�raised by the Derosa Family. I am still�receiving positive comments regarding�the chook articles and time to attend�chookyard daily chores.�Ken “Chookyard Farmer”.�

Following recent�media attention about an infestation of�wheel cactus found in Dowerin, a�member of the public reported a�similar infestation in Yarloop to the�Department of Agriculture and Food�(DAFWA), whose officers quickly�
removed it. The cactus has also been�found in the Shires of Goomalling and�Kellerberrin thanks to local people.�Another example of early detection�being crucial to controlling a pest is�the citrus gall wasp, first found in WA�last year. Currently it appears to be�confined to a small area. Vigilant�orchardists and backyard growers can�assist in preventing the insect�expanding its range, simply by�spotting the tell-tale signs and letting�DAFWA know. Report any sightings�of wheel cactus or symptoms of citrus�gall wasp presence, described in this�month’s column, to the Pest and�Disease Information Service (PaDIS).�Ring Freecall 1800 084 881 or email�[email protected]�Wheel of misfortune�In South Australia 35,000 hectares of�the Flinders Ranges are contaminated�by wheel cactus (�Opuntia robusta�).�Residents of WA’s south-west are�urged to keep their eyes open for this�invader, as it would thrive in this�region. Birds eating the fruit spread its�seed in their droppings.The bluish�green segments or ‘pads’, up to 40�cm in diameter, are circular,�
tree may experience dieback. The�presence of this insect is indicated by�distinctive woody galls up to 250 mm�long and 25 mm thick on the twigs of�citrus trees. These galls can contain�hundreds of larvae. The adults�emerge any time from mid-September�to early November. So far DAFWA�has only found a few galls the size of�peanuts. Owners of citrus trees�should be checking their trees now for�evidence of the gall wasp so that�there is time to carry out control�methods, if needed, by August to�prevent the adults from emerging and�breeding. The movement of young�infested trees is the most frequent�way of introducing citrus gall wasp to�new areas. DAFWA’s surveys in�areas around the initial infestation�suggest the insect has not spread any�further afield. However, the whole�metropolitan area is being surveyed,�with attention being given to�commercial and wholesale nurseries,�and DAFWA has advised the local�citrus industry of the detection.�

With�some home gardeners interested in�eating cacti fruit it should be pointed�out that one species (�Opuntia ficus-�indica�), known as the edible prickly�pear or Indian fig, is allowed to be�grown south of the 26�th� Parallel.�However, it is not an ideal plant for�the backyard. Its prickles can harm�children or pets. Also it can host fruit�fly and needs to be managed�appropriately.�Signs of citrus gall wasp�Native to eastern Australia, the citrus�gall wasp (�Bruchophagus fellis�) is an�exotic pest in WA. In 2013 a small�outbreak was detected at Eden Hill, a�suburb north-east of Perth. Citrus�trees infested by this gall wasp can�suffer reduced leaf production and�lower fruit yield. Winter is certainly here! As the rain�and cold weather settle in over the�next couple of months there are a�number of things you will need to�keep on top of. If you haven’t already�done so now is the time to check�dams, water courses, tanks, drains,�gutters and roofs. Dams and water�courses can become contaminated�with faecal matter, debris and even�chemical run off during winter rains.�By checking to see if they are all�working correctly, you can minimise�flooding problems when more�significant rain is received. Also by�inspecting for blockages, damage,�rust or other problems you can expect�to capture all the rain to come without�incident. Too many times we forget�that safety should be our number one�concern. In Australia in 2013 there�were 59 farm deaths reported and�17% of these were children. Quad�bikes and tractors are the main cause�

We have seen plenty of dogs lately�that have ingested rat poison. In most�cases this has been accidental with a�packet left out or a cupboard door not�closed. Unfortunately it is one of the�
most common poisonings we see and�we have seen way too many lately!�
Most rat bait products are anti-�coagulants. The way they work is to�interfere with the animal’s ability to�clot their blood and therefore�eventually cause uncontrolled�bleeding and death.�Some rat baits are worse than others.�1�st� generation poisons such as�Warfarin (Ratblitz) require repeated�ingestion or a very large ingestion to�cause an issue as they are short�acting. 2�nd� generation poisons such as�Brodifacoum (Tomcat, Talon) usually�only require a single ingestion of a�small amount to cause a problem (in�some cases as little as a gram) and�cause problems for a long time as�they are long acting.�Unfortunately unless you have seen�your pet eat the bait there are no�initial signs of toxicity. You will only�start to see clinical signs of toxicity�

These�animals can become gravely ill very�quickly and at this point you may not�be able to save them.�So whatever you do – LOCK UP�YOUR RAT BAIT. If you have baits�out ensure that it cannot be knocked�down by rodents to end up in reach of�pets. Also beware that in some cases�your pet eating a mouse that has�eaten bait is enough to cause toxicity.�So if in doubt, get your pet checked�out by your vet.�

And the worst news is the�antidote can be quite costly for the�larger dogs due to how much of it they�require and for how long.�If you haven’t seen your pet eat rat�poison the first sign of a problem is�usually that the animal will become�lethargic (due to anaemia). Quite�often the gums will go pale (white)�and in the end stages may even�appear blue if your pet is bleeding into�their chest and struggling to breathe.�Bleeding into the chest or abdomen is�very common so if your pet’s�abdomen becomes distended or they�seem to take more effort to breathe�(usually while standing with their head�

As a first time�President of the�Waroona Bowling�and Social Club�Inc., may I firstly�thank the�members for�electing me into�
this role. The turnout for the Annual�General Meeting was excellent and�the new committee has some�outstanding talent and energy which�will ensure that the Club has a�successful year in 2014 / 2015. I must�say that I am very proud of our�committee and members of the�Waroona Bowling and Social Club�Inc. as to date I have witnessed�people helping out. Whether it be in�the kitchen, helping out behind the�bar, gardening to ensure our Club�entry and the surrounds of our�synthetic green has plenty of colour, it�is a talking point amongst the local�and visitor Bowlers to the Club. The�Friday night meals has been growing�from strength to strength, to Kim�Johnson and her team of helpers�
Waroona Bowling and Social Club Inc.�the management committee with a�proposal that we will be able to utilise�to apply for appropriate funding�assistance. This will be the Clubs�fund raising focus until this becomes�reality. During the winter months,�weather permitting lawn bowls�continues and if you would like a�game either as an experience bowler�or a person who would like to try their�hand at lawn bowls. We have social�bowls on Thursdays and Saturday�afternoon. If you are interested please�feel free to drop into the club and we�will ensure that you get a game as we�have many sets of spare bowls in the�locker room.
