Standard vs. Extended MUT for Delta™
Delta™ is the fourth generation of double shoulder connection developed by Grant Prideco™. As
part of the connection development cycle, customer feedback regarding past connections as well
as lessons learned were incorporated. There was a concerted effort to create a product that
meets customer demands for performance while being easier to operate, and providing a
reduced total cost of ownership. Grant Prideco recognizes there are limits to rig capabilities and
any new product offering must be usable without substantial investment while having the ability
to support the needs of future wells.
Delta has been designed with a standard maximum recommended make up torque (MUT) which
is provided as a part of our documentation when ordering. The standard maximum MUT is at or
slightly above those seen on most XT™ connections with the same OD and ID. This provides
existing rigs the ability to transition from one connection to the other without making a
substantial investment. Grant Prideco does recognize however that wells of the future, and even
some existing challenging wells now, do require a maximum MUT above those seen with XT
today. As such Delta, by default when purchased, can utilize an extended MUT to further increase
the product torque output but makeup to this level is not required by default.
An example is shown below for reference:
For Delta™ 544 6.625 x 4.0 (130,000 psi tool joints)
Standard Maximum MUT: 50,300 ft-lbs with 1.0 friction factor
Extended Maximum MUT: 58,700 ft-lbs with 1.0 friction factor
Both the standard and extended MUT values can be adjusted as well. Please note the maximum
friction factor allowed is 1.15 which yields the below results:
Standard Maximum MUT: 57,800 ft-lbs with 1.15 friction factor

Extended Maximum MUT: 67,500 ft-lbs with 1.15 friction factor
This option of a standard and extended MUT provides users confidence to purchase a product
which will support them now and in the future. Please contact Grant Prideco for more details
