Just for the Month of
August!!
Our Summer Days Party
with Tom Calvin has been
changed to the 1st
Wednesday August 1 at
11:30.
Let each one of us make a promise, that as long as we live, we will be good citizens of our country in the best of our capabilities and we will help America grow into a better nation with each passing day.
As we celebrate Labor Day, we honor the
men and women who fought tirelessly for
workers' rights, which are so critical to our
strong and successful labor force.
Elizabeth Esty
"The crickets felt it was their duty to warn everybody that summertime cannot last for
ever. Even on the most beautiful days in the whole
year – the days when summer is changing into
autumn – the crickets spread the rumor of sadness and
change."

Welcome Summer! I hope this newsletter finds everyone well. There are many events going on
this summer. Please come out to Community Day in the Park. Our center will be selling Pulled
Pork and calling Bingo. Our Americana Jubilee Party is July 11th with George Bruneio and the
Summer Daze Party with Tom Calvin is August 8th. Volunteers are a vital part of our Center and
we can always use volunteers, especially Meals on Wheels drivers. We thank those who already
give many hours to the Center. Please, remember to say Thank You to our Men and Women of
our Military. Without them where would we be? Happy 4th of July!
Sara Kelly Manager
Hi everybody, I hope you are all having a great summer. Remember to watch the extreme heat. It’s been up in the triple digits last week, and that can get very dangerous. Make sure the house is cool enough for you to withstand the dangerous heat. Our center is chugging along with the help of all our volunteers who come out and take time out of their lives and schedules to help us. I want give a shout out to Gloria Brunell and Jane Mood and sometimes their husbands Rich and Bob for a great job they are doing in the thrift shop. Linda Smith has been out for a number of weeks with shoulder surgery, and we are happy she is well and back with us. She was missed. Sara and Jim,
on top of all they already do, filled in and had to work extra hard to fill in the gap. Linda usually calls bingo. I volunteered to fill in for her. I never played bingo in my life, and I found out that it’s not as easy as I thought. In the beginning it was learning things like, there is no N when you run the special layer cake game. And boy the players let you know. When an N came up, I didn’t know what to do with the balls, so I put them on my lap. Before long, they began to accumulate and some fell on the floor. As the balls were bouncing, the people thought it was funny and soon I learned what to do. Linda should know that her job in calling bingo is not in jeopardy. I will be taking you down memory lane, playing your kind of music for the next few months. I hope to see you at the party enjoying the music and dancing. HAVE A GREAT SUMMER

Mosquito Bites . . .
Are annoying and
itchy bumps on your arm or behind
your eyes. Try to avoid the outdoors
during dusk and dawn, that’s their
peak biting times. Mosquito bites will
appear red, raised bumps on your
skin. Worse, they’ll itch. They will go
away in less than a week. You should
keep the area clean, use an ice pack
or a cool compress to alleviate
itching, take an antihistamine, or use
an anti-itching cream, such as
calamine lotion.

THE SUNSHINE SINGERS CHORUS
We are still looking for more singers to join the
“Sunshine Singers”, the centers chorus. Most of our songs
are the old standards and we sing them in unison, so you
don’t have to read music, and you’ll never get a second
soprano part to sing by yourself, or an alto part that has
completely different words than the sopranos are singing.
The only qualifications are that you are a senior (55+) and
that you enjoy and have fun singing. Practices and
performances are on Wednesday Afternoons (Usually) .
This is your invitation and you can just show up or call
(215)538-8671 for more information.
See our schedule above.
“Summer romances begin for all kinds of reasons, but
when all is said and done, they have one thing in
common. They’re shooting stars, a spectacular moment
of light in the heavens, fleeting glimpse of eternity, and
in a flash they’re gone.”
A retired man who volunteers to entertain patients in
nursing homes and hospitals went to one local
hospital in Brooklyn and took his portable keyboard
along. He told some jokes and sang some funny
songs at patients’ bedsides. When he finished he
said, in farewell, “I hope you get better.” One elderly
gentleman replied, “I hope you get better, too.”

The Importance of What We Do
Being Part Of Our Community
1. We are still a collection site for the Food Pantry. At this time, pasta and sauces are needed. Please buy a second
something on sale and drop it off here. They also need canned and packaged goods that won’t spoil.
2. Eyeglasses are still being collected and given to the Lion’s Club.
3. Tabs from pop top cans (soda, tuna, cat food, etc.) are being collected for the Ronald McDonald House, which shelters
families of children who are seriously ill or injured. We give them to the Women’s Club who takes them to a McDonald’s
repository.
4. Both our choral group “The Sunshine Singers” and our band “The Impossibles” go to different nursing homes and
assisted living facilities to entertain those residents every month.
5. Please bring in any post-marked stamps to the front desk. We collect cancelled stamps, and they are given to
the Blind Association.
6. The V.A. Clinic in Allentown has a little coffee room available to patients while they wait for their appointments. They
need sugar, tea bags, artificial sweeteners and stirrers.
7. We are now recycling our used papers and newspapers at our Center. The Milford Volunteer Fire Dept. has a dumpster
in our parking lot. Please feel free to use it.
8. We are collecting pennies for Cancer Research. Please bring your pennies and loose change in to help.
9. We are sending gift boxes to our Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. We need more donations to fill our boxes.
10. We help support Quakertown’s Fourth Of July Fireworks Display with our Bingo-In-The-Park and selling Pulled
Pork Sandwiches at these 2 fundraising booths.
11. Our Volunteers distribute our newsletter throughout the Upper Bucks Area.
Find Out What’s Going On In Your Community . . . And Then Get Involved !
Development of our Mission Statement: The core principles that guide us are compassion, volunteerism, fellowship and
action. We exist to provide services and support, using fundraising to support our programs. We provide Information and

55+ in the broad community of Upper Bucks County, as well as community business and groups that support our goals.
We also provide a clean, safe and healthy environment for all to enjoy.
“This project is funded, in part, under a contract with the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and the County of Bucks.”
Without community service, we
would not have a strong quality of
life. It’s important to the person who
serves as well as the recipient. It’s the
way which we ourselves grow and
develop. . Volunteers Are The
Backbone Of Our Center ! . . . .

A Brief History of Labor Day in USA
Compared with other celebrations, Labor Day is the quiet day. There maybe a few students using this as an opportunity for a last fling before knuckling down to the Fall term, but for most people, Labor day is just a welcome day off work. America has celebrated Labor Day on the first Monday in September since the 1882. The original idea was to have a street parade to show off 'The strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations'. When Labor Day was first proposed people worked 12hr days. Later, Labor day featured speeches by prominent men, it's true to say that these had a mixed reception, compared with the enthusiasm for a day off work. In the 21st century politicians never miss the chance to plug their policies, especially in Presidential election years. While the first Labor day was originally held on a Tuesday, it was soon realized that the first Monday was a better day for this day of
relaxation. Principally because we get a long weekend.

Safety And Efficiency In Our Kitchen
Why access to the kitchen has been frowned upon?
A commercial kitchen can be a dangerous place for slips and falls!
Thank you for your understanding
Our first day at a resort my wife and I decided to hit the beach. When I went back to our room to get something to
drink, one of the hotel maids was making our bed. I grabbed my cooler and was on my way out when I paused and
asked, "Can we drink beer on the beach?" "Sure," she said, "but I have to finish the rest of the rooms beforehand."

Thanks To Bucks County Transport!
Thanks to all the drivers. They do an excellent
job bringing our members safely to our Center
every day! They are all friendly and they show our seniors the
respect they deserve.
Thank You, Sara
Shop At Redner’s Supermarket
And Save Your Register Tapes!
Redner’s Supermarkets are donating a penny to our
Center for every dollar that you spend at their store. If
you would like to help us this way, pick up a Redner’s Pump Perks
Card. Even if you have an old card, you have to fill out an application
at the store and get a new one. As you check out, the card will be acti-
vated. The words Save A Tape will be printed on your register receipt.
Save all of your register tapes and bring them in to us. Please do NOT
use any highlighter over the words. We send them in and then receive
our 1% donation to the Center.
