DixieBoysBaseballInc.hasgrownfromahumblebeginningin1957toathirty-five-thousandplusparticipantbaseoftoday.Thispublicationisintendedtoprovidehighlightsfromthe2011seasonaswellasofferusefulinformationforthe2012season.
DixieBoysBaseballwasprimarilydevelopedasaprogramforboys(13-14).Itwasrecognizedthatyouthgraduatingfromotherbaseballpro-gramsneededtobeabletocontinuetopartici-pateinsupervisedprogramsandespeciallyhave
theopportunitytocompetewithboysoftheirownageandskilllevel.Toenhancetheexperienceamediumsizediamondwasestablishedforthisagegroupandwithonlyminormodificationsthisprogramstillexisttoday.
Theprogramhasexpandedtoaccommodateplayersages13-19.TheBoysdivisionisnowcomprisedof13-14yearoldplayerswithtournamentplayforJuniorBoys(age13)andDixieBoys(ages13-14).TheMajorsdivisionincludes:playersages15-19withanintermediatedivisionfor15-16-17yearoldsnamedPre-Majors.Manyadditionalopportunitiesnowexistforparticipants.
ANationalBoardofDirectorsmeetsbienniallyandprovidescon-stitutionalgovernance.Dedicatedvolunteerservicehasbeenprovidedsincetheinceptionoftheprogram.Theorganization’sworthymissionisaccomplishedbyahard-workingvolunteerBoardthatsharesamutualgoal.
The2012seasonwillagainembracethestrongtraditionoftheorganization.Leaguesform,organizationalmeetingsareheldand,mostimportantly,thesoundof“PlayBall”isheardthroughoutanelevenstateregion.LocalleadershipandcommittedvolunteersattheDistrict,StateandNationallevelallowstheprogramtothrive.
DixieBoysWorldSeriesdivisioneventswillbeheldinChristiansburg,VirginiaandCovington(NewtonCounty),Georgia.ThePre-MajorseventwillbeheldinGuntersville,Alabama,whileLaurel-JonesCounty,MississippiwillserveasthehostfortheDixieMajorsWorldSeries.Localleagueplayistheprimaryfocusoftheprogram;howeverWorldSeriesparticipantsenjoytherewardingexperienceofcompetingatthehighestlevel.Thispublicationhighlightsthe2011WorldSeriesChampions,formerwinners,aswellasrecordsthatdatebacktothestartofchampionshipplayin1963.

DixieBoysBaseball,Inc.wasfoundedin1957atAlexandria,Louisiana.TheAlexandriaYouthBaseballAssociationwasthechartermemberofanorganizationformedtoattractthethirteen(13)yearoldplayer.Allotherprogramsinexistencein1957requiredthatparticipantsage13-15begroupedtogether.TheIncorporatorsrecognizedthatgroupingthirteen(13)yearoldswithyouthagefifteen(15)andplayingonaregulationsizediamondwasahardshipformostoftheyoungerplayers.Furthermore,thecreationoftheprogramprovidedanopportunityforplayerstocontinueparticipationaftercompletionoftheyoungerage(12&under)program.
TheIncorporatorsestablishedtheConstitutionandBylawsaswellastheDixieBoysRuleBook.TheoriginalConstitutioncalledfortheelectionofofficers.Furtherdiscussiondirectedtheformationofadditionalpro-gramswithinothersouthernstates.TheConstitution&Bylawsestablishedbythefoundingfathersisverymuchintacttoday.Theprogram’smissionofprovidingarecreationaloutletforasmanyyoungpeopleaspossiblecontinuestobetheemphasisandchargetotheBoardofDirectorsofDixieBoysBaseball.
DixieBoysBaseball’schartermembersallresidedinAlexandria,Louisiana.Twenty-three(23)chartermembersalongwiththeExecutiveOfficersconductedthebusinessofthecorporationatitsinception.Theprogramhadahumblebeginningwithseven(7)leaguesformedinthefirstyear;allfromLouisiana.Forthefirstthreeyearsoftheorganization,
DixieBoysBaseballonlyexistedinLouisiana.In1960,MississippijoinedwithLouisiana.In1961,Alabamafranchisedandotherstatessoonfollowed.Fromtheearlyyearstonow,DixieBoysBaseballhasexperiencedmuchsuccess.Today,DixieBoysBaseballoperatesineleven(11)southernstateswith1315teamsand450Boysleagues.Over24,000playersparticipatedinthe13-14yr.oldprogramin2011.
In1973,theNationalBoardofDirectorsofDixieBoysapprovedaresolutionthatestablishedanolderprogramforboysfifteen(15)throughseventeen(17)yearsofage.TheprogramwasnamedDixieMajorsBaseballanditexistedunderthedirectionofthecorporateofficers.Each
StateelectedrepresentativestogoverntheMajorsprogram.Intheyearstofollow,someminormodificationsweremadetoencouragegrowthoftheMajorsprogram.Fromitsbeginningin1973totoday,theprogramhasservedtheneedsofourolderyouthparticipants.The2011numbersreflect488teamscomprising180leaguesorroughly10,000participants.

In1975acommitteebeganworktoestablishanagreementwithDixieYouthBaseball(ages12&under).TheagreementprovidedforaservicecenterforDixieBoys&DixieMajorsheadquarteredatthesiteoftheDixieYouthoffice.TheNationalBoardofDirectorsofYouthandBoysBaseballapprovedtheagreementin1976withtheumbrellaorganizationbeingcalledDixieInc.
In1978,bymailinvote,theDixieMajorsBoardofDirectorsapprovedaresolutionaddingeighteen(18)yearoldstotheprogram.LocalleaguesweregiventheoptionofcreatingaPre-Majorsprogram(15-16yearolds)orcontinuingtooperateasaMajorsprogramtoincludetheeighteen(18)yearolds.ThePre-MajorsprogramsparkedevengreaterinterestintheolderagesDixieprogram.Participationopportunitieswereavailablewithseparatetournamentplayoffered,aPre-MajorsWorldSeries.
TheDixieBoysBaseball,Inc.Scholarshipprogrambeganin1984withasingle$500.00award.Theprogramhasgrowntoeleven(11)$1,250awards.EachoftheparticipatingDixiestateshasascholarshiprecipienteachyear.Astatecommitteerepresentativereviewstheapplicationsandmakesthetoughdecisionastotheawardingofscholarships.BernieVarnadoreofSouthCarolinaablyservedastheScholarshipCommitteeChairuntilhisdeathfollowingthe2006season.In2007,theBoardofDirectorsunanimouslyapprovednamingthescholarshipprogram:theDixieBoysBaseball“BernieVarnadoreScholarshipprogram.”
In1995,theopportunityforyouthagethirteentoparticipateintournamentplayasa13yearolddivisionofDixieBoyswasdiscussed.Regionaltournamentswereheldasapilotprogramandin1996thefirst13yearoldWorldSerieswasheld.The13yearoldagegroupinlateryearswasnamedJuniorDixieBoys.Also,a1995meetingresultedinthecreationoftheDixieNationalUmpireprogram.In2011,over1,100umpiresregisteredwiththeprogram.
Theyear2000ledtothedevelopmentofaDixieBoysDirector’strainingcourse.Atrainingmanualwasdevelopedandthefirsttrainingses-sionwasheldin2001.Onthebaseballdiamond,theDixieNationalteamwascrownedasthe2000TournamentofStarsChampionsinaneventheldinCooperstown,NewYork.TheworkingrelationshipwithMajorLeagueBaseball,USABaseball,andotheryouthorganizationswasgreatlyenhanced.TheCommissionerwaslaterselectedtoserveontheUSABaseballMedical/SafetyCommitteeandlaterelectedasamemberoftheUSABaseballExecutiveBoardofDirectors.
The2005Biennialmeetingresultedinanumberofpolicychanges.Thebiggestchallengeforthe2006seasonwastheuniversalchangetoanApril30thagecontroldate.DixieBoysalsoaddedarulechangethatallowed19yearsoldstoparticipateinDixieMajorsBaseball.TheRulebookwasdesignedforatwoyearprintingandtheMediaGuidebecameavaluabletoolforpromotingtheprogram.
2006wasaveryspecialyearfortheDixieBoysorganization.Fiftyyearsofprogramhistorywascelebratedthroughouttheseason.The
opportunitytovisitthebirthplaceofDixieBoysBaseballwasprovidedbyalocalorganizingcommittee.ADixieBoys50thAnniversaryCelebrationwasheldSeptember9th,2006inAlexandria.Ofspecialsignificance,theprogramfounderandthreechartermemberswereinattendanceatthecelebrationalongwithmanyDixieofficials.
Policyandrulechangeswereapprovedaspartofthe2007Boardmeeting.Outofconcernforthesafetyandwelfareoftheparticipant,DixieBoysBaseballimplementedarulechangethatestablisheda“pitchcount”todeterminepitchereligibilityasopposedtothelongstanding“inningspitched”rules.TheDixieFutureStarsevent,thecreationoftheAlumniprogram,andexpandedprogrampartnershipsallprovedtobesignificantaccomplishments.
The2008yearwasabanneryearforDixieBoysBaseball.TheDixieNationalteamcapturedtheGoldMedalattheUSABaseballTournamentofStarsEventheldinCary,NC.TheDixieFutureStarsEventwasexpanded.ContributionstotheAlumniprogrammorethantripledfromtheinaugural2007year.
TheBoardofDirectorsattendedabiennialmeetingin2009.Muchdiscussionwasheldinregardtohowbesttomarkettheprograminanever-changingyouthmarket.TaskForcecommitteeswereorganizedtoreviewplayeragegroupings,programexpansion,andminimumbidrequirementsforHost.ThefindingsofthecommitteesweresharedwiththeBoardandappropriateactionswereimplemented.
The2010seasonwasanexceptionalyear!ADixieBoys-brandedcatalogagreementwithJPSports,nowcalledPennant,wasdeveloped.FranchisenumbersshowedincreasesinDixieMajorsBaseballparticipa-tion.TheDixiewebsitewasvastlyenhanced.Theprogramhadanexcel-lentfiscalyear.
2011wasaverychallengingbutsuccessfulyearfortheorganization.DixieFutureStarseventswereheldforallfouragegroups.Thebien-nialmeetingresultedinmanysignificantchangesfortheorganization.AHallofFamewascreatedtohonorthosewithoutstandingcontributionstotheprogram.TheClassof2011includedonlyonemember,programfounderBubbaBrasher.
Rewardingexperiencesareavailableforyouth13andolderthroughthegameofbaseball.DixieBoysBaseballhasarichtraditionthatspansfifty-plusyears.Thelongevityoftheprogramisduetothecontinueddedicatedserviceofprogramvolunteers.TheBoardofDirectorsofDixieBoysBaseballInc.eagerlylooksforwardtoprovidinganotherhighlysuccessfulprogramin2012.

TheNationalUmpirecertificationprogramcreatedin1995hasgreatlyimprovedtheoverallqualityofumpiring.MajorLeagueBaseballplayingrulesareusedinmostinstanceswithafewexceptionsasfoundintheDixieBoys/MajorsRuleBook.UmpiresaretestedonknowledgeofthegameandbasedonexperienceandtherecommendationofDixieofficials,agoodnumberthatstartwithlocalprogramsadvancetovariouslevelsoftournamentplay.Theprimaryemphasisofanyumpireprogramshouldbetoprovidequalityumpiringatthelocallevel.Umpiresalsohavetheuniqueopportunitytoshowcaseskillsatdistrict,stateandWorldSeriestournaments.
BecominganumpireinaDixieBoys/Majorsprogramisreallysimple.Contactshouldbemadewithanumpireassociationortheleagueinthelocalarea.Eachlocalleaguehascompleteautonomyinchoosingofficialsthatwillworktheirprogram.DixieBaseballsupportsthelocalprogrambyprovidingaDistrict&StateUmpireinChief.TheUmpireinChiefconductsclinics,providescertificationmaterialsandadministersthestateprogram.SuccessfulcompletionofthecertificationprogramsallowsanumpiretobecomeregisteredwithDixieBoysBaseball.
Umpire Insurance Program added as a Service to Our Umpires
Beginningwiththe2012season,DixieBoysBaseballwillprovideaninsuranceprogramforumpires.AllumpiresregisteredthroughtheDixieBoysorganizationwillhaveapolicyof$100,000excessaccidentand$2,000,000generalliabilitycoverage.ThecoverageapplieswhileumpiringDixieBoysBaseballgamesaswellasotheryouthbaseballgames.Forquestionsortoreportaclaim,callSadlerSportsInsuranceat800-622-7370.

TheDixieBoysBaseballInc.Scholarshipprogrambeganin1984withasingle$500.00award.Theprogramhasgrowntoeleven(11)$1,250awards.EachoftheparticipatingDixiestateshasascholarshiprecipienteachyear.Atthe2007DixieBoysBaseball,Inc.Biennialboardmeeting,thescholarshipprogramwasappropriatelynamedthe“DixieBoysBaseball—BernieVarnadoreScholarshipProgram.”
Thevolunteerscholarshipcommitteecarefullyreviewsalloftheapplicationswithinagivenstate.Thecommitteehasthedifficulttaskeachyearofselectingawinner.Thescholarshipwinnerisoftenrecognizedataschoolhonorsorawardsceremony.WinnersarepresentedplaquesandDixieBoysBaseballsubmitsthe$1,250scholarshipproceedstothewinner’sschoolofchoice.
Qualifyingforascholarshipisverysimple.AnyplayerthathaseverparticipatedonaDixieBoysorMajorsfranchisedteamiseligible.Thereisabsolutelynorelationshipbetweenathleticabilityandthescholarship.Thefollowingcredentialsarerequiredontheapplication:substantialfinancialneed,scholasticabilityandevidenceofstrongschoolandcommunitycitizenship.Thescholarshippolicygiveseveryoneequalopportunityofselection.
TheDixieBoys,Inc.“BernieVarnadore”ScholarshipprogramisofgreatprioritytotheBoardofDirectors.TheopportunitytoawarddeservingHighSchoolSeniorsfinancialassistanceisoneofthemostrewardingaspectsoftheprogram.ApplicationsareavailablefromDixieBoysleagueofficialsandonlineattheDixieBoyswebsite.April1stisthedeadlineforanapplicanttosubmithisorherrequesttotheCommissionerforscholarshipconsideration.
