District 17-K has been working to set up goals and
objectives for the year. The main goal is gaining new members and retaining those we have.
If you would like to be part of this innovative group,
please contact your Zone Chair or any member of the District Governor Team.
The ideas that flow from these meetings are exciting
and important for us all.
DISTRICT 17-K LEADS THE WAY! Clubs throughout the District are making the
news again. Each of these clubs has found a
way to thank First Line Responders in their
communities. They are serving even if their
club is not actively meeting. Lions are thanking
those who are there to help whenever needed.
They are showing the world why everyone
needs Lions in their communities!
Did you get your Peace

ROARING World Sight
Day October 8th
Hello Lions,
What a great month for Lions. I am SO proud of everyone
who took part in the First Line Responder District-wide
Project! What an amazing project with everything going on
in our world right now. First Responders were thrilled to be
recognized and thanked for their service. Whether clubs
were meeting regularly or not, they made time to make this
happen. The idea of a district wide project is to Serve, to
Teach others about Lions and to Join Together as a united
front for all to see. Most of these clubs worked to get their
project in the local newspaper to bring awareness to Lions
Clubs and promote service and membership. If your club
has not done this yet, please consider taking part in this
project. It is truly one to remember.
Back by Club Demand is our District Leadership Conference.
We would like to offer this in person as well as by Zoom.
You do NOT have to have a Zoom account to join. Just click
the link and follow the instructions to get to the meeting. As
we get closer, we will make a final decision on in-person
training. If you attend via Zoom, you could always get
together as a club at home and have one computer to log
into the meeting. We will try to have breakout rooms for
discussion with all of your club members in the room with
you.
We will be going over new and innovating ways to gain
members, new service projects that do not involve close
interaction with large groups and will discuss the importance
of enthusiasm as a leader for club growth. Mark your
calendar today and please plan to take part in this
worthwhile conference and enjoy hearing ideas from other
Lions throughout our state.
On a very sad note, I did not visit any clubs in September
and my visits in November have been cancelled as well.
Being a DG that very much enjoys meeting the Lions in our
district and wanting to be there to help in any way possible,
this is a very difficult and sad time. However, I want to visit
only when clubs feel comfortable with the visit and will work
to keep all Lions safe in our district. If you would like me to
visit please call or send an email to [email protected].
I look forward to the time when I can get out to see each
one of you. My goal as DG was to be sure to visit every club.
This may not happen given our current situation but my
My fingers are still crossed that I can meet this goal before the
end of my year as District Governor!
World Diabetes Day is November 14th and I am very pleased
to report that the Hays Lions will be holding a Strides Walk in
the Hays Mall on that very day! The club plans to have
informational handouts, freebies and hopefully shirts for
walkers. The time is 10-4 so walkers can come and go to
eliminate a large crowd. Free will donations can be made to
support children who wish to attend Diabetes Camp. What a
great project! If any other clubs would like to hold a Strides
Walk, contact me and I will see what I can do to get you
promotional items as well.
Do you remember our Great Pancake Escape from last year?
2VDG Tom wants to do it again!! Are you having a Pancake
Day this year? If so, please let us know when and where asap
so we can make plans to attend!! As of this writing, the two
clubs we knew about with Pancake Feeds have both
postponed to keep their members and community safe. They
plan to hold their yearly event as soon as active cases decline.
Be sure to enter all your Service Projects into
MyLion – including First Responder Projects.
District 17-K has had the most service reported in
any District in Kansas and we want to continue that
trend. Great job Lions!!
I can’t wait to see the Peace Posters you all turn in this year!
I very much appreciated being able to take part in judging
posters with the Smith Center Lions last year. The number of
entries they had was amazing! If you need an extra judge or
just a cheerleader for a good cause – give me a call! Any
project with children is one that is near and dear to my Lion
heart.
I offer condolences to families who lost loved ones this last
month. District K had a few PDGs and spouses that passed
away. My heart is with you all.
Continue to be the cheerleader for your club. Offer
enthusiasm and ideas for new projects. YOU will make the
difference we all need.
Until we meet again, take care dear Lions.

Greetings fellow Lions.
I am pleased to see that so many clubs got involved in
our September service project. Even though many of
our clubs are not meeting yet, they have got creative to
honor our first responders. I am hoping that many clubs
will continue with our October service of vision. Our
own club has always in the past had a candy day where
we gave out either suckers or pencils at one of our
Dillons stores. We have decided not to do this with the
Covid worry this year. This has always been a good
fundraiser for us and for KLSF. We will just do some
brainstorming for something different this year. I love
that all of you are doing these service projects. It keeps
your club name out in the public so everyone knows that
we are still around and possibly gain some new
members.
I have just made one visitation so far this year. I visited
the Fort Larned Lions Club on September 21. I always
enjoy visiting this club. They are so active in their
community. I have always been amazed at their
Christmas basket project. I will be visiting with the
Downs and Glen Elder clubs on October 19. I am anxious
to get more visitations scheduled. I know some more
clubs are starting to meet again.
In these trying times a lot of meetings have gone to
zoom. Our next state council meeting will be on zoom
also. We have held many zoom meetings these past few
months getting prepared and hosting leadership
training. I do think that we will continue to have some
zoom meetings. I like the idea of having meetings both
in person and virtual. That way if members don’t have
the time to travel to the meetings they can still attend.
Myself, I do like the personal meeting. I hope some of
you were able to attend some of the virtual meetings of
the USA/CANADA FORUM. They had some good
sessions.
I am so pleased with all that DG Diana has been doing. If
we all could be excited about being a Lion and making our
communities a better place, then we would make her job
easier and make all of us feel better. It is so heart-
warming to be helping someone in need.
Let us all remember to report the service projects that we
do. Also be sure to JUST ASK to get new members. You
will never know if a prospect is interested in joining unless
you ask. Just think, with more members we can provide
more service. Remember your District Governor Team is
here to help.
Hoping to see many of you soon,
1st VDG Randy St. Aubyn

There are some schools that are asking Lions

willing to do the screening, give your schools a

having issues seeing.
Remember to send us pictures of your

Of course, our Lions safety comes first so
please follow the guidelines for safe

Day October 8th
Greetings Fellow Lions,
World Sight Day was October 8. This special day was
started by the Lions in 2000 and has grown to be the
most important date worldwide related to the
advocacy and communication of eye health. Please
consider doing a project related to Sight in October.
There are many things you can do such as collect used
eyeglasses, vision screen at a local school, or help a
needy person purchase eyeglasses.
October is also Lions Membership Growth Month. I
would encourage all the clubs in District 17K to plan a
membership growth event in October or November.
You can have fun with a membership contest by
dividing your club into teams and giving points for
bringing guests to meetings and for recruiting new
members. You can plan a club membership party and
invite friends and neighbors to learn more about the
great service your club is doing. Sometimes just asking
people to visit your club works as well.
Looking forward to next month, November 14 is World
Diabetes Day. Diabetes is one of the five worldwide
causes that Lions Clubs International encourages us to
support. I encourage all the clubs in our District to
plan a Diabetes related service project in November.
Two possibilities are a Diabetes Awareness event
and/or a Diabetes Screening Event. The LCI website
has materials that can be downloaded to support both
types of events. There is still time to organize these
projects. The Hays Lions are planning a Strides Walk
for diabetes awareness at the Mall on November 14. I
know other clubs are planning diabetes projects as
well.
On September 10 I visited the Hugoton Lions Club. It
was their first meeting of the Lions year and they made
it a social gathering. I had the honor of presenting
Lion Tommy Romero with a Melvin Jones Fellowship.
L-R: Tommy Romero, Treasurer; 2VDG Tom
Baumann; Rick Kates, President
Tommy is the club treasurer and has been a Lion for
over 38 years. Lion Tommy is very deserving of this
recognition.
Our next District Cabinet meeting is November 7 in
Hays at noon. We are planning another Leadership
Training for the same day. The training will start at
9:00 a.m. and we will have some new and
interesting topics that will help you make your club
meetings fun, keep your members engaged, and
provide great service to your community. More
details are forthcoming and will be emailed to you.
Yours in Lionism,

Teamwork…It Is Good For Your Health
Wolves do it. Dolphins do it. Canada Geese do it, and so do
Lionesses in the wild. What am I talking about?
Teamwork...they use teamwork to benefit the group. We
Lions (the human kind) can also benefit from working as a
team. There are multiple reasons to believe that teamwork
enhances health and well-being.
First, let me explain that the animals listed above team up
to get food, mainly, but also to take care of problems they
may face or long and arduous tasks that require
encouragement. You have heard the Canada Geese overhead,
and that honking usually comes from the leader who is
encouraging those behind in the V formation to keep flying.
That leader swaps places with another goose in time, and this
keeps them successfully headed to their seasonal feeding
grounds. Such cooperation is necessary to the well-being of
the flock.
In our Lions clubs, we want cooperation and often rely on
teams to put together ideas, how-to’s, and complete a
project. In addition to getting things accomplished,
teamwork also benefits our individual health, both physical
and mental.
The elements of good, successful teamwork include these:
communication, efficiency, support of each member,
delegation of duties, and generation of good ideas, which may
come from brainstorming. Did you know that when you
develop a new thought or take up a new interest like
learning to pay the piano or painting a picture, you are
growing new dendrites in your brain? Yes, that is true. Those
dendrites connect pathways to other dendrites and make
your brain healthier and stronger. A healthy brain is a must
for success and continued happiness in life.
So good communication is important in that it gives you
more ideas to think about and keeps the team on task or
aware of problems. Without good communication, a team
will surely fail. Communication also keeps us connected to
each other. If one does not communicate with those around
him, life gets a bit lonely, most likely. Lonely people seem to
expire earlier in many cases. Having good communication
between team members is like a splash of cool water on a hot
day - it makes one feel better.
Efficiency is important because teams burn out if nothing
ever gets accomplished. Teams make more and faster
progress than do people alone. There is an African proverb
which covers this: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want
to go far, go together. Teams want to get things done, and
they feel a real sense of personal and team accomplishment
when the job is done and success is evident.
Teams need ideas to be generated, and again, there is that
dendrite growing that everyone should be glad of personally.
Between team members, many ideas can be spoken and the
good ideas winnowed down to the very best, and then work
can begin. This is healthy for team members, as it gives
them some mental acuity in developing their ideas and then
working together to accomplish that goal. Sometimes, ideas
require physical activity - like working our pancake suppers
or working in a summer camp for hearing impaired children.
This is excellent for us, especially those of us who are retired
and more likely to be on the computer all day or “couch
potatoes.”
Another element that creates better health is delegation. If
one feels responsible for getting something accomplished for
the team, it makes him work and think and maybe do
physical activities that promote better health habits. One
thing I think of is walking from door to door...remember the
earlier broom sales that had Lions going out into the town to
get orders? If one is delegated that kind of responsibility, it
creates physical health opportunities. (Ulysses had one older
Lion in the distant past who outsold all the other members
combined...by walking and gathering broom orders like crazy.
He lived to a ripe old age and was a healthier man for this.)
Support of the team is important health-wise. Morale is
higher when teammates support each other and help each
other realize their goal. Another kind of support is between
teammates when one or more cannot get the assigned work
done. Help from others can be a morale builder, if one knows
he is not going to fail and is not alone. Good morale is
important for good health...both physical and mental. What
we think is what we live. Continued next page…………..
If you are part of a team, remember to cooperate,
communicate, and bring your best to the team. You will
benefit so many ways.

Hello, my fellow Lions, praying this finds you in good health
and Spirits.
As we enter the fourth month of this unique Lions year, I also
pray that your Lions Club is also in good health and spirits. It
has been a trying time for all of us, but we will survive this
Hundred Year Pandemic as the world survived the Flu
Pandemic of the 1918-1920.
The Multiple District 17 applied for and was granted and LCI

provided funding this year to support Membership efforts in
your clubs. The Multiple District also received a public
relations grant and the Multiple District is also helping fund
the Public Relations in the Kansas Lions Organization.
What does this mean to the Lions Clubs in Kansas? The
NAMI team in conjunction with the public relations
committee is dedicated to providing support to your Lions
Club. All you must do to receive this support is to ask.
For Lions Clubs with membership under 15 members, the
NAMI program provides 10 clubs in each district funding of up
to $200.00 to be used for marketing, recruitment, training,

The MD Global Action Teams have been busy in spite of the
pandemic. A big shout of congratulations to the Global Action

for Club Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers. The GLT
successfully designed the various learning modules that were
used. The zoom platform was used. District Governors and
trained presenters, PDG’s and experienced secretaries and
treasurers in their districts provided the trainings.
Services in the age of pandemic are being done in creative
ways. The Global Action Service Teams are collecting
information on the various projects that clubs provide. These
include financial support for causes in their communities,
making and providing facemasks, honoring first responders
and frontline workers, brightening the lives of those in care
facilities with plants, purchasing eyeglasses, collecting used
eyeglasses and when school began seeing that teachers had
emergency diabetes kits. These are just a few of the services
going on in Multiple District 17.
The Global Membership Team is involved with NAMI (North
American Membership Initiative). The focus is to recruit new
members, establish new clubs and revitalize existing clubs.
Some highlights of their efforts to date include 12 new
members for the Osage City Lions Club in District N. In District

In District K, work is underway to revitalize the Ellinwood Lions
