2. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
2.1 PROJECT BACKGROUND
There is no sewerage system existing in Dindigul town. Sewage disposal is primarily
through septic tanks. In general, it is discharged in to the open street drains. Some soak pits of
shallow depth and inadequate size are also in existence. These soak pits do not function properly
and thereby allowing the sullage overflows. The street drains carrying sullage and sewage, are
ultimately discharged in to water courses. Table 2.1 describes the salient features of the Dindigul
District.
The sewerage system will comprise of construction of 13.65 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant
of activated sludge process, laying of Trunk main sewer line diameter of 400 mm and 450 mm for a
length of 1.00 km and secondary/laterals for a length of 93.00 km in diameter ranging from 200 mm
to 500 mm. In the system one intermediate pumping station has also been proposed to pump about
4 MLD of sewage to be transported to a gravity sewer through a pumping main of diameter 350 mm
and a length of 650 metres. For house service connection it has been proposed 110 mm & 160 mm
diameter ODU PVC pipes (4 to 6 per manholes). The house service connection is provided
normally to the manholes, where 2 or 3 House Service Connections (HSC) will be to Road Side
Chamber (RSC) and RSCs will in turn be connected with manholes. Also provision has been made
in the cost estimate for dismantling cum refilling the septic tank / soak pit utilities for those who do
not find space for effecting a separate connection. The collection system is designed for the volume of waste water to be generated for the
projected population of 2023. Per capita wastewater generation is considered as 80% of the net
water supply. Peak factor has been considered to design the sewer lines.

2.3 PROJECT LOCATION
Location : Palapatti Village
Present Usage : Barren land
Area Available : 68.69 acres
STP Area Requirement : 1.89 acres
Total vacant area : 66.56 acres
Ownership : Dindigul Municipality
Dindigul is located at 10.35 N 77.95 E. It has an average elevation of 268 metres
(879 feet) MSL. The area is underlined by hard-rock and a drought-prone region. It is spread over
an area of about 14.01 Sq.Kmand is characterized by undulating topography with hills located inthe southern parts, sloping towards north and northwest. The highest elevation (altitude) in the hilly
area (Sirumalai Hill) is of the order of 1350 m MSL, whereas in the plains it ranges from 360 MSL in
the southern portions to 240 MSL in the northern part of the area. No perennial stream exists in the
area, except for short distance streams encompassing second- and third-order drainage. Run-off
from precipitation within the basin ends in small streams flowing towards the main river, Kodaganar.
2.4 PROJECT COST
The total project cost is estimated to be Rs.10.34 Crores (Detailed breakup is given in
Table 2.2) and the total operation and maintance cost is estimated to be 1.98 Crores (Detailed
breakup is given Table 2.3).

2.6 TREATED WATER DISPOSAL SYSTEM
Treated effluent is pumped through R.C.C pipes (300mm) of grade NP-3 about 16
manholes run in of size 30 m with intervals of closed conduits. There will be no major ecological
impact due to laying of treated effluent discharge pipe line and the treated sewage will be disposed
in the Kodaganar River after meeting the standards.
2.7 DETAILS OF SLUDGE & METHOD OF DISPOSAL
Disposal body : Kodaganar River
Direction : West to STP plant
Disposal point : At Palam Rajakkam Patty,Palani Road
Distance from the STP : 5 km
Treated Sewage Collection Tank : 1

Pumping Main Km : 6.36 Km (RM Colony to Project site)
2.0 Km (Parapatti to Project site)
Pipe line routing : The treated effluent is discharged through RCC
pipe to the final disposal point located at Palam
Rajakkam via Ponmandurai road, Madurai road
(towards Trichy) and Palani road.
Figure 2.6Shows thePipe line routing
Impact due to pipe laying : There will be no major ecological impact due to
laying of treated effluent discharge pipe line.
Storage and Disposal of Biosludge
The dewatered biosludge (4.5 tons per day) from the centrifuge will be collected through
jute bags/ Hessian bags and will be sent to composting yard for processing to compost in
consultation with the Municipal authorities. The Topo Plan, Digital Satellite Imaginary of the project site, Surrounding of the project
site, STP layout and P&I diagram for the Dindigul STP are shown in Figures 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and
2.5 respectively.
