IntroductionA rivet is a short cylindrical bar with a
head integral to it. The cylindrical portion ofthe rivet is called shank or od! and lowerportion of shank is known as tai"# as shown inFig.
The rivets are used to make permanentfastening between the plates such as instructural work, ship building, bridges, tanksand boiler shells. The riveted oints are widely
used for oining light metals.
The fastenings !i.e. oints" may be classi#edinto the following two groups $
%. &ermanent fastenings, and $% Temporary or detachable fastenings
The &er'anent (astenin)s are thosefastenings which cannot be disassembledwithout destroying the connectingcomponents. The e'amples of permanentfastenings in order of strength are soldered, bra(ed, welded and riveted oints.
The te'&orar! or detacha"(astenin)s are those fastenings whiccan be disassembled without destroyinthe connecting components. The'amples of temporary fastenings arscrewed, keys, cotters, pins and spline

*ethods o( Rivetin)
The function of rivets in a oint is to makea connection that has strength and tightness.
The strength is necessary to prevent failure ofthe oint. The tightness is necessary in orderto contribute to strength and to preventleakage as in a boiler or in a ship hull.
*ateria" o( Rivets The material of the rivets must be tough
and ductile. They are usually made of steel!low carbon steel or nickel steel", brass, aluminium or copper, but when strength and a)uid tight oint is the main consideration, thenthe steel rivets are used.
T!&es o( Riveted Joints%. *ap oint, and
+. utt oint.
La& JointA lap oint is that in which one plate
overlaps the other and the two plates are thenriveted together
The rivets are used to makepermanent fastening between theplates such as in structural work,
ship building, bridges, tanks andboiler shells.

,utt Joint
butt oint is that in which the main plates arekept in alignment butting !i.e. touching" eachother and a cover plate !i.e. strap" is placedeither on one side or on both sides of the main
plates
%. ingle strap butt oint, and$% ouble strap butt oint.
/n addition to the above, following are thetypes of riveted oints depending upon thenumber of rows of the rivets.
%. ingle riveted oint,$% ouble riveted oint.
