AN INTEGRAL OPEN INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM

• “No matter who you are, most of the smartest people work for someone else” is known as Joy’s Law in the high-tech industry. Attributed to Sun Microsystems cofounder Bill Joy, this “law” emphasizes the essential knowledge problem that faces many enterprises today, that is, that in any given sphere of activity most of the pertinent knowledge will reside outside the boundaries of any one organization, and the central challenge for those charged with the innovation mission is to find ways to access that knowledge. The causal explanation of Joy’s Law is provided in the seminal work of economists Friedrich Hayek and Eric von Hippel on the distributed and sticky nature of knowledge and innovation.

• Hayek, in 1945, arguing for the importance of the market economy, emphasized that at the macro level knowledge is unevenly distributed in society, and that centralized models for economic planning and coordination are prone to failure due to an inability to aggregate this distributed knowledge.

• Thirty years later, micro-level studies by von Hippel began to suggest that in many industries users were the originators of most novel innovations. Users’ dominant role in originating innovations reflects the fact that knowledge is not only distributed but also “sticky,” that is, relatively difficult and extremely costly to move between locations, thus shifting the locus of innovation to where it is the stickiest.

CONTEXT 1 • We are living in a world that is becoming more complex and where change is rapid. • In this world, our basic assumptions are likely to change. An action, a process, a culture which

could have been successful in the past can become inadequate before it can adapt. It is therefore a question of survival to think, explore and anticipate alternative long term futures.

• On the other hand, in a world which is complex and fast-changing, a limited action can have a

big impact, the well-known butterfly effect. • There is good news and bad news. Good news because we are all empowered to participate in

a better future for the world and the next generation. The bad news is that we are also empowered to cause major damage to our planet.

• Complexity has shown the ability to produce emergence of new concepts, new paths, new

opportunities. We will live in a world more and more unknown where “differently” will be at the same time our wealth and our challenge.

CONTEXT 2• In this context, if you do not think about the long-term future, you are not able to make

wise decisions in the short term. Obvious, down-to-earth and pragmatic decisions may result in big mistakes because the world has changed or will change in an unanticipated way.

• This is a challenge, which is already present, and is becoming more relevant for

individuals, companies, states, and the planet as a whole. That is why our way of planning and creating strategy must fundamentally change. We do not have to build our vision only as an extrapolation of the present. We can build our vision from a deep understanding and awareness of alternative scenarios for, and possible discontinuities in, the future.

• The research program for exploring long-term futures is being designed as a unique place

in the world, where an interdisciplinary, international and cross-organisational team interacts on a continuing, networked basis to explore a diversity of possible scenarios for the long-term future and their likely implications for local strategy on the short term.

2. Modelling Alternative Future Scenarios• It is possible today to model thousands of

different futures, based on variations in a set of assumptions. Using existing “exploratory modelling” tools, we can provide instant visualisation of the different possibilities in a rich, multidimensional space.

• Such visualisation is extraordinary helpful in becoming aware of critical factors affecting those futures.

MODALITIES • The project is a joint venture of different research organizations which participate in the project,

bringing their unique and specific analytic tools and skills. Each participant is expected to bring financial and research resources.

• The Research Program is open to research centres on the basis of mutual agreements.

• Research candidates to the network and the venture should present an application illustrating their motivations, background, and financial and research resources.

• The Research program is supported by sponsor memberships. All sponsors are provided with the

basic package: a yearly research report, access to the Research program's Internet website, and a week-long seminar every year.

• Three levels of access through different kinds of memberships are proposed, allowing additional

CONFERENCE• Conferences are usually composed of various presentations. • They tend to be short and concise, with a time span of about 10 to 30 minutes; presentations

are usually followed by a discussion. • The work may be bundled in written form as academic papers and published as the

conference proceedings. • Usually a conference will include keynote speakers. The keynote lecture is often longer,

lasting sometimes up to an hour and a half, particularly if there are several keynote speakers on a panel.

• In addition to presentations, conferences also feature panel discussions, round tables on various issues and workshops.

• Prospective presenters are asked to submit a short abstract of their presentation, which will be reviewed before the presentation is accepted for the meeting.

• We require presenters to submit a paper of about 6–15 pages, which is peer reviewed by members of the program committee or referees chosen by them.

• It is common for presenters to read from a prepared script. Presenters usually base their talk around a visual presentation that displays key figures and research results.

The future at stake Alexandre Rojey, TUCK Foundation

Humanity has to deal with major challenges: rarefaction of resources, global warming, and economic crisis. The present organization of the world economic system appears as non sustainable. Environment degradation, loss of biodiversity, local pollution, rarefaction of natural resources and global warming lead to a major risk of collapse at a global level, if appropriate decisions are not taken in due time. The present economic and financial system, which is based upon short term profit criteria, makes difficult to follow the required orientations and contributes to increase social tensions. A global transition is required, involving major changes in economy and the social life. Disruptive changes are needed, in order to provide appropriate solutions to the present economic, social and environmental challenges.The main options for trying to overcome these challenges are presented and discussed. A first option is based upon the idea that technological progress will be able to solve the problems which are encountered by the human society. For those who support this view, Nanotechnologies, Biotechnologies together with Information and Cognition technologies (NBIC) converge towards a new paradigm, which will enable humanity to overcome the main problems it encounters.

A quite different position is held that those who fear that technology could lead to an irreversible destruction of our environment. Their priority is to reduce our needs and our consumption level. The degrowth movement recommends to limit the consumption of energy and raw materials, while raising the efforts to protect the environment.

The progression towards an increasing complexity is needed, as it is a prerequisite for finding the appropriate solutions which can make the present evolution viable. It will continue, due to a continuous increase of knowledge and the permanent creation of new devices. Society will evolve through the formation of new connections with surrounding devices and new links between people, which can help to create a better understanding and to develop a collective intelligence. The role of creativity will increase in all areas and will help to achieve personal fulfilment. Thus, it will contribute to drive society towards a more open and collaborative organization, not only based upon the search of profit. It can contribute also to bring more democracy and more empathy between citizens from different nations.

Such an evolution can remain compatible with the environment preservation, if it does not imply a similar progression of the GDP and of the consumption of natural resources. In order to achieve an evolution operating in symbiotic relationship with the environment, an appropriate policy must be defined and implemented, as it is not possible to rely only upon the market mechanism. Such a policy implies to reduce the consumption of non renewable resources and to get as close as possible to a “zero waste” situation, by reducing the consumption of non renewable raw materials, recycling used materials whenever possible, achieving an integration of energy and mass fluxes and optimizing the use of bio-resources.

Manifesto on the spirit of planetary consciousness and global emergency

Ervin Laszlo, Club of Budapest.In the closing years of the 20th century we have reached a crucial juncture in our history. We are on the threshold of a new stage of social, spiritual and cultural evolution, a stage that is as different from the stage of the earlier decades of this century as the grasslands were from the caves, and settled villages from life in nomadic tribes. We are evolving out of the nationally based industrial societies that were created at the dawn of the first industrial revolution, and heading toward an interconnected, information-based social, economic and cultural system that straddles the globe. The path of this evolution is not smooth: it is filled with shocks and surprises. This century has witnessed several major shock-waves, and others may come our way before long. The way we shall cope with present and future shocks will decide our future, and the future of our children and grandchildren.The challenge we now face is the challenge of shaping our destiny. Our generation, of all the thousands of generations before us, is called upon to decide the fate of all life on this planet.The processes we have initiated within our lifetime and the lifetime of our parents and grandparents cannot continue in the lifetime of our children and grandchildren. Whatever we do either creates the framework for reaching a peaceful and cooperative global society and thus continuing the grand adventure of life, spirit and consciousness on Earth, or sets the stage for the termination of humanity's tenure on this planet. If we maintain obsolete values and beliefs, a fragmented consciousness and a self-centered spirit, we will also maintain outdated goals and behaviors. Such behaviors by a large number of people would block the entire process of evolution toward a peaceful and cooperative global society.There is now both a moral and a practical obligation for each of us to look beyond the surface of events, beyond the polemics of day-to-day politics, the sensationalistic headlines of the mass media, and the fads and fashions of changing lifestyles and styles of work; an obligation to feel the groundswell underneath the events and perceive the direction they are taking. We have a fundamental obligation to evolve the spirit and the consciousness that could enable us to perceive the true nature of our problems and our opportunities - and to begin acting on them. Today's economic, social and technological environment is our own creation, and only the creativity of our mind - our culture, spirit and consciousness - can enable us to cope with it. Beyond the powers of rational mind, the remarkable faculties of human spirit embrace the power of love, of compassion, and of solidarity.

Third millennium planet awareness and horizons of futures

Michel Saloff Coste, Human beings are distinct from animals by their capacity to self-reflect. They try to draw lessons from the past, ask meaningful questions about the present, and then attempt to invent the future. Contemplating the future, exploring it, shedding light on it is an ancient quest. The uncertain nature of multiple variables and the indiscernible character of evolutionary laws and their effect on these variables make the future profoundly unpredictable. The capacity to anticipate is the key to success. There is a deep correlation between the capacity to think of time and space on an enormous scale and the actual fulfillment of an ambitious destiny. People who succeed in transforming their environment are those capable of embracing interests that cover a vast space, those who can propel themselves into the distant future.To be human is to pose three essential issues: the ontological themes of Goodness, Beauty and Truth. These three questions bring us into the past, but also redirect us toward the future. Utopia, in the pure sense of “utopos” (“that which has no place”) is at the heart of humans’ questioning. Tell me what is your utopia, and I will tell you who you are. Perhaps the most interesting dimension of utopia is its alterity or “otherness.” Utopia in its most revolutionary role introduces that which is different. It is the space in which the Other can crystallize. Each person, in inventing his or her future, invents a personal field of reality and thereby builds an individual universe. Humans have been seen traditionally as products of the universe, modernism has sanctioned their understanding of this universe. We are now invited to invent the universe. There are numerous ways and diverse approaches to invent one’s future. In this presentation, I will make a brief overview of my research in this field, the steps in the evolution of mankind, future horizons, and how we could build a new civilization.

Michel Saloff Coste, In principo We are in a period of deep change, but paradoxically, at the same time, we seem to have forgotten all our capacity for in-depth understanding of the social and business revolution we are undergoing. In the face of rapid modifications, we often have a tendency to focus on the short-term and thereby get ourselves stuck in the quicksand of fashions.

While many roads of thought are opened by people trying to retain a detached attitude regarding the dimension of ever more tumultuous phenomena, two ways of reading the situation intersect. There is the deeper, global one involving the evolution of societies and human activities. Then there is the one entailing evolution of businesses, which gives the appearance of being more concrete in a world that has become essentially commercial.

At a time when companies are collapsing while others are witnessing performances never seen throughout the entire industrial era, will we not have to reverse the reflexes that we have built up over hundreds of years? If so, we might then find it easier to understand the immense capabilities offered by the new post-industrial information era, the "creation-communication" era where the role of the individual once again becomes centerpiece. We will have to explore new cultural, managerial and systemic paths, while simultaneously keeping in mind that the three periods preceding us (hunting and gathering, planting and rearing, and industry and trade) continue to impregnate our cultures and our types of organization.

It is in relation to this new illumination – that of the end of an age – that we must find a fresh example of the company. Companies can no longer take pride in themselves for fitting into a fully controllable, or much less foreseeable, future. Nevertheless, no matter how unforeseeable the future is, it will partly be the result of what people, individually or working in teams of various types, will imagine and want to create.

What sustainable energy strategy for the planet?Alexandre Rojey, TUCK Foundation

Fossil Energy sources provide presently more than 80% of the world energy demand. The decline of fossil energy sources and global warming represent major threats for the present century. Our energy model has to be reconsidered and we need to undertake without any further delay the transition towards a more sustainable system.The energy transition will require time and will be difficult to achieve. For the time being, there is no immediate alternative which might cover most of our needs. The energy transition involves a whole set of innovative solutions: more energy efficient technologies, alternative energy sources, new energy vectors, hybrid propulsion systems, CO2 capture and storage. Major transformations in our economy and our way of life are needed.The presentation describes these different options and proposes a roadmap for achieving a successful transition, avoiding any breakdown for our economy or ecological disaster.It points out, beyond the description of the different solutions we have to put in place, the urgency of setting up a new deal for our society, within a sustainable development perspective..

This presentation is based upon a book written by the author, entitled « Energy and Climate- How to achieve a successful energy transition »’, published by Wiley in 2009.

Superefficient domestic appliances as a key lever to climate protection

Peter Boehm, Bosch and Siemens Home Appliances GroupA life-cycle analysis of home appliances clearly shows that 90% of the environmental and climate impact takes place during the long use-phase of each unit. Fortunately, as a result of the significant and innovative technological leaps made in the reduction of electricity and water consumption, there is enormous resource-savings potential from the replacement of old appliances in private households. For instance, the most efficient new refrigerators use as much as 75% less energy than those 15 years ago. Thus, through the early decommissioning of such obsolete appliances, it is not only possible to dramatically lower energy bills, but also make a major contribution to climate protection. The overall savings potential in Europe is estimated to be 45 billion kWh or the equivalent of 20 million tons of CO2 – per annum!

Within the context of the accelerated phase-out of nuclear energy –in the future quite likely not only in Germany – steps to increasing energy efficiency will be of utmost import. More electricity production via fossil fuels would be counter-productive for the climate. Renewable resources may eventually close the gap, but this will take time. Energy efficient technologies such as those already on the available in today’s most modern appliances are, therefore, key to bridging this gap. Moreover, the fact remains that “the best electricity is that which is never used”..

Alain Gauthier Alain Gauthier is an international consultant, facilitator, coach, and educator who focuses his work on developing co-leadership and partnering capabilities in and across the public, private and civil society sectors. He is passionate about integrating the inner and outer dimensions of human experience, both at the individual and collective levels.

A graduate from H.E.C. Ervin Laszlo Ervin Laszlo spent his childhood in Budapest. His life was darkened during the Nazi occupation and the siege of Budapest by the Soviets in World War II. He was a celebrated child prodigy on the piano and made his public debut at the age of nine. Winning the grand prize at the international music competition in Geneva enabled him to cross the Iron Curtain and begin an international concert career, first in Europe and then in the United States and South America.After shifting to the life of a scientist and intellectual, Laszlo conducted studies and wrote papers for the Club of Rome, of which he was a member. In the late 1970s and early ’80s, he oversaw global projects at the request of the secretary-general of the United Nations. He received his doctorate from the Sorbonne and has held positions at Princeton, Yale, the University of Houston, the State University of New York, and elsewhere. His studies and insights in the 1990s led him to the discovery of the Akashic field, which he has continued to explore ever since.The author, co-author, or editor of 86 books that have been translated into 23 languages, Laszlo has also written several hundred papers and articles in scientific journals and popular magazines. André Jean Marc Loechel After a first job done at the Strasbourg University under the supervision of the Dean Georges Livet and after an introduction from Maurice Druon, Andre Jean Marc Loechel is a student at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes. He then actively participates at André Chastel's seminar at the Collége de France. Teacher at the Grenoble II University (1991-1993), he defends his thesis on „the myth of Venice“ in 1992, notably under the direction of Gian-Domenico Romanelli, Director of the museums of Venedice. He sketches a picture of a city at the dawn of the Renaissance, at a point of time where the new technologies of the 20th century saw the circulation of images and written work speed up, on a territory where the putting into images reflects the context of rapid globalisation that existed five centuries ago, as well as a profound articulation between the process of technological innovation and the necessary management of cultural identity (work published by the Italian Encyclopaedia).

Organizer of the first seminar dedicated to the art sites on the Web and on the virtual reconstructions of cultural inheritance at the institute for humanities, Sciences and Arts of Venice in 1993, he organises the European Forum on new images (Strasbourg, 3rd to 6th April 1995). Dedicating himself to a European numerisation program of the cultural heritage, he is a joint responsible of the European project MOSAIC of network of virtual museums (1996-1998 / program TEN-TELECOM). Joint director of the „Access to European cultural inheritance and education line of action of the European Commission - MEDICI initiative - (1998 - 2001), he is also scientific referent of the European project WEEST (City of sciences of Naples).

Alexandre Rojey has been working for many years at IFP, a large R&D organization in France, where he has been Director for Sustainable Development, coordinating activities related to global climate change, long term energy supply and environment protection.

Previously he was in charge of natural gas activities and has initiated new developments in the area of natural gas processing. He has been also chairman of CEDIGAZ, an international association in the area of natural gas and chairman of the ECRIN Club "Alternative energies" for the promotion of links between research and industry. He has written a book entitled « Energy and climate- How to achieve a successful energy transition » published by Wiley.

He is presently active within the Tuck Foundation, which is dealing in the area of Energy and Sustainable Development, where he is leading a think tank entitled IDEES. Based upon the work done within this think tank, he has written a new book entitled « The future at stake», published 2010.

Michel Saloff CosteMichel Saloff-Coste's research focuses on the paradigm shift within the information society that he himself defines as a “Creation-Communication Society”. Michel Saloff Coste is recognized in Europe America and Asia as being a vanguard artist, integral and global futurist, business advisors and entrepreneurs. As keynote speaker he have spoke this last twenty years in front of more than 10 000 managers of the most important company in the world. He is a change catalyst working with individuals, corporations and government to create “fast insights into alternative futures”. Michel Saloff-Coste, consultant in management strategy and communication, got involved in more fundamental research on these topics as he directed a multidisciplinary workshop on societal change, from 1985 to 1987, at the Ministry of Research in France. In 1991, he joined as Senior consultant and research director the Bossard Consulting Group, a top leading European consultancy firm, which is now Capgemini. In 1993 he created his own research and consultancy firm MSC ET ASSOCIES Management Strategy Communication specialising in global governance, sustainable development and information society. Between 1997 and 2005 Michel launched and developed a venture capital firm, Newcap Invest. In 1993, he is initiator and founder of the Club of Budapest in France : an international non-profit organisation dedicated to encouraging people to discuss complex global issues. Michel Saloff-Coste has taught vanguard management in HEC Paris since 1990. As a contemporary artist Michel has explored a wide variety of mediums: painting, photography, video and music. His work has been exhibited and collected by many private galleries and individuals but also leading art institutions such as the Museun of Modern Art in Paris, Centre George Pompidou. Gyorgyi Szabo Gyorgyi Szabo serves as Ervin Laszlo’s Executive Assistant. She is a co-creator and core team member of the WorldShift International Foundation, the WorldShift Movement and the WorldShift 2012 organizations.

In 2006-2007 she acted as the ‘International Relations Associate’ for the Club of Budapest Foundation in Hungary. In 2010 she translated from Italian ‘The Basic Code of the Universe: The Science of the Invisible of Physics, Medicine and Spirituality by Dr Massimo Citro. She is a trained Reiki and Reconnective practitioner.

Gyorgyi holds a Master’s degree from Trinity St David, University of Wales, a Bachelor’s degree from Birkbeck College, University of London, and is presently working on her dissertation for a Ph.D. at the Sorbonne, the University of Paris. She lived many years in the U.S., the U.K., and Italy and acquired a wide range of managerial and organizational skills. Her holistic approach, interest in metaphysics, and attention to conscious self-evolution serves as a foundation of her aspiration to help facilitate humanity’s evolution toward a sustainable future. Mary Ann Thompson-Frenk Mary Ann is an award winning artist, public speaker, philanthropist and activist who has also led The Memnosyne Foundation, in its successful

efforts to negotiate the first treaty and plan of action between the Traditional Leadership of the Navajo and Hopi Nations. Together with her husband, Joshua Frenk, she has sponsored various human rights, arts and environmental programs both individually and via The Memnosyne Foundation which provided grants to three Nobel Peace Prize Laureates: Betty Williams, Rigoberta Menchu, and Jody Williams, as well as supporting the CRRR Interfaith Caravan in Mauritania that is fighting bigotry against those with HIV/AIDS and terrorism through education and service. Other endeavors include sponsoring and overseeing the collaboration for The 2010 International Summit on Indigenous Environmental Philosophy which produced the Redstone Statement from input from 40+ indigenous environmentalists from around the world.

Mary Ann has led the Memnosyne Foundation to move its interfaith programs from the traditional lecture series styled program into a community service oriented one that engages individuals past religious, racial and economic divides by collaboratively designing the Memnosyne Interfaith Service Network that has since grown to 3,000 people in just two years and is now entering its 3 rd year thanks to the leadership of the Memnosyne staff and larger volunteer community in the midst of one of the most demographically divided times of the state of Texas. A similar program was launched in Kyoto in collaboration with the Shinto community of Oomoto in June of 2011. Most recently in 2011 the organization was praised by the Dallas Morning News for launching GreenSourceDFW.org in order to provide the first online community link between both for-profit corporations and non-profit environmental organizations, as well as for the innovative individuals with solutions to share. Other work includes establishing 3 clinics and a school/cultural center in the Yucatan for the Mayan people, as well as other work in Mexico, Rwanda, Tanzania, Vietnam, Malaysia, Mauritania, Guatemala, and with several Native American communities including the Hopi, Navajo, Ute, Blackfoot, Maya, Toltec, Tesuque Pueblo, as well as the Dallas Inter-Urban Tribal Center. Work has also been done with the Liberian Truth and Reconciliation Commission that helped to bring the most survivors forward to testify from the New York area than had been willing to come forward before. She will also serve in 2011 as a United Nations Panelsit for the Nexus Youth Global Summit addressing the role spirituality plays in philanthropiy.

The stated goal of The Memnosyne Foundation, “to provide mankind with the means to encourage positive, peaceful, global collaboration in all areas of knowledge” is being achieved via their ongoing global programs and via the creation of both virtual and physical “Campuses for Humanity”, inspired by ancient Xochicalco, where there will be Centers dedicated to 7 areas of knowledge. Each center aimed towards encouraging people to become “Conscious Cultural Creators” embracing the responsibility for how their actions are forming the current and future culture of humanity.

Club of Budapest Founded in 1993, the global Club of Budapest is an informal international association dedicated to developing a new way of thinking and a new ethics that will help resolve the social, political, economic, and ecological challenges of the 21st century.With its roster of internationally renowned members the Club initiates a dialogue between different belief systems and world views in order to co-create and develop effective strategies for responsible and sustainable action with a global focus.The idea of the Club of Budapest was developed in 1978 in a discussion between Aurelio Peccei, founder and first president of the Club of Rome, and Ervin Laszlo, systems philosopher and also member of the Club of Rome at that time. They were convinced that the enormous challenges to humanity can only be dealt with through the development of a cultural and cosmopolitan consciousness. Based on these ideas, the Club of Budapest was founded by Dr. Laszlo in 1993. The founding city and namesake of the Club lies at the heart of Europe and is spread out over both banks of the River Danube. The successful merging of the two cities Buda and Pest is symbolized by the famous Chain Bridge. It visualizes our ambition to build bridges between generations, disciplines and cultures. About Integral University in Paris by Michel Nguyen The

So far, the Integral University ("Université Intégrale" in French) in Paris refers to a cycle of conferences organized by the French chapter of the Club of Budapest based on an idea put forward by Michel Saloff-Coste. It is not an institute as such, as it is still in its developing stages. The idea is to organize one-day seminars on various themes in cooperation with speakers, theoreticians as well as practitioners. The use of the word integral puts the emphasis not on the integral movement, but on a common desire of being integral. With this aim in view, the systemic and transdisciplinary approaches are also considered as part of the same quest for integrality. Over the past two years there have been height seminars; they dealt with the following themes: 1) what the integral approach is; 2) how to integrate it into our lives and actions; 3) education; 4) the social, economic and ecological crisis; 5) sustainable development; 6) civilizations from the future and the future of civilizations; 7) eco-life, eco-cities and eco-villages; 8) Asian and Western Civilizations. The seminars consist of presentations followed by questions, mini-workshops, exercises and musical interludes. Planetary Futures We emphasize the notion of Planetary Futures in the light of the increasing challenges that we face in relation to environmental, psycho-social and politico-economic domains across the planet. From a number of philosophical and theoretical perspectives it is being suggested that we are now in a Planetary Era (see Edgar Morin: Homeland Earth, 1999).Ecologists are calling for a planet-wide response to global warming and rapid climate change; evolution of consciousness theorists refer to the emergence of planetary consciousness (see Jennifer Gidley, 2008); leading-edge political scientists point to the rise of a global imaginary (see Manfred Steger, 2008); and innovative educational researchers stress the need to globalise the research imagination (see Jane Kenway and Joannah Fahey, 2008).It is vital that futures pedagogy is informed of these emerging perspectives and incorporate them into their projects and programs. We particularly welcome contributions from futures researchers, practitioners and educators who think and work beyond nationalistic boundaries and take a planetary approach to futures pedagogy.
