The Challenge
Prior to 7 Medical, Desert West had a tedious, inefficient workflow for getting the structured
ultrasound (US) report back into its EMR. During the exam, the technologist created the structured
DICOM report on the modality and sent the study and report to the PACS. Then, another employee
would perform the following manual process:
1. Log in to the PACS
2. Retrieve the structured report (single or multiple pages)
3. Stitch multiple pages into one report
4. Print the ultrasound report to PDF and save on the local computer
5. Log in to the EMR
6. Import the PDF report to the patient record (save to folder in patient record)
With average imaging volumes of 80 studies daily, this workflow could take up to 15 minutes per
study, resulting in a workload of 1-2 full time equivalents (FTEs) per month. If a report required an
addendum, the tedious process had to be repeated, adding additional time.
The Solution
7 Medical enabled DWO to automate the process of getting the structured report back into its EMR.
1. DICOM structured reports are electronically routed from the modality to 7 Medical’s X-Connect™ integration
module.
2. X-Connect converts the DICOM structured reports to HL7 report messages and routes the HL7 report
messages to the EMR.
3. Based on X-Connect’s transformation, the HL7 report messages are converted to the desired format (PDF, TIFF,
html or other format) and attached to the patient record in the EMR.
Desert West implemented 7 Medical’s Xi-Imaging™ (PACS) solution with X-Connect integration. As a
result, they were able electronically route the ultrasound report to the patient record in the EMR.
“With this workflow automation and integration, sending the report from the modality to the EMR was
cut from 15 minutes to less than a minute,” said Brad Fox, EHR Systems Manager at Desert West. “It’s
great because patient cycle times are so much shorter. Physicians can see patients and get their
diagnostic reports and access to images right away.”

Value-added Benefits
Manual entry and reentry of patient and order information in EMR and modalities.
DICOM Modality Worklist (DMWL) integration electronically sends patient and order information from the EMR, eliminating multiple entry points and reducing errors.
End of life system problematic due to system failures and reaching storage capacity limits.
Xi-Imaging delivers latest technology with unlimited cloud-based storage. 7 Medical migrated all prior studies to the Xi-Imaging (PACS) platform—all studies in one image repository.
Poor image quality with legacy PACS viewer.
Xi-View Pro provides latest thin-client streaming technology supporting advanced visualization at highest resolutions for better diagnostic results.
No backup or disaster recovery in place.
On-demand, cloud-based solution includes built in backup and disaster recovery protection from SSAE 16 and HIPAA compliant data center.
On-premise PACS was not optimized for remote access.
Cloud solution is accessible anytime, anywhere via browser and Internet connection.

How It Works
Cloud-based Solution
Desert West OB/GYN operates four locations in Arizona,
including its main office in Glendale, Phoenix, Peoria and
Anthem. The clinic implemented 7 Medical’s cloud-based
Xi-Imaging™ PACS solution with X-Connect™ integration
to achieve an image-enabled EMR.
Desert West’s Phoenix, Peoria and Anthem locations are
connected to the main Glendale location via a local area
network (LAN). Glendale is connected to 7 Medical’s data
center via a virtual private network (VPN) tunnel.
Storage, Disaster Recovery & Redundancy
Imaging studies are stored in 7 Medical’s primary data
center and backed up to a secondary data center,
providing redundancy and disaster recovery protection.
The data centers are equipped with state-of-the-art
cooling, backup power generators, and redundant
Internet connectivity. In the event of an outage,
emergency or natural disaster, Desert West’s data is
protected and can be easily restored.
