December 3, 2017 1st Sunday of Advent
Mass Intentions
My Dear Family of
Faith:
I turned on the
radio the other day and
heard Christmas music,
as if the most solemn
Feast Day of Christmas
had already hap-
pened. Now, this cultur-
al battle is nothing new, but it does present a possi-
ble danger for us Catholics that we must be vigilant
about. We live in a culture that hypes almost every-
thing, and by the time Christmas actually comes, we
are sick of the songs, decorations, and celebra-
tions. Rather, Christmas Day (December 25) begins
our season of Christmas joy that should last until
January 8 with the Baptism of the Lord, and I would
hope that our manner of life would reflect this reali-
ty.
As you know, this time before Christmas
(four weeks) is Advent, a penitential season, where
the Church's prayers move us to reflect on the Sec-
ond Coming of the Lord. We should not forget, as
one blogger remarked, "Advent is like Lent, but it is
not like Lent. Advent is also rightly described as a
season of joyful expectation. We are preparing also
to celebrate the feast that, perhaps, touches us the
most deeply: the Birth of the Lord. Hence, there is
also a strong Marian dimension to our Advent reflec-
tion. I like to describe Advent as a season of joyful
penance or, if you prefer, penitential joy. We can
hold the two in a beautiful, fruitful tension."
Without a doubt the Holy Sacrifice of the
Mass helps us in our readiness to meet the Lord at
His Second Coming. Recall the doxology at Mass,
when the priest says: "lift up your hearts." And all
respond, "we lift them up to the Lord." This exhorts
us to the truth that behavior at Mass is heavenly
behavior; respectful of what things are like in heaven
– incense makes the setting different; looks and
smells are different – it is not of this world. Liturgy
either is a heavenly experience or it becomes too
casual and is not a heavenly experience. Movement,
vestments and songs should be heavenly – speaking
of heaven.
Our posture at Holy Mass, especially how
we receive Holy Communion communicates this
heavenly dimension. As of late our Bishop has asked
the faithful in the Diocese to examine how they re-
ceive our Blessed Lord in Holy Communion. This is
not a bad thing - in fact, it should be something we
do with regularity so not to become lax in the pres-
ence of the greatest treasure we can receive.
Concretely, the Bishop has invited Catho-
lics to consider receiving our Lord Jesus on the
tongue and kneeling as a means to a greater experi-
ence of reverence. To offer this opportunity, I have
asked, starting this Sunday, that the Extraordinary
Ministers of Holy Communion stand behind the altar
rail when distributing our Lord. Also, I've had cush-
ions made to make kneeling easier.
Some Points:
1) This is meant as an INVITATION to
deeper reverence! This is an invitation to help people
understand that they have an option to kneel, which
will benefit the inward reality of their reverent re-
ception.
2) It's just that - an invitation. Neither the
Bishop or I are making people kneel. If you are
physically unable to kneel, please don't kneel. I don't
want to have to get involved in getting people up.
3) Also, the Church still allows Holy
Communion in the hand as an option. I've seen many
people reverently receive the Lord on the
hand. However, I too have seen many examples of
people who are irreverent when they try to grab
Jesus or when they handle Him in a casual
way. Although Communion in the hand is not a bad
thing, we must remain attentive to avoid posture that
may lead to casual behavior in our treatment of the
Eucharist.
4) This is not meant to be a separation of
the "sheep and the goats." By no means is one "more
Catholic" if they receive on the tongue and kneeling,
or in the hand and standing. Any such thoughts must
be rejected outright as enticements of the Evil One
who wants division. When you come to Holy Com-
munion, your thoughts should be on Jesus, who is
really, truly, substantially present before you, and is
offering Himself to nourish you. We need to stop
worrying about what everyone else is thinking. FO-
CUS ON THE LORD! The entire point of this spir-
itual invitation is for all of us to consider how we are
encountering the Eucharistic Lord.
I encourage every member of IHM to at
least give receiving Jesus on the tongue (and possi-
bly kneeling) a try. Believe me, you will not melt,
and the Earth will not stop. But, here's the thing
friends - and it's a spiritual point - it's about open-
ness to the Lord. The more that we are open to the
Holy Spirit and His workings, the more God's grace
(His life) can really take root in our life. It's really
that simple, and it's really that profound. Outward
gestures and inward dispositions are a two way and
not a one way street of influence. What we do with
our bodies matters.
God bless,

Praying for the Triumph of Good and To Overcome Evil
It has become unfortunately all to common that we hear
of increasing acts of violence and evil that seem to be
taking over our culture. As Catholic believers, we are
aware of the spiritual battle that has always existed be-
tween good and evil, and we recognize Satan as the
source of all evil. But we know that our Lord Jesus Christ
came to overcome evil, and it is our calling as His follow-
ers to do our part in drawing people closer to Him and
away from the evil one.
Beginning this Sunday, our parish will join in a diocesan-
wide effort to offer specific petitions at Holy Mass for the
triumph of good and to overcome evil, along with the
prayer to St. Michael, asking for his intercession and pro-
tection. The prayer can be found on the back cover of the
Breaking Bread missalette. A prayer card is also attached
to this bulletin for you to save and use.
PRAYER TO SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL
St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the
wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him,
we humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly
hosts, by the power of God,
cast into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen..

ma of the Church since 1854. Under the title of the Im-
maculate Conception, Mary is the patroness of the United
States. This is a Holy Day of Obligation in the United

IHM Endowment Fund for Catholic Education
The IHM Endowment Fund was established in May of
1992 to support Catholic religious education in our par-
ish. The fund has been built from donations and memorial
gifts, and the current value of the fund is over $1 million.
The money that is given to the fund is invested, and a por-
tion of the earnings is distributed to benefit Catholic edu-
cation in our school and Religious Education programs.
The fund is managed by the IHM Endowment Board -
parishioners appointed by the pastor, who work with a
professional investment advisor. The fund has distributed
over $160,000 since its inception, helping to fund school
scholarships, faculty and staff retreats, faith-based curric-
ulum materials, sacramental preparation resources, mis-
sion trips and adult faith formation materials. The contin-
ued growth of the endowment fund is important as educa-
tion costs continue to grow.
2017 Gift Matching Challenge!
From now until December 31, 2017, each tax-deductible
gift to the Endowment Fund will be matched with an
equivalent donation up to a total of $10,000. For more
