It is now Kislev. The days growdarker still, but soon the candleswill burn brightly and the
universe, ever so slowly, will turn lighter again.
The rabbis teach us that we should increase thelight and thereby increase our joy. Light isspiritual. The old Union Prayer Book, edited byone of the first rabbis at CKI, Rabbi Emil Hirsh, has a reading before lighting Shabbat candlesthat I grew up with and still have memorized.“Light is the symbol of the Divine. The Lord ismy light and my salvation.” Our siddur, SimShalom, includes this verse that we sing everyShabbatmorning, “Or chadash, al tzion ta’ir.V’nizkeh chulanu m’hera l’oro. Cause a new lightto shine upon Zion.” We are to be a holy people,a light to the nations. And just as the rabbisunderstood, “Or zarua la’tzadik, ul’yishrei levsimcha, Light is sown, planted for the righteousand joy for the upright in heart.”
What we learn from this verse is that first we dothe tzedakah, the righteousness, and then weexperience joy. First we light the candles andincrease the light and then we experience joy.As Rabbi Shefa Gold explains, “Receiving G-d’sLight means becoming enlightened. With thispractice, I call forth a new light, and open tothat radiance.” May it be so.
Chanukahwill be a busy, joyous time at CKI. Ourcelebrations will begin a day early! On Dec. 1,Shabbat afternoon, come find me at Elgin’sWinterfest from 2:00-6:00 PM. We’ll have lots ofdreidels and some music. Plans are still forming, but we are thrilled that the city asked us toparticipate.

The Principles of Covenant: ChanukatHabayit, Dedication of the Home
We know the story of Chanukah, how the littlevial of oil lasted eight days. We know how thelittle band of Maccabees won the war forreligious freedom. We know how to “publicizethe miracle” and light candles for eight nights, each night brighter than the last.
The word Chanukahmeans “dedication.” It isalso related to the word for education, chinuch. Psalm 30 actually talks about it being

a psalm for “chanukat habayit l’David”, a psalmfor the dedication of the Temple (for David).
Both our synagogues and our homes are placesof dedication and education. Our homes are tobe mikdash me’at, little sanctuaries. Oursynagogues are to be houses of study, assembly, prayer.
What then are we at CKI dedicating ourselvesto? To our vision statement: of meaningfulobservance, lifelong learning (chinuch),building community and embracing diversity.
What else do we dedicate ourselves to? I likethe Peter, Paul and Mary song, “Light OneCandle,” that asks:“What is the memory that's valued so highlyThat we keep it alive in that flame? What's the commitment to those who have diedThat we cry out they've not died in vain?We have come this far always believingThat justice would somehow prevailThis is the burden, this is the promiseThis is why we will not fail!”
However, it can’t just be about keeping thememory alive in that flame. That is only onecomponent. We also must derive meaning fromthis ancient tradition for ourselves, and for ourchildren and grandchildren today.
“Meaning” is tricky. What is meaningful to memay not be to you. My confirmation studentsrecently wrestled with this term. One of theonline dictionaries defined meaningful as that

with meaning. Not much help. But as wecontinued to wrestle with the word (Israel, afterall, means G-dwrestler), we discovered thatsomething that is meaningful is something wecare about deeply, passionately.
Dedicate yourself to finding that passion, thatmeaning in Judaism. Is it Saturday morningservices? Great. Come join us. Is it makingShabbat dinner on a cold, winter’s night? I sawsome great pictures of a younger member’shomemade challah recently. Is it learningHebrew? Is it wrestling with text? Is it lightingthe Chanukah candles and increasing your joy?

Throughout the past 100 years, theHadassah Medical Organization'sDepartment oof Opthalmology hasprioritized a platform that encouragesand nurtures the development of newinsights into eye diseases and thecreation of new therapies, says Prof.Itay Chowers, the department’s newdirector.
As Prof. Chowers explains, Hadassah’sOphthalmology Department, a National Centerfor Diagnosis of Eye Diseases, is set up to makea global contribution to the specialty. It is, forexample, a leader in genetic diagnostics, particularly in the field of such retinal diseasesas retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-relatedmacular degeneration (AMD), Prof. Chower’sarea of expertise.
“AMD, the most common cause of blindness inthe developed world, has a strong geneticcomponent,” Prof. Chowers notes. His particularinterest is investigating how this geneticcomponent contributes to the disease’sdevelopment and progression. Using genetics,Prof. Chowers explains, “we can understand theunderlying causes of the disease and, in thefuture, hopefully personalize the therapy, aswell as diagnose the disease sooner.”
Hadassah’s ophthalmologists are involved incutting-edge clinicals trials with somepromising treatments for AMD. One example isthe treatment of the wet form of AMD, whichinvolves the growth of abnormal blood vessels.Researchers are participating in clinical trialswith new pharmaceutical agents that aim toachieve a more prolonged effect so that fewerinjections will be necessary. They are alsolooking into new drugs that can prove effectivefor patients who have not responded to AMDmedicines in use today.
While, of course, patients wish they could avoidinjections, Prof. Chowers explains that eyedrops to treat AMD are unable to penetrate theeye well enough for sufficient efficacy. There is,however, a project in progress at Hadassah to
develop a special type of syringe toreduce discomfort and the risk ofcomplications, as well as to design apersonalized treatment interval forthe patient.
Research into dry AMD is nowfocusing on the immune system.Hadassah is involved in two clinicaltrials with new compounds that
seek to block the specific part of the immunesystem that is thought to cause progression ofAMD.
Hadassah is also one of a few centers in theworld that is conducting a clinical trial withstem cells that can replace the epithelial layerof the retina which degenerates in AMD.Hadassah’s researchers are using stem cells thatwere developed at Hadassah by Profs. EyalBanin and Benjamin Reubinoff.
Both this innovative research and Hadassah’sstate-of-the-art surgery are being conducted inan area of the hospital called “the RoundBuilding,” which was built in the 1960s. Arenovation of this building has recently beenlaunched.
“We will be able to upgrade our services topatients through the planned renovation,” Prof.Chowers says. “We can build something thatwill sustain us for many years going forward.”As he comments, “It is difficult to performhigh-tech surgeries in outdated operatingrooms.” In the expanded renovated space,Hadassah’s surgeons will be able to performmore procedures, especially those that requireroom for the latest imaging equipment, whichis essential for sophisticated ophthalmicsurgery. In addition, Prof. Chowers relates, thenew facilities will enable them to move aheadmore quickly with their research.
Also under exploration at Hadassah is UsherSyndrome, a condition that is characterized byRP and hearing loss. It can be caused by any of11 gene mutations. Dr. Dror Sharon, head of theGenetics Laboratory in the Department ofOphthalmology, and his team are studying thegenetic mutations that can result in thiscombination of hearing loss and visualimpairment.
Hadassah Ophthalmology Department: An Environment That Encourages Insight
Questions about Hadassah? Interested inmaking a donation to Hadassah? Please contact Debbie Sternfeld at
[email protected] or 847-985-1122.
RP, itself, is caused by a single mutation in onegene. There are, however, about 200 differentgene mutations that can cause the disease. TheFDA recently approved a gene therapy to treata form of RP caused by one of the mutations.Hadassah is currently collaborating withcolleagues in Paris and other medical centersaround the world to develop treatment fordifferent types of RP.
In the subspecialty of pediatric ophthalmology, one of the more serious eye diseases beingtreated at Hadassah is retinopathy ofprematurity. Often this disease results fromoxygen incubation of premature babies, because the concentrated oxygen triggersabnormal growth of blood vessels in the eye.The condition is treated successfully with thesame injections used for AMD, as well as withlasers. Prof.Chowers reports that Hadassah is“helping our neighbors” in the PalestinianAuthority eradicate this disease among thePalestinians.
Hadassah has been assisting developingcountries in upgrading their ophthalmologyexpertise for 60 years, and the efforts are stillongoing. African, South American, EasternEuropean, and Palestinian physicians come totrain at Hadassah and bring the latestophthalmological techniques back home. “Weare very proud of the physicians who havetrained in Israel and are now helping their ownpeople with what they have learned,”comments Prof. Chowers. “In this sense, wemultiply the effect of Hadassah, and this is asource of pride for us all.”
